Thinking Michigan State vs Oregon vII. MSU really doesn't deserve to be there, as they've been less than impressive all season except for a miracle against Michigan and a win over an overrated OSU.

You'd have a tough time convincing me OSU is overrated after they went into the Big House and whipped JH's Michigan team 42-13.

Is there any rating that puts Iowa ahead of Ohio State?
Sagarin:
Ohio State 4
Iowa 13
(Stanford 5)
Massey:
Ohio State 4
Iowa 8
(Stanford)
Others I know about are not yet updated...

I think the Rose Bowl has said they'd take the higher ranked team. That should be tOSU due to their tougher schedule and better signature win. Please let it be tOSU. There's no upside to playing Iowa (much like there was little upside to playing Wisconsin 3 years ago). This team deserves a marquis game against a marquis name. That's tOSU. That's NOT Iowa.

I do think the Rose Bowl will want Ohio State over Iowa, but let's not compare this Iowa team ti that Wisconsin team. That Wisconsin team was what, 8-4? It wasn't a great team by any means. This Iowa team is very good, and everyone knows it. Stanford will get plenty of props if it were to beat Iowa on New Year's Day, but the narrative would be, Stanford beats Iowa. Would also provide a nice bookend to the season; "Stanford beats Iowa team that trounced the Northwestern team Stanford fell to in the first game of the season."
If Stanford were to beat Ohio State, the narrative will be "Shaw beats Meyer" and for the national media - and Shaw's agent - that would be a pretty freaking big deal.

I'd rather play Iowa because I just want the W and they're (probably) the worse team.
It's hard to know what the committee will do. Iowa's got an additional win, and played MSU closer than OSU (-3 on a neutral field is not the same as -3 at home). From the sound of it they played their heart out. Given the way polls normally work, you'd expect the rankings to look like:
1) Clemson
2) Alabama
3) Oklahoma/MSU
4) MSU/Oklahoma (hard to tell placement here)
5) OSU
6) Stanford
7) Iowa
But the committee is a different beast. I really don't know what will happen, wouldn't be surprised if we're ranked anywhere from 4 to 6 (the more I think about it the more I think there's a case for us being in front of MSU/Oklahoma), OSU anywhere from 5 to 7, and Iowa from 5 to 7. It's just a crapshoot.

We disagree - strongly - that most everyone sees this Iowa team as very good (unless by very good you mean Top 25). Most everyone does view tOSU as an elite team and Meyer as an elite coach? Iowa and Ferentz? No. I think most everyone still sees Iowa as skating by against a weak schedule. I think most everyone would expect Stanford to beat Iowa and not be that impressed with the win. I think most everyone would take notice of and be impressed by a win against tOSU.Â

Maybe they have a better signature win than Iowa, but they both lost to MSU and if Ohio State's schedule was tougher than Iowa's, it was by hundredths of percentage points or however one measures it. Both schedules were ridiculous. If the committee is the blind judge of worthiness that it's supposed to be, Stanford will be in the top four. They are not and we won't.

All this love for tOSU is the same kind of bias that drives pundits in the east to ignore McCaffery and default to the next Alabama Voldemort winning running back. I know I remember posts on this board during the season critiquing tOSU's soft schedule, and they didn't even play that well against their cupcakes. And the impressive win against Michigan? When do any of you begin to question how good Michigan was this year?
I, for one, would LOVE to play Iowa in the Rose Bowl. They played an awesome game against Michigan State and came incredibly close to stopping them at the goal line w/ four downs from the two yard line with the game on the line. I find it difficult - after years of Stanford being misunderestimated in the same fashion - to render judgments about nuances of supposed superiority of tOSU over Iowa.
And Iowa finished ahead of tOSU in the one ranking that should at least be considered. The BIG10 standings.

AP Poll has Iowa had by a handful of points, Coaches poll has OSU. This is going to be so close.

Don't be fooled by the lack of eye candy/history.

So what, is the committee taking a break now after having announced the top 4?

Iowa would be fun since they haven't been in 34 years, and it's fun to face fanbase that cares. OSU would look better as a name brand, as others have said.

No, the committee is done. ESPN is just milking it.

Yeah this pause is total crap. But they have to cover important issues like the Clemson pizza party. And they have to ask totally serious questions like did they consider Oklahoma as #1.

I'm not saying the perception is right, CornFed. I'm just acknowledging that it exists. A Stanford win against Iowa wouldn't move the needle at all nationally. A Stanford win against tOSU would.

I get it, ST, but it's just another aspect of the same thing that gives the "powers that be" the ability to manipulate outcomes. I certainly get tired of Stanford being on the short end of that stick and empathize with others who suffer from the same persecution.
