Stanford athletes schedules & performances in the Olympics -
M T - 08-05-2016
I thought it would be good to have a thread to alert people to when Stanford athletes are performing and how they did.
I see that on Saturday, Olympic events local start times range from 8:30 AM (4:30AM PDT) to 12:15AM (8:15PM PDT). Note that the time in Rio is 4 hours ahead of us. It will be confusing when the TV stations announce a time and you aren't sure if it is US TV Standard Time Zone or Rio's time zone.

I've updated the posting I did. Thanks for the info.
I hadn't seen that
GoStanford.com page before, but I will be pleased if GoStanford keeps an up-to-date schedule. It appears their page was created a month ago, before many of the individual sessions were scheduled for the individual events.. So for the first person listed (Kong, in Epee), the session starts at 5AM our time (as shown on that page), but she isn't scheduled until 7:15AM.
I used the list of names from the PAC-12 site. It didn't have Folayan.
I was using pages such as
Â
http://results.nbcolympics.com/athletes/athlete=folayan-victoria/index.html
which show the women's rugby game at 9AM rather than the 7AM that GoStanford.com shows.
For gymnast Jessen, the NBCOlympics.com pages show his competing first on the 10th, not on the 6th as GoStanford shows. It does appear that his team is competing in an event today.
Similarly, the NBCOlympics page didn't have Manuel or Neal as swimming today, but clearly their relay event is being swum. While either or both of them may not swim in the prelims today, that event should be listed.Â
Reports are that Ledecky will swim on the 4x100 free relay was mentioned. (Personally, I don't think she should swim it as I believe that would mean someone else would lose that medal chance. Btw, the rules require that relay-only participants, such as Lia Neal, that are submitted as part of the overall Olympic team must swim on the relay at some point.)

Another update for Saturday's schedule to add the finals of the two swimming events.

By the way, in a battle between Stanford alumni, the US women's soccer team beat the football ferns (the nickname for the New Zealand women's soccer team) 2-0. Ali Riley drew a yellow card, I think for retaliating against O'Hara after the two got tangled up. I didn't watch, but apparently Riley was being feisty all night. Here's the recap with a Pac-12 focus.

Ha, that's Riley's MO. I think she's one of the best outside backs in the world, and has been the Oceania confederation's player of the year several times.
Funny that she got her yellow in a run-in with O'Hara, since the two are such close friends. But both are fierce competitors, so I'd expect nothing less.Â

Is it Silverferns (the national symbol of NZ) or just Ferns?

It's Football Ferns. Yes, it refers to the Silver Fern, but Football Silver Fern isn't alliterative.

So much of the programming is delayed on television it is confusing to follow. My favorite sport is women's volleyball with Foluke. It is played at 1:00 pm PT today Saturday.Â
It is shown on NBC at 4:00 pm PT. I believe it might be shown at 2:00 pm PT on some Spanish TV network.

USA Swimming announced this morning that Katie Ledecky is going to swim in the 4x100 Free relay, so she will have a chance at 5 gold medals.

We also had a woman single rower advance to the quarterfinals
Turkey WBB with Seb lost
Mens water polo lost 7-5 to Croatia but it's lol pool play and top 2 on each pool advance. 4 of 5 goals scored by Stanford athletes

Actually the top 4 in each pool advance, so the U.S. is in good shape, although seeding is vital for the knockout rounds.

Most of the New Zealand women's teams are some variant of the "ferns". Basketball: tall ferns (thanks for the correction), Cricket: White ferns, Football (soccer): Football ferns, Rugby: black ferns. The men's teams are usually a variant of black, most notably the "all blacks", the men's rugby team.
The Australian teams have so many nicknames that there is a wikipedia page devoted to them:

Simone Manuel will swim on the 400 Free Relay tonight (earned that with a top 2 finish at OT). Katy Ledecky will swim as well, earning her spot with the fastest swim of the 4 US swimmers on the prelim relay. They will be joined by Abby Weitzell (won the OT) and Amanda Weir (3rd at OT and 2nd fastest split this am).
The US will be heavy underdogs to the Aussies, who have 3 of the world's 4 fastest 100 freestylers on their relay. Canada and Netherlands will also be in the battle for silver.
