Training camp thread -

Probably worth creating a dedicated thread for media, posters' observations, and commentary related to training camp.
Here's Wilner's take:

I'm sure we would all love it on this board if some member(s) who is/are close to the program could give us frequent updates on the happenings of the Stanford football training camp.Â
PRETTY PLEASE

Solomon Thomas looks very lean. That's impressive for a man his size.

The Rivals camp preview says Taboada is "working through an injury" and may or may not be ready in time for the opener. Anyone know what this injury is? Of note, Shaw said if Kaden Smith is healthy - which is not being ruled out as a possibility - he has no problem playing him as a True Frosh.Â

Players are always "working through" an injury these days rather than just being injured. I guess the purpose of that phraseology is to convey the notion that they are actively trying to improve their condition, rather than sitting around waiting for nature to heal them.

A couple of curious comments in that article.
Quote:Francis Owusu is their most physically-talented wide receiver,
Hmmm. Maybe, though I haven't really thought about him that way. Outside of the miracle catch, I wonder just what makes them state this.
Quote:Michael Rector will be their most productive wide receiver and Trenton Irwin should see a good share of third-down targets.
Both statements are probably true, though I think most Stanford fans are hoping that Irwin's production will be more than some third down targets ... not that those aren't very important.
Quote:The defensive line will be anchored by the versatile and productive Solomon Thomas and fifth-year senior DT Jordan Watkins.
As far as I can tell, this one simply involves not doing their homework.
Thomas for sure.
Watkins seems to be among those who might grab the #3 starting spot, but if he is really an anchor then I will be impressed by his late career development.

You interpreted both of those statements differently than I did. With Owusu, he's perhaps the best combination of size and speed that Stanford has at the position. As for Irwin, they're not saying his targets will be limited to third downs. Rather, of all available third down targets, he will receive a good chunk.

Taboada got scoped for a sports hernia. May be able to participate in 2nd half of Fall practice. Questionable for K St at this point.
K Smith still rehabbing. I'd guess a red-shirt is most likely prognosis.

I see two odd characterizations:
1. Referring to Chryst and Burns as "Rookies" is spot-off.
2. Dylan Jackson is not in the mold of Chase Thomas or Trent Murphy. He's a DE, not an OLB.

What he means of course is that Chryst and Burns will be new to the starting roles, in other words inexperienced.
You are certainly right that the usual definition of rookie is someone new to the program, not to a starting position.
As far as Jackson is concerned, I think he means tall and rangy, rather than referring to specific position.

Shaw sounds mildly positive, shall we say, on the QB situation.

I don't get the Dylan Jackson remark either. He's much bigger than Thomas and thicker than Trent Murphy, built like a big DE and not at all like an OLB or tight end, which Chase was in high school. Henry Anderson is the closest match, but with the lower body of Josh Mauro.

Maybe the rosters are inaccurate, but Dylan is listed at 6'6" 248.
Chase Thomas was listed as 6'4" 243.
Is that much bigger?
