Sounds like this will impact Notre Dame's two deep.Â

Question to consider- will California's pending passage of a recreational marijuana bill make Stanford and other California schools more desirable for recruits? Has it made an impact in Colorado or Washington?

I've got no objection to marijuana use, but not sure we want the kid who makes decisions based on where pot's legal.

Losing Redfield would be a big deal.

Reading those Irish posts, I am struck by quality of the young men Stanford has attracted to its football program, while operating at the highest levels of competitiveness. I know "pride goeth before a fall", so I am reluctant to get too boisterous about our run of good luck. But something tells me it is not just lucky.

Not very Catholic of them to be so dismissive of these young men. As usual, the comments are quite revealing. "They weren't pulled over and charged because they were black, they just broke the law," but also drop in "getting elite athletes means you're recruiting criminals." These guys twists themselves in pretzels trying to hide their racism and prejudices in a way that makes them seem like they aren't, but their comments leave you with no other conclusion than they are.
The data shows these football players well could have been pulled over because they are black. They may have only been charged because they were black. Moreover, a car full of white young men may never have been pulled over to start. This is a reality not even registering among those ND fans.Â
For me, it's simple. If you're a responsible adult with sound judgment, you don't get in a car with someone who might have an unregistered (perhaps stolen) gun or have one without the proper legal permits. The marijuana thing is pretty benign, but the gun is a much bigger deal.Â
ND fans are calling for dismissal from the team. I think that's a bit harsh, particularly depending on what the records of those arrested. If it's a first offense and someone didn't know there was a gun, a game or two suspension seems warranted. But kicking off the team and out of school seems not to be the very Catholic thing to do. In Redfield's case in particular, he's studying Chinese and has talked about a career in the CIA, so I doubt he's some terrible person who routinely exercises bad judgment.

My first thoughts were that it must have been the equivalent of a car crash for Coach Kelly, losing 6 players in a single night. I feel for those kids. True, they are adults and they have to take responsibility for their actions. But one stupid night - loss of scholarship, expulsion, prison! Wow...
I sure hope we never have to see similar headlines regarding our beloved Cardinal. Young people are always bound to make stupid and reckless decisions at some point in college. I know I definitely did (nothing involving guns!). I was just lucky to never have been involved in an incident with life changing consequences.
I hope that Coach Shaw's recruiting process ensures that anytime a group of our young guys get together off the field, the likelihood of stupid decisions is reduced rather than increased (as is the norm on college campuses including Stanford campus on Friday nights )

The pot should get them 1-2 games, but whoever had that gun should get a whole season.
Easy way to find out whose gun it was - bring all five of them in and tell them that they have 10 seconds to tell me whose gun it is. If nobody owns up to it, they all sit for six games.

I don't disagree with you there and it's not likely to be a big impact, but I bet there is some.
I've read that Colorado and Denver in particular have seen a big jump in people moving there after they passed legalization measures. I would imagine college students wouldn't be immune to that, and football players are still college students.

I'm not a crim law expert but not sure the coach wants to ask that question...may find himself more involved in the legal proceedings than he wants. I dont think there is a coach/player privilege against testifying.
And I agree the pot use alone isnt major, but if they knew that one of them had a loaded unpermitted gun in the car with them, that's a bigger deal.

I have always been put off by ND's moral self righteousness (literally holier than thou). I remember the "Catholics vs Convicts" t-shirts that their students produced during the rivalry with Miami. Shoe on the other foot this morning.

Let's just say I became an atheist while going through the Catholic confirmation deal when I was 14, and leave it at that. My point is I thought part of the Catholic religion is suppose to be about forgiveness. ND fans don't sound very forgiving or even like they have any empathy for the young men involved in the car incident.
