WBB: 2018 Recruiting -
2006alum - 10-23-2016
Didn't see a thread for recruiting for 2018 and now that it looks like we got our four verbals for 2017, though it was worth starting a new thread.
Was at Stanford this weekend for reunion and at my class tailgate I spotted Amy, Kate, and the Hull twins walking to Arrillaga, so they must have been visiting campus this weekend. Hard to miss two tall twins with the basketball coaches. ;) I'll presume this is a good sign? Right now they're listed as two of the four "considering" us for 2018
per HoopGurlz/ESPN.

I know it's a battle every year, but hopefully more recruits ranked around Lexie Hull's level (#17) or higher will be considering us.
For once, I like to see a top-5 recruit seriously consider us. It would be nice to have another immediate impact player to top off the good recruiting classes we've had the last couple years.

These are the names for 2018 that were mentioned by one person or another during our 2017 thread:
Shayley Harris (PN 48)
McKenzie Forbes (ESPN 40)
Lindsey Jarosinki
Lexie Hull (ESPN 17)
Lacie Hull (PN 94)
Now, some of this may be based on a known connection, some may be merely a wish list at this point. It is still very early. All but Shaley Harris are listed by ESPN as considering Stanford. ESPN doesn't list Harris, Jarosinki, or Lacey Hull as within its top 60 at this point but of course a lot will change as they progress through their Junior seasons. These are all kids who are only about to start the second half of their high school basketball careers!
*edit to correct spelling and add Bob's PN ratings*

Shayley Harris, # 48 on PN and with offers from Stanford, Duke and most if not all the Pac 12. UCLA offerred yesterday.Â
Lacie Hull, # 94 on PN.
Now I corrected the spelling on both for you 81. LOL on me spelling correctly

They committed it seems.Â
Lexie is rated:
ESPN #16
Bluestar #35
PN #34
Coach Bill, who I believe works closely with Bret McCormick at ASGR calls her a Top 20 recruit.Â
Hopefully, we can land a good/solid post.

How does this work, Bob? Does Stanford admissions ever admit athletes at the beginning of their junior year in high school? Or is this like Anna Wilson--they are committed but still have to be admitted?

This is really early, especially compared to this year's class.
Re: WBB: 2018 Recruiting -

Still have to be admitted.  While this is rare in WBB, we have many 2018 and some 2019 commits in other sports.Â

Fantastic! The WBB staff has been busy lately - we went from 0 future commits to 6 in the span of just a few weeks! They must have committed right after their visit - so random to have seen them on campus this weekend!
Their size and style of play sounds more like more of the Candice Wiggins mold than any guards we've had since. We struggled a ton last year at mid-range and getting our guards to move inside, so the Hulls will fill a nice gap there.

I really like the signing of Lacie and Lexie. I have followed girls hoops in Washington for a couple of years due to my niece, and saw these twins play twice at the state tournament this past spring. Super high basketball IQ, smooth and confident, and excellent fundamentals. Neither is strong enough to play inside, although they will get their boards due to understanding how to block out. They run the floor well. Think of them like the Samuelson sisters: tall, slender and good shooters. They did have trouble in one game on defense with a decent player who initiated contact, so don't look for them to be anchoring the middle.

Ive been doing (club) for 36 years and theyre the two best all-around players that Ive ever coached, Spokane Stars director Ron Adams said.
Adams cited a long list of the top players hes had including Angie Bjorklund (University High/Tennessee), Briann January (Lewis and Clark/Arizona State/WNBA), Emily Westerberg (CV/ASU) and Aubrey Johnson (Post Falls/ASU).
At the high school level theyre the two best because they have no weaknesses, Adams added. They work their tails off and they havent even come close to reaching their potential. Theyre going to become awesome college players

They will have a couple years left in high school to work on their defense, plus with our deep recruiting classes the last couple years, I think they will have time to adjust and learn from Tara and the coaching staff once they get to the Farm (all presuming they are admitted next year)

With the twins committing, how many spots left we do have for next year's class? Just one? I think if we just have a solitary spot, Tara would be aiming for a post player, given our lack of depth there and our plethora of guards and wings. This thread might be very quiet for the next year if only one more spot is open

Currently we have 13 on scholarship.
Briana, Erica, and Karlie graduate this year (S2017) -3
Williams, Moschkau, Dodson and Jerome enter next year (F2017) +4
Barring injury related redshirts, Kaylee, Brittany graduate (S2018) -2
Lacie and Lexie Hull enter (F2018) +2

Sum Total = 14 leaving one scholarship free
The 14 we would have in F 2018 would be (with the Hulls): 1C, 3F, 4W, and 6G.
Yes, I would think the last slot would need to be for a big. But who knows, maybe Tara will go for small ball with the right players. Also, players classed as wings might develop into forwards, guards into wings, etc. Dodson is listed as a wing, for example, but is 6'3".

We need a big. Our only bigs in the 2018 season are Fingall, Coffee and Smith. Smith looks more like a stretch 4. I guess we really have to hope Coffee develops, otherwise, we will probably play small. I do think if Carrington stays injury free, she'll be one of the better players and a 2 or 3 year starter at the SF position. Dodson can probably back her up at the 3, but with her size, can move over to the 4 (and if as good as her ranking, able to make U17 team, etc) and play minutes with Carrington. Fingall is likely our starting post player. If Coffee develops, she will back up Fingall, unless Smith gets stronger, then she can play some back up 5. I still hope we land a post for our final schollie (Harris, Jarosinski, etc).
If Williams is as good as advertised, she will probably start by her Sophomore year, probably play a 2 PG line up, with likely Sniezek as the other starter (unless Wilson starts with Williams...which is possible). We have gone small with Orrange/Thompson and Thompson/Roberson, so I can easily see a guard rotation of Sniezek/Wilson/Williams. Of course, as we've seen in the past, Tara has a knack of recruiting under the radar players (Kokenis, Thompson, etc), so maybe Brewer, Jerome or Moschkau will be great contributers, more so than a Dodson/Carrington/Wilson/etc. We never know how a recruit will pan out, but from everything I've seen, seems like Dodson will be a major contributer with her versatility.
PG: Sniezek (SR) / Wilson (JR)
SG: Williams (SO) / Brewer (JR) / Romano (SR)
SF: Carrington (JR)/ Dodson (SO) / Hull (FR) / Hull (FR)
PF: Smith (SR) /Â Jerome (SO) / Moschkau (SO)
C: Fingall (JR) / Coffee (SR)
