Chryst out 6+ months, Burns to transfer - pcgoode - 01-11-2017

Wilner has just posted a story about our QB situation. Chryst apparently having surgery and out for at least six months, Burns transferring. In Costello we trust...

Re: QB Situation - washingtonismoney - 01-11-2017

Probably fair to say Burns knows Costello is better than he is, then?

Re: QB Situation - socalstanfan1 - 01-11-2017

Here's wishing Costello good health. First defensive player who touches him in Spring Ball loses his scholarship.

Also wishing complete and speedy recoveries to both Messrs. Chryst and Mills

Could well be the case. Crazier things have happened, but is it realistic to expect Burns to light it up at another program given his performance at Stanford?

Re: QB Situation - standfan - 01-11-2017

"His absence takes on greater significance because of another development: Senior Ryan Burns, who replaced Chryst in the Sun Bowl (and started the first seven games of the season) is expected to leave Stanford under the NCAA’s graduate transfer policy."

Most of us expect it, but does Wilner have any actual information from a reliable source?

Re: QB Situation - needle - 01-11-2017

Big news, but not surprising.

Best of luck to Burns and congrats on getting his degree, assuming the report is correct. I'll never forget the UCLA comeback.

Get well, Chryst!

Re: QB Situation - OutsiderFan - 01-11-2017

I honestly can't believe there were people on this board last week contemplating that Burns could/would/should have a meaningful role on the 2017 team.  The handwriting was all over the wall.

Re: QB Situation - OutsiderFan - 01-11-2017

Wilner just doesn't understand his job very well.  It's a very poor commentary on his skills and judgment to not include the words "Davis Mills" and "Number one-ranked QB prospect in class of 2017" in that story.

When was the last time a true freshman played QB for Stanford?  Barring utter disaster, there's no way Davis Mills will play next year.

Re: QB Situation - FarmBoy - 01-11-2017

The chances for utter disaster don't feel that remote given where we are. Here's hoping to speedy recovery and Costello taking full advantage of this life opportunity he's been given.

Re: QB Situation - StanfordIndians1 - 01-11-2017

Not really news.  Most already assumed this.

No way Mills can digest the playbook.  Guys-no frosh QB will ever start at StanU.  So bury Mills name until 2018 season.  End of story there.

Burns will either transfer or hang em up.  Both are the same to the program.  He has given 4 years and deserves a pat on the back.

Chryst is out.  He will come back slowly but by then Costello will be firmly entrenched.  Costello is the QB taking the starting snaps against Rice and game #2.

Costello is the QB whether like it or not for 2017.

Yeah I figured he had actual facts, especially since that's part of the headline.  But then I remembered it's Wilner.

Agree. I don't expect him to stay, but I won't rule it out until either Burns or Shaw/Pritchard says it. Wilner may have information from a "reliable" source, but the lack of a destination makes me wonder how reliable the info is.  At worst, we should get some hard data in 3 weeks. If Shaw says he isn't returning, his departure is for sure and possibly not entirely of his own choice.

Re: QB Situation - FarmBoy - 01-11-2017

My guess is Wilner's source includes the speculation from reliable sources like Cardboard discussion threads.

Re: QB Situation - donkey687 - 01-11-2017

I wonder if Burns was not offered a 5th year and was told that before the Sun Bowl and he started making alternative plans.

Re: QB Situation - CornFed - 01-11-2017

Oh.  So you think he's got credible sources then?  :P

I don't think so. I am sure that we'd prefer having an experienced back-up next year given Chryst's injury.

Re: QB Situation - OutsiderFan - 01-11-2017

What is the resistance to simplifying the playbook to get the best players playing and contributing ASAP?

And, what if Costello is hurt?  Do you play a lesser talented walk-on so you don't have to play the True Frosh who has elite talent and potential?

The hope is that the walk-on actually is an adequate stand-in, but if he isn't, do you flush your season down the toilet just to preserve your - overly - complicated offense?

I think, based only on extrapolating how Shaw seems to operate, he would only tell Burns that he had no scholarship for year 5 if he really, really, needed that scholarship for 2017. As of now, I don't think that is the case. But two other things could have happened. Burns could feel that things weren't fair to him this year, that he got all the "hard" games while Chryst got all the "easy" games. He could also be aware that (rightly, IMHO) he has a long climb to get the full confidence of the coaches, teammates, and (emphatically here on the Cardboard) fans. So even if he thought he could beat out Costello, he may have decided it was too unlikely to count on. The other thing that the could have happened is the coaches just told him " you can stay, but you have no shot", in which case he decided to go.
It is also possible he had decided to go before Chryst got hurt, and now may decide not to. Or anything else. "Reliable sources" aren't.

Re: QB Situation - fullmetal - 01-11-2017

I think the playbook involves a lot of ability to read/react appropriately to opponents' defensive positioning, alignments, and tendencies.  That probably comes first, followed by the ability to correctly pick a pass protection scheme and communicate it.  Finally comes the ability to determine the optimal offensive play and communicate it.
