Haase to catch big recruiting break? - washingtonismoney - 03-29-2017

Reportedly former UW recruit -- the highly-ranked Daejon Davis -- is leaning to Stanford: https://twitter.com/GoodmanESPN/status/847199954019901444

Must have been admitted in the fall but that's still a question

Davis goes to the Seattle public high school that has a rigorous academic track. It's the magnet school for the high IQ public school students. It has a great reputation amongst admissions officers for producing well rounded and college ready kids. He certainly would have had the opportunity to take a course load that admissions would find acceptable.

However, I heard that he has said that Gonzaga was the runner-up to UW. Maybe Gonzaga doesn't have any room now.

I hope it is true. We need guards. Shooters and ballhandlers please.

A little tangent here, but is there ay material difference between the admissions process for football vs. the other sports?  I mean it isn't uncommon for known Stanford football commits to be denied admission.  But I can't seem to ever recall any hoops commits being denied admission, after committing to Stanford, for example.  Have there been any?

Fingers crossed. That would be a brobdingnagian, brobdingnagian get, and would totally change the complexion of our chances for success over the next couple of seasons.

Fingers crossed for Daejon, as the Stanford experience and degree would likely totally change the trajectory of his life during and after college! :)

Re: Haase to catch big recruiting break? - BobK - 03-30-2017

Many coaches at Stanford don't want public commits prior to being  admitted.  Dawkins was one.    Yes we have had rejections in many sports.  Usually of course we can only guess.  I mentioned a great athlete in another sport recently.

Wasn't Darren Daye rejected?

Davis commits to Stanford: https://twitter.com/JoshGershon/status/848252892779651072

very well done by Haase.

brobdingnagian brobdingnagian and huger.  Best class. Since 2002.  The Lopi.

That's fantastic news.  With the graduation of Sanders and Allen, there will be plenty of playing time available for Davis if he's ready (and it sounds like he is).

That might be a bit of an exaggeration.

The 2014 class featured the #7 PF (Travis), #10 Center (Humphry) and #10 PG (Cartwright), plus a fourth prospect 3* Pickins.
This class features the #10 SG (Davis), #14 SF (Okpala) an unranked 4* rated PF (Da Silva) and a fourth prospect.

On paper, 2014 was a better class, but of course we will see how they do once on campus.  The key is that Haase signed a solid class after his first year.

It depends on which recruiting service you follow. 247 has Da Silva, Davis, and Okpala all in the 40-70 range.

Re: Haase to catch big recruiting break? - BostonCard - 04-02-2017

24/7 is pretty good for football, but I'm not sure they are quite as reliable for basketball.  In any case, they certainly weren't 3 years ago.

In any case, it is a stretch to say that this is the best recruiting class since the Lopez brothers, when the comparison to 2014 is dependent on which recruiting service you use to benchmark.

Don't get me wrong, I am very happy with this class; I think it's a good enough class that with a good coach (I am hopeful that Haase will be) and more continued good recruiting, they ought to be able to get to the NCAA tournament multiple years.

Re: Haase to catch big recruiting break? - scorecard - 04-02-2017

I am not much into comparing our own classes, but the key is that this class addresses our most glaring weaknesses -- outside shooting, perimeter defense, and an inability to break down defenses off the dribble.  Teams could sag on Reid Travis, knowing that we couldn't or wouldn't shoot the 3 ball aside from Pickens.  We couldn't keep guards out of the lane either, as we were slow of foot on the perimeter.

Daejon Davis gives us a 6'4" guard who can defend and rebound, but also is a clever passer with a nifty handle.  What an absolute steal to get this late in the game.

Kezie Okpala is going to be something special at 6'8" with small guard skills.  He can score and shoot with deep range.  Will be interesting to see where he plays for us, as he played a lot of point guard for his team, but defensively played more of a center in high school.

The international prospects are going to be better than "unranked" as well.

Oscar da Silva is 6'9"-6'10" with a 7'1" wingspan and moves his feet extremely well for his size.  DraftExpress rates him as the #5 international prospect born in his year (1998).

Isaac White may be 6'1" but we need a guy who is repeatedly described as "fearless".  You can see that he is a more than willing 3 point shooter, and he doesn't hesitate to take an open look.

Don't forget about the return of Kodye Pugh, 6'8" versatile lefty, reminds me of a Stacey Augmon with range.

So we bring in 5 new players, 2 new guards and 3 versatile swingmen from 6'8-6'10".  This should be a clear upgrade from what we are losing.  We get longer and faster on the perimeter, and more skilled and versatile offensively.  I am very excited for what Haase can do with this group next year, especially when putting these pieces around a player like Reid Travis (who dominated down low against the Ducks even when they had Jordan Bell and Chris Boucher).  Haase and his staff deserve some real kudos for putting this class together, especially coming off a fairly underwhelming season.

Re: Haase to catch big recruiting break? - 2006alum - 04-02-2017

This is brobdingnagian. That we're even talking about whether this recruiting class is as good or better than 2014 is terrific, because Dawkins had had half a decade to recruit that class, and this is after Haase's first season. Moreover, whereas we were coming off two extremely solid years with the Lopii twins and had been a top tournament seed several years prior to Dawkins' arrival, this class is signing up solely on their faith in Haase (and the awesomeness of Stanford generally, of course), because the program at this point has had no significant history, reputation, or credibility for the middle school and high school years of these players. Major props to Haase and his assistants.

Re: Haase to catch big recruiting break? - winflop - 04-02-2017

YYYYUUUUUGGGGEEEEE win for Coach Haase!!  And for Davis too!!

I'm tempering my expectations for next season simply because these are HS players, but only for next season.

Re: Haase to catch big recruiting break? - Durty Nelly - 04-02-2017

A shooting guard is an exceedingly large proportions area of need!!!    Haase has gotten an excellent recruiting class.  Looking forward to next season.

Re: Haase to catch big recruiting break? - Hurlburt88 - 04-02-2017

When I read about a 6'4" shooting guard who can defend & rebound, my mind immediately thinks of Todd Lichti.  Here's hoping for more comparisons over the years to my favorite hoopster!

And I did forget about Kodye Pugh . . . good reminder.Â
