McCaffrey no private workouts - Hurlburt88 - 04-16-2017

I heard on the radio that he is refusing all private workouts with teams.  Apparently the risk/reward ratio not attractive to him--feels comfortable with current expectation to go by #15

Re: McCaffrey no private workouts - FarmBoy - 04-17-2017

Why not work out for the top 10 at their request? Or top 5?

Re: McCaffrey no private workouts - SUBuddha - 04-17-2017

As I understand it, private workouts happen at the school the student attended. CMac is already back on CO. Now, he could possibly do an individual workout for a team on one of the visits he has done.

Re: McCaffrey no private workouts - Hurlburt88 - 04-17-2017

The report I heard was referring to individual workouts while visiting specific teams.

Re: McCaffrey no private workouts - fullmetal - 04-17-2017

Ah, the strange saga of maximizing draft placement continues...I still don't see how teams in the bottom half of the NFL (with the top half of the first rd picks) don't load up on linemen and defense...but I'm not a GM.

Re: McCaffrey no private workouts - DC 86 - 04-17-2017

A player not doing any private workouts is often an indication that he has a draft guarantee. A team will promise to draft a player if he is available on the condition that he not work out for other teams. Certainly this would be a plausible scenario for Philadelphia at #14 if they prize him as has been reported.

In any case, numerous players have decided not to conduct private workouts and still been drafted by teams that requested a workout and were turned down. There is as much game tape on McCaffrey as any top player in the draft, he took part in all the drills and tests at the combine, and he took part in Stanford's pro day, so it's not as if a team is taking on risk of the unknown by drafting him absent an additional workout.

Re: McCaffrey no private workouts - JJJ - 04-18-2017

Quote:There’s less incentive for him to use the private workouts to elevate his draft stock since he’s projected to be a high first-round pick. Since February, McCaffrey’s seen his stock rise from a fringe first-round pick to a potential top-10 selection (the eighth overall pick in SB Nation’s latest mock draft). Given the risk of injury, there’s more at risk for him in taking the private workouts than declining them.

Quote:“I feel like a lot of people don't give me credit for my skills and talents,” McCaffrey said. “That's just the way it is. But I also don't really care too much. I don't feel like I'm crazy disrespected. I have a chip on my shoulder at all times.”

I really wish I'd see a little less of this publicly from McCaffrey.  He's about to be taken in the first half of the first roud, as a running back, because of his skills and talents.  He really has very little basis for complaint.

I had dinner tonight with an old friend, a Texan who loves football.  But then I repeat myself...;)

The topic of McCaffrey arose.  Said Texan played football at the collegiate level and numbers some ex-NFL players among his friends.  He thinks McCaffrey goes in the second half of the second round.  Great numbers, but ethnic bias and position bias and the Sun Bowl boycott will harm his draft position.

Isn't this quote a little bit dated?  I thought he said that before the combine, maybe before the Sun Bowl.  He wasn't getting anywhere near so much love back then if I'm remembering the timing correctly.

Re: McCaffrey no private workouts - dabigv13 - 04-18-2017

The quote appears in a lot of articles March 2nd, around time of combine.

Re: McCaffrey no private workouts - BostonCard - 04-18-2017

Ok thanks for the context.  I figured it was given around the time of this article.  I still think it was a less than wise thing to say publicly.

That would seem to be an Aaron Rodgers-esque drop if it happens. Then CMAC will be able to play the "chip on his shoulder" card the rest of his career.

I found myself rooting for CMAC to get that high draft pick more than I though I would following the Sun Bowl. My interest in his pro-prospects were pretty low after the boycott, but as news of his "rise" trickles out, I'm hoping he gets that top-15 pick that's being whispered.

Methinks that "Said Texan" is misinformed.  Latest data I've seen (c. 12 hours ago) has CMac as a lock in the top 10, along with Solly.

"Lock" in the top 10 sounds like a stretch for an RB in this market, but would like to see it. If Aaron Rodgers can slip from #1 to late first round, a RB who is not the consensus #1 can easily slide. It all comes down to whether a team values RB high enough and prefer CMAC over the remaining available RBs.

Re: McCaffrey no private workouts - Griffins78 - 04-19-2017

Perhaps, he isn't trying to go highest in the draft.

Just as not all teams would value McCaffrey's skills and role on their team equally, he might have preference for the team he wants to play for that will give him the best chance at success. He probably has more information on the ownership, coaching, and personnel of the teams as any player in the draft. Going later in the draft would likely put him on a better, less desperate team.

Re: McCaffrey no private workouts - SF_Cardinal_Fan - 04-19-2017

There is plenty of information which a team may use to evaluate a potential draft pick; including loads of game film, scouting combines, private conversations etc...
At least with regards to likely first round selections, "private workouts" does not make much sense.

Re: McCaffrey no private workouts - fullmetal - 04-19-2017

I still can't see a top 10 pick or the like.  I think teams are going to be enamored with Dalvin Cook and Leonard Fournette (regardless of fumble-itis concerns).  And teams certainly need linemen and defensive upgrades.

But--the higher the better from this fan's perspective!

Do you mean early or later? I'd prefer he'd go later in the 1st or even the 2nd, as that would mean he would go to a higher quality team.  Same goes for Solly, or any Stanford player for that matter.  With the possible exception of the Niners, which could mean higher probablities of accidentally bumping into recruits during visits.

Re: McCaffrey no private workouts - fullmetal - 04-19-2017

Later in the first round would probably be best, long-term.  But I would prefer earlier in the first round over second round.
