Stanford WBB Recruiting 2018 - 14xthat - 06-02-2017

Stanford has 2 verbal commits in both 6-1 Lexie (#17 in the Nation), & Lacie Hull (#10 Wing). They have 3 considering in 6-5 Post Olivia Nelson-Ododa (ranked #1 at one point; dropped to #3), another 6-5 Post Lindsey Jarosinski (#13 Post) and 5-10 Guard Zakiya Mahoney (#49 guard). *all rankings to change during mid-July, November, * April & May 2018*
I think if we get the 3 considering to commit to the Cardinal I think we would be in pretty good shape, and definitely a contender for the championship. Out of the 5, 4 may be ranked, hopefully, all 5. And that would probably give us the best recruiting class depending on their rankings.
Olivia and Lindsey bring good size along with Maya 6-3, Alyssa 6-3, Shannon 6-5, & Nadia 6-3. The twins help at the perimeter with DiJonai 5-10, Alexa 5-10, Mikaela 5-10, and Estella 6-2. And Zakiya brings aggressiveness & scoring and will most likely play a 2-3 (based on how she is built, and plays). Kianna 5-9, Anna 5-7, & Marta 5-8 are the points.
It will be a fun, and interesting season if things go to plan. (: #GOSTANFORD

Thanks for posting about WBB and welcome to the CardBoard!

I moved your post here because the recruiting board is only for football, so WBB fans might not notice it there. I also fixed some spelling errors because the urge to copy edit is strong.  ;)

Re: Stanford WBB Recruiting 2018 - BobK - 06-03-2017

Don't know about the guard but the NY Olivia is still possible.
After not getting Boley and going strong after her it's going to be interesting
So hard to transfer to Stanford for any student

Re: Stanford WBB Recruiting 2018 - Jskass - 06-03-2017

Okay so now I guess I understand what transpired with Boley. Don't we only have one additional spot for 2018? Does that mean noone else gets an official offer unless our top pick (ONO) doesn't commit?

Re: Stanford WBB Recruiting 2018 - BobK - 06-03-2017

I don't mean to imply I
Know    Just a very educated lol guess

Re: Stanford WBB Recruiting 2018 - TheFarm07 - 07-17-2017

I hope we are still on Olivia Nelson-Ododa's radar; an elite post will fill out the team nicely for the next couple years, but another top recruit has us as a possibility:

Jenna Brown, #2 PG and #11 overall just re-opened her commitment after a verbal to N.D. and Stanford was one of her options according to her father: http://www.espn.com/espnw/sports/article/20087118/elite-point-guard-jenna-brown-reopens-recruitment-committing-notre-dame?addata=espnw:womenbb:index

Never one to refuse an elite prospect, but from the position need standpoint Olivia would be a better fit as we already have Kiana Williams coming in this year.

As a fan should think Brown.  Just  sayin

Better chance of landing Brown? If so, then Tara will have a smaller, potentially very athletic guard-oriented lineup for the next couple years

BobK knows of which he speaks.  Brown committed.

Re: Stanford WBB Recruiting 2018 - qwerty49 - 07-21-2017

Great news on Brown.  On one hand, it's interesting that we look to have a guard-oriented team the next few years, and now certainly with a level of quickness and athleticism that we might not have seen for a while.  And this after a pretty long cycle of dominant bigs.

But I think the reality is that our recruiting pool is so small that we just focus on closing on the best we can.  Tara has certainly proven that she can coach either way -- although having an Appel, Ogwumike, or Wiggins sure helps.  ;)

I'm hoping that this might be the year we can watch an injury-free Anna Wilson show her skills.

Re: Stanford WBB Recruiting 2018 - 81alum - 07-21-2017

So that rounds out the 2018 class.  This is the earliest I think it has been sewn up that I can remember.

And yes, our team is looking to go small in future years, I guess.  Maya Dodson and Nadia Fingall had better come on strong.  Perhaps Estella Moschkau, at 6'2", has already impressed Tara as a possible insider.

Jenna Brown looks outstanding.  ESPN 11, Prospects 12.  A point guard who also likes to score.

Quote:Poised game manager with a scorer's mentality; collapses defenses, finds the rim with consistency and feathery touch on floater jumper; handles and distributes in transition; confident offensive attack; among the elite back court prospects in the class of 2018. (Olson)

She had committed to Notre Dame and appears to have changed:

The Stanford/ND nexus has been quite interesting in the last few years, with us losing Skylar to them, and watching Lili transfer to them, but knocking them out of the NCAAs twice in recent years and now taking this talented prospect away from them.  It seemed for the longest time that we never played them and had no real history with them--but now they feel like a real rival.  I wonder how much Lili will play for them this year?  Their roster is down to 11 with 5 guards.  PG Lindsay Allen graduated.  I imagine ND will use Lili extensively.  Not sure whether I hope we will play them this year or not.

Brown was the PG on the US U17 team and at one point was thought to be the best point guard in the class.  She hurt her knee a year ago--I'm not sure if she has played since.  Her sister plays basketball for Princeton.

Re: Stanford WBB Recruiting 2018 - TheFarm07 - 07-21-2017

Wow, interesting. A little disappointed that we are out of the running for Olivia Nelson-Ododa, but nice to see that we got another Top-15 prospect.

Hopefully, the bigs we have (Fingall, Dodson,) will be able to step up on the inside, both offensively and defensively.

On the plus side, we could have one of the best backcourts in the country if Williams, Wilson and/or Brown develop as advertised, it's hard enough to guard one elite guard as we've seen with the likes of having to face Plum, Canada, Wiese, Ionescu, etc. But if we have two of them on the court at the same time, like that NC State team that nearly upsetted Texas before we play the Longhorns who had two guards drop 30 points on them, that would be awesome.

Re: Stanford WBB Recruiting 2018 - 2006alum - 07-21-2017

Fantastic! Great to land another top recruit. I wonder about Brewer - I know for a while there we weren't sure if she was planning to remain on the team. Do we know if anything's changed? I got the sense that we were right at the top of Nelson-Ododa's list, and Brown's decommit and commit happened so fast that it makes me wonder if she learned something new about Stanford quite recently?

In other words, are we sure this class is done and there's no chance Nelson-Ododa is still in the running? BobK, any insights here?

Re: Stanford WBB Recruiting 2018 - 81alum - 07-21-2017

We had 13 on the roster last year:  Coffee, Wilson, Fingall, Johnson, Roberson, Smith, McPhee, Sniezek, Brewer, Carrington, Romano, McCall, Samuelson.  We would have had 15 except for the early exits of Kailee Johnson and Lili Thompson.

Three graduated:  Roberson, McCall, Samuelson.  That brings us down to 10 scholarships carrying over to 17-18.

Four are coming in:  Williams, Dodson, Moschkau, and Jerome.  That takes us to 14 scholarships on the roster for 17-18.

At the end of this season, Kaylee and Brittany graduate.  They are the only seniors.  So we will go to 12 scholarships carrying over to to 18-19.

We now have commits from Brown, Hull, and Hull for 2018.  That will put us at 15 Scholarships for 2018-2019.

So the only chance of getting a fourth scholarship for 18-19 is if one of our existing scholarship players left.

Now, the speculation about whether one of our existing scholarship players might be leaving, allowing Tara to unexpectedly grab a fourth recruit (which would mean she still has room for a post) is just that--speculation.  It might be true, or it might not.  But if it were true, I would be highly worried.  It is just as likely that such a departure would be the result of a player leaving for medical reasons as for anything else.  And we have an obvious candidate for such a departure, and I deeply hope it won't happen.

Re: Stanford WBB Recruiting 2018 - CompSci87 - 07-21-2017

There's lots of news from an interview with Kate Paye in this FBC post: http://fbceventnews.blogspot.com/2017/07/kate-has-high-hopes.html?m=1

Particularly relevant to this thread, both Anna Wilson and Mikaela Brewer are cleared to play and have been practicing.

OTOH, Kaylee Johnson is rehabbing a knee and isn't cleared to play yet.

Glad to hear it! I had thought the question marks around Brewer we partially of the Kailee Johnson variety (e.g., whether she was interested enough in focusing on basketball). Glad to hear it was just injuries, and that she has fully recovered from them!

Never a question 2006.  Never.

Re: Stanford WBB Recruiting 2018 - TheFarm07 - 07-22-2017

With the Class of 2018 wrapped up, hopefully there will be elite, academically eligible posts and forwards in the Class of 2019 that will want to play on the Farm. I'm sure Tara is cognizant of the need to replace Alanna Smith and Shannon Coffee when they graduate in two years.

I'm intrigued at how Tara adapts the offense/defense to these more guard-oriented classes the next couple years.
