QB tale of the tape - washingtonismoney - 10-07-2017

I don't think the second half added much clarity in terms of what QB is in fact better -- though I winced at Chryst's floated throw to the tight end after the punter bugaloo early in the second half.

But it's clear Shaw thinks Chryst is the better QB. While the two QBs split much more time than is typical Chryst handled more series and threw more passes.

Meanwhile Costello was more effective on a per-play basis. Though given the number of plays for each I don't read a ton into it.

Given the weak evidence I don't see a strong reason to change my view that Costello is the better QB.

Re: QB tale of the tape - BostonCard - 10-07-2017

I think that's fair.  Neither QB played awfully, but neither distinguished themselves, so there is no strong reason to overturn your priors.  I too think Costello might be a bit better, but it's pretty close at this point; I think both assessments are reasonable.  I suspect Shaw will start Chryst next time and, like today, mostly play Chryst.

Chryst played better than I expected him to, but I think Costello got a bit hosed by a couple drops that would've made him the clear winner. At any rate if Chryst can keep up that level of play going forward I think we'll be fine, though barring a defensive/Love miracle we'll lose to at least two of UW/WSU/ND.

Between two QBs, we only threw the ball 24 times.  I'd say that Shaw decided that we would rely on our running game to beat Utah.  It worked.

However our running backs only ran the ball 23 times even though we were ahead most of the game.

You should probably add the 6 runs by the quarterbacks on the read option.

Re: QB tale of the tape - washingtonismoney - 10-07-2017

Yeah, I actually think most of the offensive coaching was...impressive today. Given the lack of Arcega-Whiteside I anticipated a weak passing game with a problematic receiving corps. But they were able to engineer a pretty strong offensive game with nearly 7 yards per play -- by far Utah's worst defensive effort by that metric.

The main problem, unfortunately, was red zone offense. Not sure what happened, particularly since Stanford has been pretty excellent in those situations so far this year.

Yes, 1 TD on 4 red zone trips was weak. Arcega-Whiteside absence really seemed to hurt.  Did Stanford even try to split out Parkinson and threaten to throw the fade?  Chryst failed to see a clearly open Irwin in the right corner of the end zone on the 1st drive because he had already locked on Kaden Smith.

Motion penalty on Marx was a killer.

Re: QB tale of the tape - UltimateCard - 10-07-2017

On the two TDs, Chryst made the correct read. On the first, the defense keyed on Love and Chryst scored on the keeper. On Love's long TD run, the safety (#28) took a step or two toward Chryst which left enough of a crease for Love to squirt through. On at least these two plays, Chryst made good decisions and sold the fakes against a good defense.

Re: QB tale of the tape - winflop - 10-08-2017

Chryst didn't play poorly enough to lose the job, Costello didn't play well enough to take it from him.

We still have two quarterbacks, which means we have none.

What bothered me was the continued jujitsu in the second half. I expected Shaw to pick one at halftime and stick with him for the second half.

Well, that needs to be taken with a brobdingnagian grain of salt.  Costello only had what, two series?  Whatever it was, he didn't have nearly the number of opportunities Chryst had.  Chryst was 50% completions.  This is who he is.  Costello was 60% completions.  This is who he is.  When you consider Costello also runs better, how does it not make more sense to give Costello more opportunities given he so clearly has more upside.

Re: QB tale of the tape - Durty Nelly - 10-08-2017

Shaw likely believes Chryst makes better pre-snap decisions.  It doesn't show up in a QB's stats, and it is not something we can evaluate.

I'm pretty sure Bryce Love set a single game rushing record with Costello at QB, so the pre-snap read stuff is a bit overblown, IMO.

Re: QB tale of the tape - Velodoc - 10-08-2017

I was at the game.  Tough win in a hostile visiting-team environment.  There seemed to be a palpable increase in offensive energy when KJ was at QB versus Chryst.  He's more athletic (avoiding that sac on first pass) and throws a consistently better ball.  The players seem to sense that.  Maybe there is a character issue that we don't know about. Or maybe Shaw is just stubborn.  I think we need to figure this out prior to that two-week UW/Wazoo buzz-saw coming. KJ has much higher ceiling and that Shaw refusal to play him is hindering his (and the team's) progress.

Re: QB tale of the tape - CardinalSagehen - 10-08-2017

Shaw’s assessment on the post-game radio show was that both quarterbacks played well, both missed some throws but also made some throws, and “I’d give both of them a B-.”  When the interviewer suggested that the plan to alternate QBs worked out in the end, Shaw was lukewarm and didn’t take any credit.  He seemed to acknowledge that the situation wasn’t ideal, though those weren’t his exact words.

Re: QB tale of the tape - lex24 - 10-08-2017

I didn't see first. But if you have it recorded go watch the second quarter. If you still think Costello was the more effective Saturday, I'd be surprised.

Chryst played well.

I still think Costello is better. But Chryst played well under what had to be a lot of pressure.

I am not really sure but I believe all our points came on Chryst's drives.

Yes, and he played well, but Costello moved the ball on one drive which should have been a score (ended with a missed short field goal attempt.)

Re: QB tale of the tape - lex24 - 10-08-2017

Let me suggest you saw  what you wanted to. Not what actually happened Sat night.  Agree KJ has higher upside. But KC played well. He was accurate all night. Hit big third down passes. Did a nice job with read option. No mistakes. Didn't get sacked. Heck of a game. Against a good defense
