Be surprised if Love plays - lex24 - 10-31-2017

Because I can’t remember a time when someone that was considered day to day played.

Having said that, I think the offense will be considerable better Sat than vs OSU. They have had another week to adjust to Loves loss. And I think they will be more varied offensively than they were vs OSU

Hey what can I say. I’m an optimist.

An optimist and/or someone who has set a rather low bar.

They can’t get much worse.  That said, I am also optimistic.  Looking forward to the line moving some people.

Amen. That is what this game will be about. Last year, we couldn't. This year, I think we can, and that will make all the difference.

It will only be more varied if Costello plays.

If you want to be optimistic, Bryce will be 3 weeks out from his ankle injury on Saturday. There has been online rumblings it's a high ankle sprain, but obviously no way to judge the veracity of that. 3 weeks should be within range of returning for most ankle injuries, and even feasible for some high ankle sprains as well.

I think a good chance he plays.

If Love plays, we get "good" Chryst, and perhaps "bad" Falk, I'm optimistic.
Lotta ifs there, though.

Re: Be surprised if Love plays - teejers1 - 11-01-2017

I'll be surprised if Stanford stays within 10 points of WSU on Saturday (am assuming Love does not play, or if he does, is not close to 100%).

But again, this turn of events would not rule out winning the Pac, though loss of Holder on the defensive side really hurts.

If the offense that played against OSU shows up and Falk is on, you very well could be right. It could get ugly.
Hopefully that won't be the case.

Re: Be surprised if Love plays - BostonCard - 11-01-2017

Yeah, the range of possible outcomes here is immense.  It could include:

Blow out WSU win: Falk is back to being good Falk; our defensive line can't generate pressure and without Holder our defensive backs suck.  Love is out and we get "bad" Chryst.  Here a score in the 40's to <10 is possible.

Blow out Stanford win: Love plays, and we get the Chryst who played against Oregon or the Costello who played against UCLA.  We move the ball with ease against WSU's smallish defensive line.  In the meantime, Falk struggles with his confidence and Hilinski throws a bunch of picks.  We win by something like 48 to 21.

Close, high-scoring game: Love + good Chryst or Costello vs. good Falk.  Track meet with scores on most possessions.  First team to 50 wins.

Close, low-scoring game: The weather wreaks havoc on the offenses.  Lots of turnovers, bad throws, no running game because Love is out, etc.  If either team scores 20, it wins.

My prediction: Stanford 7 - 56; WSU 14 - 45

This is what we in statistics call a "99% confidence interval." I love it.

Calling it now, both teams break 60 and prove BC wrong. Reid Travis shows up confused because he thinks the basketball teams are playing.

Re: Be surprised if Love plays - BostonCard - 11-01-2017

Or maybe it is a normal (95%) confidence interval when the standard deviation is higher than usual.  It would be interesting to see, but I suspect that we've probably seen a greater variance in performance this year than in year's past.

The over analyzing here is bringing on a headache. Enjoy the game boyz, the earth should still be spinning come Sunday. Only five months until the Masters.

Re: Be surprised if Love plays - jimM - 11-01-2017

Anything goes with kids aged 19 to 21. But all indications point to a comfortable WSU victory. Stanford took a big step backwards last week, and that generally doesn't get corrected in a week. Loss of confidence biggest factor. But a close second is the big home field advantage that WSU has historically. Third, WSU is probably the third best team in the PAC after SC and Wash.

Re: Be surprised if Love plays - rudruff - 11-01-2017

So Stanford's win was more of a loss and WSU loss was more of a win?

Right, because Falk being pulled for a QB who wound up throwing 4 interceptions is a great confidence builder.  Like Stanford, WSU "took a big step backwards last week", so whichever team can correct its problem (as difficult as that might be) will be best positioned to win.  The fact that the game is at WSU would favor WSU (6-0 at home, but only 1-2 on the road), while Stanford is (3-0 at home, but only 3-2 [and functionally equivalent to 2-3 based on how we played] on the road).

WSU has at times looked like the best team in the conference, for example, when they beat USC about a month ago.  It also has a nice win at Oregon (33-10) and against Colorado (28-0) and Boise State (47-44).  At other times, it has looked atrocious.  Their 37-3 loss at Cal was a stinking pile of garbage where Falk seemed to either be sacked or throw an interception on virtually every dropback.  And their loss to Arizona last week showed some nice flashes (like when Hilinski first took over), but other periods where they looked like crap.

Love practiced today, and was able to cut: https://twitter.com/TheBootleg/status/925908848019308544

Yep, and also this comment in today's Stanford Football Notebook at http://www.gostanford.com/news/2017/11/1/football-notebook-washington-state.aspx: "Junior running back Bryce Love has returned to practice."

I was of the opinion that Shaw was being cagey again and Love would not play, because as recently as yesterday noon, Shaw said that Love had not yet returned to practice.  This changes everything.  I'd say the default expectation now is that he's trying to get ready to play in Pullman and probably will.

We all hope so. I am sure it will be a game-time decision though. How he feels tomorrow is pretty critical. If practicing didn't make it worse, he will almost certainly play. If he is hurting tomorrow, it doesn't mean he won't play, but it does make it less probable (stating the obvious).
