Costello to Start? - doubledub - 11-02-2017

Shaw was just on ESPNU Playbook and gave the explanation for Chryst playing so long in OSU:  (1) he didn't want to make a snap decision during a game, and (2) Chryst does well in practice and earns it.  Now Andy Staples and David Moulton are saying that they would be "shocked" if Costello doesn't get the start because it is obvious to everyone that the team moves the ball better with him than Chryst.  They also speculated that Chryst has had a long leash because of his presence in the locker room and the coaches want to be extra careful before give a team leader - a captain - the hook.  Reasonable enough...

That's a decision, not a snap decision.

But it is a decision on who takes the snaps. . . .

Re: Costello to Start? - CardinalSagehen - 11-02-2017

I missed the Shaw interview on ESPNU, but I was in the car just afterward when a very FIRED UP Stanford caller went on a long diatribe about why KJ should start over Keller.  One of his many points was that everyone on the Stanford message boards agrees with him!  (I think he was basically right about that, btw.)

The host, Andy Staples, very patiently let the guy finish his long rant, and then chose to respond mainly just to his side-comment about the Stanford message boards.  “You know the best thing about Stanford fan message boards?  They never confuse ‘you’re’ with ‘your’.  One is the possessive and the other isn’t... and then there’s the classic ‘loser’ and ‘looser’...”  So congrats to all of you for being recognized (or lightly mocked) on national radio today!  “Your” probably not feeling like “loosers” now!

For the record, Staples also said (or repeated, as I just learned from double e dub) that he’d be “shocked” if KJ doesn’t start.  This, along with yesterday’s news that Bryce started practicing, has me feeling optimistic on a Thursday afternoon.

That means nothing because everyone was shocked when DS left KC in the game despite his poor performance.

Yes, it’s just pure conjecture at this point.  But I have since listened to the Shaw interview and Staples’ comments were based on his read of what Shaw had just said, as others noted above.  “I didn’t want to make any snap decisions in the course of the game” suggests fairly strongly that he’s more prepared to make a different decision now.  Shaw also fully acknowledged, now with some distance from the game, that Keller was off and basically didn’t meet the standard.

We don’t know how the competition will unfold this week in practice or what Shaw will ultimately choose to do.  You are right that his propensity to defy the world and make unpopular QB decisions has been unlimited.

But just imho, this time he seems to be setting the stage for a change.

But we frequently screw up "principle" and "principal."  I'm sorry, I have to call it as I see it...

Re: Costello to Start? - Goose - 11-02-2017

I think it probable that Shaw is totally prepared to make the change. However, I would be surprised if Costello starts. If you replace your starter with a "new" starter, it is real hard to go back. It sends the message that you really don't have confidence in either of them. It is "safer" to start Chryst on a short hook. If the reps in practice are divided 50-50, it doesn't operationally matter much who starts. At some point, if Chryst doesn't play well, you have to pull the trigger and name a new starter. I don't think Shaw is quite there yet. I guess we find out on Friday?

Re: Costello to Start? - washingtonismoney - 11-02-2017

The question is whether Staples is the beneficiary of some off-the-record knowledge (possible, I suppose) or he's just making informed speculation. For mostly better and sometimes worse, Shaw is his own man -- so I think informed speculation from a national observer is less reliable than usual. Even though Staples is a fairly sharp guy.

If you don't have a Sirius/XM subscription, it looks like you can still listen now for free on a free trial:
1) Go to https://player.siriusxm.com/#/welcome
2) Click Listen Now.
3) Find channel 84, ESPNU radio.
4) Scroll back to 11:03AM, Coach David Shaw.  You can drag the current position of the player back a whole page and find 11:03.

I used the Sirius app because I have a subscription.  ESPNU was literally the only reason I renewed in Sept.  It's one of those subscriptions that you can end up getting for ~$5/month if you just periodically threaten to churn.

:D

Andy Staples, southern food aficionado.

P.s. According to my Twitter timeline David Shaw went on Paul Finebaum's show today. Laura Rutledge, the sideline reporter for the Stanford-OreSt game, is a regular... maybe she persuaded Shaw to agree to come on their show this week. Here's the link, Shaw comes on at around 13:30... http://www.espn.com/espnradio/play?id=21265390

What? The only reason I can tell for DS to go on Finebaum is that he wants the UFlorida job. I have never heard mention of anything on that show except SEC, SEC, SEC...with perhaps an occasional Clemson or Florida State drive-by.

Re: Costello to Start? - Treebound - 11-02-2017

Interesting news regarding Shaw on the Finebaum SEC show.  Has Shaw been on that show since Paul made a stink about Shaw's comments last year regarding setting up Harbaugh like out of state practice/recruiting camps?

Finebaum's a Tennessee grad and seems to have a chip on his shoulder about SEC stereotypes.  Could make for an interesting interview.

Re: Costello to Start? - cardcrimson - 11-02-2017

Listened to Finebaum a lot when I lived in the South. He's a very smart guy--he plays completely to his audience, but is quite knowledgeable about college football across the country.

Funny show.

Re: Costello to Start? - ChicagoCard - 11-02-2017

I sometimes download Finebaum mp3s for my commute (if there is a compelling guest). Finebaum is definitely an admirer of Shaw and Stanford. I can only remember him hammering Shaw for being overly conservative in the 99th Rose Bowl and sticking up for the honor of the South in the wake of Shaw's comments about satellite camps. And those were just bandwagon comments in the moment, not particularly focused. Finebaum has on the other hand ridden Harbaugh pretty good for his various antics. And in the trivial factoid department, Cardboarders might be surprised that it wasn't long ago that SU's President went on the Finebaum show (the former Pres, the guy with the Silicon Valley background). I think they were talking about college athletes and compensation.

Maybe we’re onto something here.

Now somebody really needs to start the “Love to Start?” thread.  And on Saturday morning, I recommend the “Stanford to Roll WSU?” thread.  There seems to be some kind of inexplicable cosmic connection!

What about, "Stanford has a path to the CFP?"?
