Thankful for our RBs over the years -
thunder_chik - 11-22-2017
Just reflecting on the amount of talent we've had at running back the last few years, and how much fun it's been to watch them.
Also, how fleeting careers in pro football can be:
Toby G=Vikes, Jags, now ?
Tyler Gaffney=mostly injured, Panthers, Patriots, Jags, now?
Jeremy Stewart=Eagles, Jets, Raiders, Broncos, Hamilton Tiger Cats, now ?
Stepfan Taylor=Cardinals, now ?
Ricky Seale=Bills, now ?
Remound Wright=product development engineer at AT&T Foundry
Anthony Wilkerson=working in Bay Area at Spotify
Kelsey Young=grad transfer to Boise State (11 games, 91 carries, 470 yards, 7 TDs), Redskins May 16-Sept 16, software engineering in N. Calif.
Barry J. Sanders=grad transfer to OK State (28 carries, 93 yards, 2 TDs, 9 passes for 45 yards), marketing job with video game company
Perhaps C-Mac will fare better (I hope). Also hope Love decides to stay another year.
Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Always wonder what Tobys career could have been. Playing behind the best back in the league gave him precious little chance. When he did play, he played well. Then he went to the worst team in the league. OTOH, he made a good chunk of change and saved some wear and tear on his body.

So long as we are reminiscing about great running backs....
without looking.....
Who in the modern era is second in rushing yards per attempt to Bryce Love's 8.84 in 2017?
(400 yards +Â for the season minimum, since 1950, don't count Bryce Love 2016.)

...and the answer is...Andrew Luck! 8.24 in 2010. The next best modern runner in yards per attempt is Anthony Bookman in 1997 with 6.56, then Darrin Nelson in 1978 with 6.34, and only then do we come to Christian McCaffrey in 2016 with 6.335.
I would not have guessed this. I watched Nelson but not Bookman. I would guess that Nelson got a lot more 10-20 yard runs than McCaffrey and Love but fewer home runs. That is a guess, though.

Bookman kind of a forgotten man. He are Mitchell made a nice combo. Kind of thunder and lightning.

Also thankful for Darrin Nelson, Brad Muster, Vince White, Mike Mitchell, Touchdown Tommy Vardell, Anthony Bookman, Jon Volpe, and just for the heck of it, Brian Allen, J. R. Lemon and Ernie Nevers. And Pete Kmetovic. And Dick Hyland. And Kenneth Tolon.

Speaking of forgotten men, surely Brad Muster deserves mention. Hard to believe so many names have been noted without his coming up.

The only ones in the record books not mentioned so far are Lou Valli, Ernie Caddell, Bobby Grayson, Ray Handley, Dick Hyland, Bill Tarr, Phil Moffat, Bob White, Bubba Brown, and Bill Rogers.
These guys tend to be from the 30s, 40s, and 50s, although I bet there are some people on this board who will remember Bubba from 68-69.Â

He was mentioned. "Muster the ball carrier." Some amazing performances. Ten 100 yard games and 28 touchdowns. He will be the next runner in total yards (3010) that Love will pass (2732). He had three games in which he ran more than 34 times. A durable runner who pounded defenses into submission. He was Toby before Toby was Toby. He was also a terrific receiver--he had 78 receptions in 1985.Â

I think Mike Dotterer is the only former Stanford RB with a Super Bowl ring, Oakland Raiders '84. Drafted in '83 by both the Raiders and Yankees, Dot chose football and made the Raiders roster before tearing his ACL.
I'll remember Dot for a number of plays, including his fumbled pitch-out, recovery, and wild dive to the 1st down marker on a 4th and 1 vs #1 ranked USC in '79. That was a brobdingnagian play on a drive that culminated in a TD that tied USC 21-21.
His long TD run vs #1 ranked UW in '82 was stunning.
And of course, if he just stayed outside on his long run on Stanford's final drive in the '82 BG, "The Play" would never have happened.

Oops.
Well, glad he is recognized. Very stand-up guy. As an aside, I heard he lost all of his memoribilia in the recent Northern California fires. If so, another sad loss from that devastation.

Nelson had a lot of receiving yards, catching more than 50 passes a couple of times IIRC. I remember seeing him go 80yds with a screen pass against SJSU.
