OT: karma points - 82lsju - 11-26-2017

so I find the high volatility in Karma points interesting.

I never paid much attention to them until all the recent comments on them and now actually look at them in posts.

I have seen several peoples points swing radically in short periods of time over the last few days.

I just noticed Lex is now slightly negative when last I saw was in the 70s.

Phogge has been in the low positive points and last I noticed on order of -40.

I did figure out that while you cannot up or down vote any post more than one consecutively you can vote repeatedly for the same post if you vote on another one in between those votes, so

1.  up/down vote person X on a post
2.  up/down vote any person on a post
3.  up/down vote person X on the same post as in #1
4.  up/down vote person on a post
5.  repeat as many times as you want

Re: OT: karma points - CompSci87 - 11-26-2017

Interesting find! I would vote (repeatedly if possible  ;)) to turn off the reputation points system.

Maybe I would have to volunteer to code up a new implementation of the old point system for individual posts to make that happen....

Maybe we’ve got a troll who’s built a down/up voting script? I noticed a weird downswing in my own points a while back, and couldn’t figure out what the heck was causing it. I don’t mind negative points for controversial arguments, that’s just sometimes how it works. But I hadn’t thought I’d made any particularly spicy posts so dunno.

I've never even noticed my points.  Are they worth anything?  Do they mean anything.  After a certain number of minus points, are you kicked off of The Cardboard?

Since its not in the mobile functionality I don't really see the current system, but the individual post system was far better. I think most of the board would appreciate that CS87 if you can make it work.

It seems to hurt some people's feelings when they go negative, and I don't think that's a good thing for the board.

I ask for your votes. It’s getting harder to live with the shame.......

Aren't we switching to an entirely new board system in the offseason anyway? We could just live without it for a couple months.

Huh.  Okay.  Sounds like legal awards.

I work for 480 (or so) lawyers, and they looooooove their meaningless awards.  Martindale Hubbell, Chambers, SuperLawyers, Best Lawyers, Benchmark Litigation, Legal 500, LawDragon, snapdragon, whatever.  I have a summary of 1,300 lists, rankings, directories and other repositories that do absolutely nothing to get a lawyer hired, but feeds lawyer egos like crazy.

Re: OT: karma points - lex24 - 11-26-2017

I’m plus 10. “You like me. You really like me.”

I always wanted to channel my inner Sally Fields.  :P

Re: OT: karma points - lex24 - 11-26-2017

I don’t think anyone takes it seriously. I’m just trying to have some fun.

Re: OT: karma points - North Woods - 11-26-2017

I’m not a lawyer but enjoy the karma ratings to encourage constructive and thoughtful posts. It would be nice to see which specific comments got up/down voted though. Currently the ratings just mysteriously change but it’s a black box.

Re: OT: karma points - jacketree - 11-26-2017

You mean they’re not like Bitcoin?

Dang.  I always tip at least 20 percent including the tax. That’s how I try to build karma points.

Re: OT: karma points - cardcrimson - 11-26-2017

Lex, I added a few and the click on someone's post then again on yours works. I found that if I click on two different posts of yours in the same thread I get this:

An Error Has Occurred!
Sorry, you can't repeat a karma action without waiting 1 hours.

Who knew.

Don't think I ever did a karma point thing before today.

Yeah, of course, if Yvonne is still excited about a different software package, it won't pay to put any work into this one. I haven't heard an update on that lately.

I tried and found I can upvote the same post over and over. Thought it was a bug, but maybe I'm allowed to as an admin. Oops, have I abused my power doing that?  :P

Re: OT: karma points - cardcrimson - 11-26-2017

Kind of bummed though. Was happy wallowing in my negativity, now I'm plus eight. A new high. Gotta find a way to fix that, have to really up the inane, sarcastic, and antagonistic posts. Perhaps a "Fire Shaw" thread is in order. After all, if he's started KJ sooner, we'd have a shot at the playoff, right?

On the version of the board in effect in 2014, a poster who sunk to the level of -50 was dismissed.  In addition, the most-upvoted posts were in an external section called "Messages of the Week."  In 2015, we didn't vote on posts or members at all.
