I feel Shaw bungled the final 1/3 of the game -
phxfan - 12-29-2017
4 key possessions I can point to right off of the bat:
Following the forced fumble Shaw's first priority needed to be intermediate passes to get into FG territory. It was obvious by then that points were going at a premium. Also the defense was beginning to get tired and Shaw put them back on the field too soon.
Our FG from inside the 10 was a big wasted opportunity with Costello missing the wide open receiver. One would think he'd be taught not to throw into the double coverage.
On the supposed fumble by Bryce Love. Over the years I've never felt the officials respected Shaw. Could he have thrown the challenge flag on the spot. That proved to be a devastating sequence.
On our final touchdown we wasted a time out we needed at the end of the game. Also, on the two point conversion we seem to have the most vanilla deep redone playbook in the country.
The final offensive possession was of course a complete disaster start to finish.
This game makes me even more concerned about the decision to promote Tavita. Our brain trust on offense is utterly without merit.

Pretty tough to blame this one on the offense when they put 37 on the board. Actually there is plenty of blame to go around.

TCU was clearly the better team. Our offense and defense were physically outmanned in the second half. Given how much stronger TCU looked, I thought it was good coaching to get us the lead for most of the game and have us with an opportunity to win on the final drive. I don't blame Shaw for the delay of game or false start or INT. That is mostly on Costello. Costello looked like a redhshirt frosh that hasn't won much outside of Stanford Stadium. He will be better next year.Â

That's exactly the way I see it. TCU was fast and figured us out and that was that.Â
2nd best tean in the Big12 is no slouch. TCU has been just as good a team as us since the beat us in the rain back when Luck was a redshirt. OU was their USC this year. And I think OU is a better team than USC.

Of course you do. First, Im relatively confident they dont teach throwing into double coverage. Not sure, but I think so. Second, I know refs respect Shaw. Because I saw it. Often. What did you want to see on the two point. Please open up your playbook. They scored 37. A good offensive showing. Unfortunately they couldnt stop TCU. Perhaps they need new defensive coaches.

I agree that it's hard to blame the offense when they are in a position to win and nearly do. What irked me was the repeated Love runs up the middle on first down and then, a telegraphed second down pass. Despite TCU dominating the second half, a win could have been achieved by opening up the playbook IMHO.
Letting Costello do a few read options would have kept the defense honest - I recall one of the commentators saying much the same thing.Â

This loss was earned by all three branches of the team. Yes, the offense looked inept when it counted the most. But the defense, after the first quarter, seemed to fall apart--like Notre Dame TCU victimized us with long passes. Giving up a 93 yard pass should simply not happen. But no one has mentioned special teams. We would have won the game but for giving up a touchdown on a punt. Outkicking the coverage--perhaps the coverage was off but maybe our superb punter needed more hang time and less distance on that howitzer.
Freshmen and sophomores will have to step up next year if we are going to have a better season. The year of Wedington, Okereke, Smith, Swann, Sarell, Little, Adebo, Wade-Perry, and maybe even an incoming freshman like DE Thomas Booker.

They did run on first more than I would have liked. They got off to a great start in second half running. Obviously felt they could continue. Also I think trying to control ball keep defense off field may have played into it.
But again its always coaches when they lose. They got outplayed. TCU had considerably more speed. Defense got torched. Didnt help that Reid went down.
