The Loss to TCU -
ljw63 - 12-29-2017
We did not lose the game because of TCUs speed. One play, the open receiver in the end zone, would have completely changed the game. Having said that, TCU was better prepared and more highly motivated. Our offense was highly predictable and our defense was often disorganized (possibly due to loss of Reed). We rarely if ever rushed more than 3 or 4 and never really pressured their QB. Costello, who seemed to be on a nice learning curve for the last few games, reverted back to his early self. I think Phillips will be downgraded in the draft because he was outplayed by the TCU center and I think Love will lose ground because of seeming to be injury prone.Â

I sort of have a feeling that Love may come back now.

Every time we lose people seem to want to blame the "predictable" Stanford offense. This is one time when I think that is the least applicable.

BLUF: TCU's OL outplayed Stanford's. That was the difference in the game.Â
Too many nothing runs and not good enough pass protection from Stanford. Meanwhile, the TCU OL pretty much dominated Stanford's front. Stanford DL were glued to TCU OL too many times.
TCU blitzed a lot and it worked. Stanford hardly blitzed at all, a mistake, IMO, because Hill, like most college QBs, sucks under pressure.

If you don't keep giving B Love the ball, he doesn't run for 69 yard TDs. Seems incredible that people forget that.

We sure scored a lot of points for a unprepared team playing against a more motivated opponent that had allowed fewer than 19 points per game. Was it our sheer athletic talent on offense that simply overwhelmed them?

Amen brother. I've been repeatedly saying that only Oklahoma scored more points than we did against TCU. The offense played well!

I think you're right in the second half. They only gave up 10 points in the first half, and they really only had one drive. I also think injuries contributed significantly and I blame that for the loss.

Long time lurker here ... and the TCU loss has compelled me to register an account.
We do have a predictable offense. The predictability comes in the personnel groupings and formations. Having played college ball myself, and having been a defensive coordinator for high school football, there is nothing I loved more than when opponents only ran a certain set of plays from specific formations and personnel groupings. As fans we know far more often than not what play is coming by the personnel on the field and the formation. We make it too easy for defenses to prepare for us.

This is an interesting observation, as my recollection from the Harbaugh days is that we could and did run multiple plays from the same formation, making us tough to prepare for. Have we slid away from this a bit? If so, correctable if coaching staff recognizes it
