Currently: Pence, Hernandez, Duggar, Parker, Slater, Williamson. A group the 62 Mets would turn away. Jay Bruce just signed with the Mets. But no fear. Bobby Evans patiently awaits making a deal or two. And we know what a great job Evans has done. ð§

I have no problem with SF passing on Bruce. The guy is a terrible fielder and the Giants need to improve their OF defense. I would rather see them go with someone who can consistently make plays on D than hit an occasional HR. The Giants won three titles by focusing on pitching and D. IMO, that is still a winning formula.

In 1962 in the expansion draft Casey Stengel picked Giant and Sunnyvale resident Hobie Landrith first. Asked why the amazing Casey said 𤣠without a catcher the ball goes to the backstop every time
Lex you never saw the Amazing Mets
Ok I had to say that. We will soon sign a CFer  Other than that and you left off Shaw its p poor

Agreed that Bruce wasn't the answer. The Giants need right handed power and Bruce was a lefty who excels in tiny parks. His bat exit speed was only one m.p.h. faster than the league's average -- in fact, the exact same as Brandon Belt. Belt and Bruce are very similar in other esoteric batting aspects as well. Plus, he wanted a four year guaranteed deal taking him through age 35 (he got a three year deal). We already have one aging bust of an OF on the team in Pence, at least Span is gone.
I know the Giants want McCutchen. And he would be a good, not great get. .363 OBP last year with an .849 OPS. Was an All-Star for vie years in a row, finished top five MVP voting four years in a row through 2015. Subpar year in 2016, rebounded in 2017. Had one double in 21 trips to the plate at AT&T this year; .275 with an .818 OPS in his career at AT&T.
I think Slater could have a superb year -- and he's cheap, which the Giants dearly need. he's patient at the plate with a .339 OBP, had a .740 OPS, .282 batting average. I think he starts the year in center field. Fun fact: Slater hit .372 at home, with an .891 OPS. I'll take that, yes I will.

The difference between the '62 Mets and the '17 Giants was that the Mets were fun to watch. Marv Thronberry was a much more interesting player than anybody the Giants have. All World Incompetent. Plus Casey had a pulse. Bochy has lost his.

At this point in my life my sports loyalties are fairly equally divided between Stanford football and the New York Yankees. I should mention that in addition to writing my football blog, I'm also legally authorized by the New York Yankees to accept any new fans who might be interested. (You don't know the power of the Dark Side.) You can DM me for all the required paperwork. As far as outfields go, I think you'll find ours is quite operational.

I wouldnt call Pence a bust. He was a key contributor to the Giants success this decade. However, he is aging not so gracefully. With a year left on his contract, I think that it is safe to say that this will be his swan song in a Giants uniform.Â

Pence can't stay off the DL any more. So he only counts as half a roster spot. Anything more than 100 games from him is pure gravy.
McCutchen has had his injury problems too. His best days may be behind him. I wouldn't sign him to anything longer than 2 years -- if someone like Boras is his agent, forget it.
Agree that Slater deserves a shot. IF they sign McCutchen they can go with Slater in LF, McCutchen CF, Pence in RF. Then when Pence gets hurt in June they can try another combo, maybe suck it up and platoon Parker and Williamson again.
The Giants are always worried that their lineup is too left-handed. Haven't they figured out how tough that park is on RH batters? Posey and Pence do well because they are not dead-pull hitters. Posey goes to the right side better than just about any hitter in the league and Pence has always been an up-the-middle guy.

1) McCutchen is not a free agent, he has one year left on this contract and is being shopped by Pittsburgh. So there is no commitment beyond 2018 but would require trading assets.
2) McCutchen's offense rebounded last year but his defensive play has deteriorated dramatically over the last three years. Playing CF in a park like AT&T would be a disaster.

Are you kidding me complaining about the Giants? These are the glory years, three championships in seven years!
How dare you!

Statcorners says that AT&T gives up 1/3 fewer home runs to lefties and 1/4 fewer home runs to righties.

Okay. Pence is a non-bust who has a career .272 with the Giants, .260 last year in 134 games with 13 home runs, 40 RBIs and a .701 OPS. He's making $18.5 million, btw.

Re: OT: Giants outfield -

Because baseball contracts are guaranteed, many of the long term deals are structured to overpay at the end to balance how underpaid players are early in their careers. Pence was worth far more than he was paid during the glory years. Now he is reaping the rewards.Â
In other words, no matter what happens this season, Pence is worth every penny of the $18.5 he will receive.Â

I like Pence. He just has been hurt too much the last couple years. Its hurt him some offensively and even more defensively. They dont win in 12 and 14 without him. Problem is, as of today hes their best Outfielder. That isnt good.

Giants signed all five of their arbitration eligible players yesterday to one year deals (Panik, Dyson, Gearrin, Strickland, Will Smith).
ZIPs projects that the Giants should do much better in 2018, and that (hopefully) 2017 was an anomaly, a severe downside disappointment:

Though Pence wasn't around for the 2010 WS championship, it's hard to imagine a the Giants winning in 2012 and 2014 without him. Not only was he a good player who made big plays, he was an emotional spark for the team. When you factor in his on / off-field quirkiness and not exact adherence to baseball fundamentals, Hunter Pence was one of the most entertaining players you could ever hope to root for as a fan.
Watching your favorite player get old and deteriorate is like seeing your once spry dog no longer being able to pull off the athletic feats it once did. So just like a as a dog owner you need to ensure your best friend isn't asked to do as much physically anymore, as a GM of a sports team you need to manage how you use aging players.
Pence is not a full-time starter anymore. He's a a part-time starter, probably going into a pinch hitting role, who will be subject to defensive replacement in the games he does start.
On the greater subject of the outfield, it's an unmitigated disaster. The Giants have nothing tradable in the farm system to get anyone of consequence. Even if they could get McCutcheon, he's no long-term answer, and has his own injury history. They can't afford a big time free agent, and the current players are extremely limited and unproven. I have absolutely no clue what they are going to do for a CF. At least they can probably get by with corner outfielders comprised of Slater, Parker, Pence, and maybe Williamson, but how does your fan base take you seriously if you throw Gorkys Hernandez out as your opening day starter in CF? Steven Duggar isn't spectacular, but maybe he's the option.
Re: OT: Giants outfield -
BobK - 01-13-2018
McCutcheon is a free agent next season so to get him is a trade. Maybe a one year deal for the Giants makes a trade easier
Cain still a very good possibility as is Hamilton
Agree 100% with wall above. Pence earned every penny
Re: OT: Giants outfield -
wallendar - 01-13-2018
Because SF would have to give up two draft choices (a 2 and 5) along with some international pool money to sign Cain, it wont happen. I believe the Giants will trade for Hamilton and go with a mix and match in LF and RF (Slater, Parker, Pence, Hernandez).Â

I think Slater will be a very good outfielder. Hernandez was interesting. First half of the year -- really the first two months -- he was flat out horrible, looked like an A ball player. After those first two months, he played quite well. Hit .281 in the second half with a .709 OPS, reaching .760 before tiring the last month. Not a world beater, but not the world's worst either. Duggar batted .261 in a hitter's league, AAA. I don't know that he's the answer.
