Quote:McDaniels never had a franchise quarterback in Denver. Now he has Luck, the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2012; a backup quarterback, Jacoby Brissett, with whom he worked for almost 18 months in New England; four-time Pro Bowl receiver T.Y. Hilton, and tight end Jack Doyle, who recently returned from his first Pro Bowl appearance.

Quote:Luck is expected to start throwing again soon, if he hasnt already, but his future will be shrouded in uncertainty until he actually returns to the field and proves he can return to Pro Bowl form.
We shall see.

If McDaniels really had concerns about Luck's health, you have to think he would have taken one of the other head coaching opportunities out there this cycle, since he was generally seen as one of the top candidates, if not the top candidate. Tennessee would have given him Mariota and some great weapons. In Arizona, the defense is good and still in their prime and you could have rebuilt the offense as you wanted.Â
Anyway, one never knows how much of the coaching interview cycle to believe, but the word seemed to be out there that McDaniels preferred the Indy job to other opportunities, and that he felt comfortable about Luck. And if Luck's healthy this season, then Indy was the best available job, given the excellent job Ballard did in the draft and in free agency his first year as GM, the likelihood of landing additional good players due to high picks in each round, and the fact that Jim Irsay gives his coaches and executives a long (many would say too long) leash. (Irsay is often mentioned as a negative because he sometimes drops unfortunate quotes and has had issues with prescription drug addiction in his past, but Tony Dungy, Bill Polian, and others who actually worked with him tout Irsay as a big positive, because he knows football yet isn't inclined to interfere with his GM's decisions, so if you want to make a trade or a tough free agent decision, you go and make the case, and he'll OK it.)
I'm excited for Andrew. I'm trying not to get expectations too high, but I'd be surprised if they weren't immediately competitive again in the resurgent AFC South.Â

Also they should have a good draft position this year.

The 3rd pick in the first round (plus the 3rd picks in the 3rd, 5th, and 7th rounds, and the 4th picks in the 2nd, 4th, and 6th rounds, due to a tiebreaker with Houston) should have tremendous value whether the Colts keep it or trade it. Keep it and take edge rusher Bradley Chubb of NC State, or trade back to one of many QB-needy teams to hoard as many early-round picks as you can.Â
It's still a bad roster, but it was a lot better last year than the year before, QB excepted. And it'll get better this year. It takes time to dig out from a really bad GM like Grigson, but Ballard sure seems like the guy to do it. And I'm thrilled to see Andrew in a dynamic offensive system that should give him more options for early throws.

According to Adam Schefter, McDaniels is staying with Pats. Can't find confirmation elsewhere yet.

2 main threads of speculation as to the turn of events. Either Belichek plans to retire in the near future and wants Mcdaniels as his heir in New England, or Lucks injury being more serious then let on and thus the job being much worse then anticipated. I sincerely hope its not the latter.
Of course McDaniels could have just taken the extra time and come to the (logical IMO) conclusion that he wants nothing to do with Jim Irsay. All just speculation at this point, will be interesting to see how this shakes out. I will say that if Luck returns to his old self, his contract is already starting to look like a brobdingnagian bargain and could be a big trade chip if he wants to force himself out of Indy.

Of course, this is all just theater to set up the Harbaugh hire.

McDaniels backs out after verbally agreeing to the job. Stay classy, Patriots!
