MBB @ Oklahoma St Mon 4p PST ESPNU - winflop - 03-17-2018

I'll have to find somewhere to watch as I will be travelling. I don't have a warm fuzzy about this one. Stanford has not been a strong road team, and unfortunately has shown a Dawkins-esque inability to hold a lead in recent games.

Their top 4 scorers are all listed as guards - although 2 of them are 6'6". Guard play wins in the postseason. But they are seriously lacking in height. I expect OSU to play a lot of zone and try to force Stanford to win from outside. I expect the game will hinge on a) Stanford's ability to get the ball in to Travis & Humphrey, and b) Stanford's perimeter defense

19-10 OSU after 1 quarter.  Bad shooting is the story so far--it feels like we've missed 30 shots in the paint.

Stanford starts out shooting 6 for 22 including 0 for 6 from 3 before Pickens finally makes a 3.  Travis is 1 for 8 now 2 for 9. Stanford trails by 8 at the mid 2Q timeout.

8 turnovers so far.  3 traveling and 2 stepping out of bounds.  We're beating ourselves.

Reversal of fortune! 8-0 run for us (6 by Travis who was overdue), and OSU finishes the half 1-12 on FG.  30-29 OSU at halftime.

But a 10-1 run to end of the half and somehow we're only down 30-29. That score is incredible considering how we played most of the first half. If we eliminate the unforced errors in the second half, we have a shot to steal this.

Gosh, if we can clean up our playing, we'd have a comfy lead. As it is, we're down 1 in the 3rd Q.
And the officiating is pretty horrendous. (where have we heard that before?)

Davis picks up his 3rd PF mid 3Q so Stanford going big with Da Silva coming in.  Pickens moves to the point on offense.  Quicker OSU guards trying to double team and trap without Davis in the game.  Stanford staying in the zone on defense, but OSU guards able to get into the lane pretty easily. We'll see how long Haase goes before he brings in Davis, White or Cartwright.

After an awful first quarter, Stanford has really upped the defense. The offense is still leaving much to be desired, but they're up 3 right now.

As soon as I say that, Okpala, Travis and Travis again beat their man off the ball and take it to the hoop for short buckets.  Da Silva picked up his 4th foul so White comes back in.

This game is not good for my blood pressure.
But the flagrant on Humphrey wasn't particularly egregious.
And can't John Thompson III learn the name of our starters at the very least? Keeps adding an "s" on Humphrey...

Down 4 with a minute to go and suspect defense, we should've fouled.  This isn't the first time that Haase has tried to rely on his defense in late-game situations and gotten burned.

Congrats to the boys on a hard-fought season; OK State was a tournament-caliber team that got snubbed. Many ups and downs, but the fact is Haase brought the team into the postseason in just his second year. From 6-12 to 11-7 in-conference is nothing to sneeze at. I'm cautiously optimistic for the future - maybe one day we'll get back to having enough wins to get butts in Maples seats.
