Getting his MBA at Rice
May not have had that option at Stanford, or might have preferred Rice's program.
He graduated. He's going to a high quality school. Best of luck.
RE: Brian Chaffin transfers - Redrum - 02-07-2019
Rice was, what...2-11 last year? Which is worse: literally getting your head kicked in for 2-3 Rice Owl wins as training for the world of business finance.. or... paying/borrowing $59,750 ( one year's tuition) for Rice's Graduate School of Business ? Hey, that could be Brian's business school case study!

The morning Chron quotes him and he doesn’t mention Stanford or its coaches. Does say, “Go Owls.”
RE: Brian Chaffin transfers - Redrum - 02-07-2019
If Rice plays down (hell, maybe up ) to its recent norm of performance, at the end of the season Brian might feel that owls have taken up residence in his head. I'm all for guys who are pro-active about their life after undergraduate college, I just hope he doesn't regret "paying" tuition with permanent damage that we know football inflicts even at the college level.

Given the above comments, how do we apply that reasoning to someone deciding to take four or five years worth of physical damage to get an undergraduate degree? Does the number of team wins factor into that calculation? Does it matter if those wins are FBS vs D-III? I am an avid college football spectator, but recently I am having trouble seeing the value proposition from the student's point of view. That includes my alma mater, LSJU.

Question re value proposition is a good one. Factor in that student likely getting into a school that he couldn't otherwise get into, that some view it as training ground for NFL, that some really enjoy playing, that scholarship is not taxable so probably worth 50% more than it appears, and equation is more balanced. But lot of kids could probably get need scholarships if they could get admitted so value of football scholarship to them is less.

There are some players that play football because of the "value" analysis, i.e. they think it is the only way they can get into/pay for a good education. They may not be correct, in that borrowing is an option, or maybe they could get into the school anyway, but that is not their belief. However, most of the players want to play football. They enjoy it and find the risks and requirements to be acceptable in return for the enjoyment they get from playing. Players that play because they like football do however want to see the field. Chaffin probably did not expect to start at Stanford next year. He can probably expect to start at Rice. He may not get along well with the new OL coach at Stanford but did with the previous one. Under those circumstances, going to a weaker program where you can actually play may be much better than remaining at the stronger one where you probably will not. That is the value difference.

Both Wilson and Chaffin had issues with their situations over the last season or two. And we have a spate of retirements from still-eligible contributors. I'm worried and hope this isn't a trend.

They wanted to play and didn’t . Not everyone plays but we can bet that they all put in the work and want to and expect to play.
Sometimes a better younger player passes them. Not a new story

The first year of any big-time MBA program is a pretty tough workload and a true exercise in time management. Fortunately for him he'll only have to burn both ends of the candle from Sept thru Nov.

Has any football player in the past 20 years started their MBA at Stanford while playing their fifth year? Seems pretty far-fetched to me to believe that a place that basically has getting drunk every friday afternoon on the curriculum is going to allow a full-time football player who won't even be around to 'network' with his classmates.

Nobody in the past decade that I know of. The admit rate is TINY in the first place. Although we've seen alumni come back for MBAs at the GSB; Toby Gerhart is there now I think.

Stanford alumni Hillary Shockley and Jackie Brown speak of their high school sports careers, their recruitment to Stanford Football, and the 1971 and 1972 Rose Bowl games. They discuss coaches John Ralston and Jack Christiansen, memories of games and teammates, campus social life, and what it was like to be an African-American student at Stanford during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
