Is it a harbinger of bad news to see Lee and Valenzuela not playing in Stanford Tournament? Team minus those two is still in 3rd place, 6 behind Oregon. Our first 3 were all under par going into today's round. If Lee and Valenzuela had teed it up, it would have been a different tournament. Are they at Q School or whatever passes for qualifying for the LPGA? No comment on go Stanford as to where they were.

they are both listed here for the q-school that starts Mon 14 Oct 2019 in Venice FL

Lee played in Q School last fall as well. She missed advancing from Stage II to the Finals by one shot.
But even if either or both Lee and Valenzuela make the Finals and earn a tour card, they still could choose to defer until after the conclusion of the college season. Last year at least 2 of the 7 college amateurs who earned their tour cards did so (Jennifer Kupcho at Wake Forest and Maria Fassi at Arkansas).

At a minimum, the lineup at the Stanford tournament is a preview of life without Lee and Valenzuela. Freshman Angelina Ye is 2 holes away from winning the first tournament of her college career.
By the way, Lucy Li is also signed up for Q school stage II. She may forego college golf altogether.

Alice Walker apparently thinks Lee and Valenzuela will play this spring.
If so, it's the most lethal Stanford golf team ever.

They are both in Florida for Stage 2 of LPGA Q school.
Despite missing them, the women's team came in second this weekend and freshman Angie Ye won by 2 or 3 shots. I talked with Coach Walker and she was REALLY pleased with their performance, especially seeing some of the younger girls step up in leadership and be the players the team is counting on to play well. With two of the top 10 amateurs in the world at the top of the lineup, the rest of the team isn't often put in that position.
They have to be the favorites to win the national championship this year, but May is a long way off. Not clear if Lee or Valenzuela is going to finish the season before turning pro (I think they will). And injuries can always happen. I was surprised by the number of players wearing KT tape.

I'm not entirely sure how many players move from Stage II to the Q-Series (which has apparently replaced the Finals), but Valenzuela had a good morning, shooting a 3-under 69. Lee shot an even par 72. Through 7 holes, Li is shooting even par.

Thanks! So, top 30 and ties gets you to Q-Series for sure, and you need to cross your fingers if you're beyond that, depending on who else qualifies for Q-Series from different sources.
From the article you posted, 82, the impression I got was that if we get Li at all, it won't be for long. She'll have a Symetra Tour card after this tournament, apparently, though the earnings she could get there might not be worth it to her--only 12 women on the Symetra Tour made more than the cost of a year at Stanford in 2019. I understand that Symetra Tour card would allow her to play its events as an amateur, so perhaps she'll remain at Stanford while playing the occasional Symetra tournament. But I would think she's gone the second she qualifies for the LPGA. The article states she's too young to get her LPGA card through this year's process, so I suppose it depends on how bullish she is about her prospects at next year's Q-Series.
Li finished the day -3, so she and Valenzuela are both T17. Lee is T60 at even par. Again, Li can't get her LPGA card this year, but if she decides to play the Symetra Tour and finishes the season in the top 10, she'll get her LPGA card for the following season. (Apparently you can also get instant promotion upon your third win in a season.) Given that she said she's starting a foundation, and that she's "going to take the time from now until next season starts to really figure things out [regarding the foundation] with help from my family," it's hard for me to imagine her ever competing for Stanford. Hard to argue with the decision, either, though it might be worth gaining that acceptance and spending a couple of quarters on campus before joining the LPGA for the 2021 season, so she can always come back.

Valenzuela and Lee are well-positioned to advance to the finals after 54 holes of Stage II.
Valenzuela is tied for 7th at -7.
Lee is tied for 10th at -5 (with a few players still on the course)
Top 30 and ties advance to the Q-School qualifying tournament. If the tournament ended today, the cut line would be at -3.
RE: Women's Golf -
winflop - 10-16-2019
Valenzuela is tied for 7th at -7 and Lee is tied for 11th at -5. The current cut is at -3 for the Top 30 = automatic entry to final round.
RE: Women's Golf -
ColoradoTree - 10-17-2019
Both Lee and Valenzuela went -2 for the day in their fourth rounds, meaning both are through to Q-Series, the 8-round tournament over two weeks from October 23 to November 2. Valenzuela finished T8 at -9, while Lee finished T10 at -7. Li looked primed to qualify, starting today at -5, the same as Lee, but she went +5 to finish T71 at even par to miss out on qualifying for Q-Series. She's still set on the Symetra tour next year, though she apparently hasn't ruled out playing its events as an amateur. Her enrollment at Stanford does seem increasingly unlikely, however.
Congrats to Albane and Andrea!

You're absolutely right, and I hear you. Whether she joins the LPGA tour in 2022 or 2021 is not a life or death matter, and she'd get to spend 4 quarters at Stanford just by putting that off.
That said, she's a senior in high school now, and she's now allowed to play the entire Symetra Tour schedule in 2020. If she finishes in the Top 10 on that tour, she's got her LPGA card for 2021. (Even if she misses out on that but finishes in the Top 35 on the Symetra Tour, she automatically makes Q-Series next year, which is a step further than she got this year. And short of injury, there's just no way she doesn't at least make the Top 35 of that tour. Even a not-so-great year on that tour would get her to this same tournament next year, so she wouldn't be
losing any ground.) She seems laser focused on joining the LPGA as soon as possible based on her quotes, so if she thinks she has the inside track on getting a 2021 LPGA card, I'm not sure attending Stanford for fall quarter 2020 makes a lot of sense, especially since that would require her to retain amateur status the entire 2020 Symetra season rather than making $80K-$125K (which is the range of the winnings in the Top 10 last year).
I fully agree that you can't reduce the value of a Stanford experience to dollars, but she's an absolute phenom, and turning pro as early as possible is a rational decision for her. It's just that life is more than a series of rational short-term financial decisions, and it's always a good idea to have something to fall back on. Injuries happen. Phenoms get inconsistent. Adult pressures and the trying nature of life on a professional tour can break you down mentally and physically. I know we'd never get her for 4 years, but even a year means that door is always open to return. I get why she'd go pro as soon as possible, and she's a unique talent that's probably going to make tens of millions in her LPGA career, so I can hardly begrudge her chasing her dreams. It's just that Stanford is special, and her life would be enriched for experiencing it.

This article should provide reassurance for anyone unsure whether Andrea Lee plans to return to Stanford after Q school. It seems clear that she will stay at Stanford through the spring season, complete her degree and then move on.
https://www.lpga.com/news/2019-patience-has-paid-off-for-andrea-lee
She has great advice for people like Lucy Li too.
Quote:“The Stanford experience has been priceless, not just from a golf standpoint but allowing me to grow and mature socially as well,” she said. “To meet all the different people, being around so many intellectuals, it’s been the experience of a lifetime.
“I would definitely encourage all junior golfers to go to college and get their degrees,” Lee said. “I think I would have regretted coming out in the long run. So, I’m really glad I stayed.”

Partway through the first round (of eight!), both Lee and Valenzuela are at even par. Valenzuela started on the back 9 and bogeyed 16 before getting a birdie on 17 (she's through 9 holes), while Lee has been more up and down, with three birdies and three bogeys through 13. Lauren Kim is in the lead, at -4 through 13.
Half the field has yet to tee off, of course, but for the moment, Lee and Valenzuela are T14. FYI, the top 45 (including ties) get LPGA tour cards, so that's the line to watch.

I hope Kim and Danielson hang in there. Mariah Stackhouse is making some money on the tour and would love to see her get a win. Is it just Wie and Stackhouse who are currently on the LPGA tour? If Kim and Danielson can make it, followed by Lee and Valenzuela soon, Stanford would have some decent representation.
