2020 Starters -- predictions please! - Row80Critic - 11-24-2019

I'm ready to think about 2020.  Let's see those depth chart predictions.  Who will be the starters at each position next year, assuming everyone heals up....

RB    Freshman
FB    Freshman
LT    Freshman
LG    Walk-on Freshman
C      Freshman
RG    Freshman
RT    Freshman
QB    Freshman
P      Walk-on Freshman

RDE    Freshman
NT    Freshman
LDE    Freshman
WLB    Freshman
MLB    Freshman
RLB    Freshman
FS     Walk-on Freshman
SS    Freshman
LCB    Freshman

Actual, non-snarky prediction (though yes, many of these guys will get hurt with the way it's ben going). Departure assumptions included.

QB Mills (KJ declares/moves on)
RB Jones (Speights and/or Maddox move on, otherwise they rotate in some capacity)
TE Fisk (Parkinson declares)
WR Wedington, Wilson, Fehoko
OL left to right in most doom-and-gloom scenario: Sarell - Miller - Dalman - Hornibrook - Rouse (I don't think Sarell has NFL prospects just yet, but the 3 seniors all move on)
OL left to right in least doom-and-gloom scenario (Little still declares): Sarell - Hamilton/Hattis - Dalman - Powell - Hamilton/Hattis

DL Booker, Williams, Swann (Williams, Swann, and rotational piece Schaffer could all move on, and recruiting them back should be priority #1. Hell, #0.)
OLB J Fox, Reid (A. Fox and Herron in on plenty of passing downs)
ILB Robinson, JMF (I would recruit Robinson back and assume Pryts moves on)
CB Kelly, Bonner/Manley (Adebo declares and Eboh moves on)
S Williamson, Head (Antoine moves on, though as a captain I'm not so sure)
NB McGill

K Karty (Toner hurt his kicking leg...that might be it for his career)
P Sanborn

Interesting analysis. As we don't have that many scholarships to give, I assume several of the Freshman will be playing both ways. . . .

nice post Sam.

a slightly different take.  [note:  we have 0 DL on current roster eligible to play in '22 and '23.  further roster/recruiting negligence.]

QB Mills (KJ declares/portals on?)
RB Jones (Peat, Maddox; Speights moves on)
TE Fisk (Parkinson declares)
WR Humphreys, Wilson, Fehoko (Wedington, St. Brown slot guys)
OL left to right in most doom-and-gloom scenario: Rouse - Miller - Dalman - Hornibrook - Sarell (the other 3 seniors move on)
OL left to right in least doom-and-gloom scenario (Little still declares): Rouse - Bragg - Dalman - Hattis - Sarell

DL Booker, Williams, Swann (DWP, Pakola)
OLB J Fox, Reid (Umerah, A. Fox)
ILB Pryts, JMF (Robinson moves on)
CB Kelly, Manley
S Williamson, Head (if we sign a true scholarship S in this class, look to be starter by year's end)
NB McGill

K Karty (Toner hurt his kicking leg...that might be it for his career)
P Sanborn

Not that it's much better, but Pakola is eligible in both '22 and '23. He preserved his shirt. Maybe Andres Fox is switching back to DL. Who knows. Regardless we're still so screwed.

Whoops, I totally forgot about Bragg. He looked good in his limited action before injury. He'll start somewhere if seniors leave.

Yeah what was the logic in moving A. Fix to OLB. Did we really think we had a deep set of DE’s in the pipeline?

Fox weighed 240ish when he got here, and showed great talent rushing the passer. Not a stretch to imagine him only putting 10-15ish lbs on instead of 50.

Funny you imagine the coaches think about "pipelines." That explains why we were deep at OL, ILB, and DB this year, right? We will see the same thing at DL in 2 years, and OLB in 3.

RE: 2020 Starters -- predictions please! - SF_Cardinal_Fan - 11-24-2019

Well, I watched Josh  Pakola for 4 years playing defensive line for St. Francis High School and I was hoping to see him on the field for Stanford this season, his true freshman year,  , at least for a game or two.  But, as far as I know he did not play a single down this season.
Is there any difference (to future eligibility) between a player who appeared in 4 games or less versus a player who played in zero games? Both scenarios are a defined as a "redshirt year", correct ?

Played last week against the Cougs and had a tackle.

I sure hope Costello can be persuaded to stay, because (as I've said before), I think the chances of Mills making through the season uninjured are pretty slim. Unfortunately (and with all due respect to them) I don't see any of the backups being the answer. McKee will eventually be. At least I hope he will.

I don't know whether KJ stays or not, but if he does there should be an open competition for the job in spring camp and in August. Mills isn't all that - he threw 2 INTs in each of his last two starts and all were bad decisions/bad reads where he was locked onto a receiver for too long. Not that KJ is any better at not locking onto a receiver, and his favorite target is all but certain to leave early.

If KJ still aspires to play in the NFL he would almost certainly come back. But he's been pretty banged up the last two years and I have to wonder about his durability too and whether those injuries have taken a toll on his playing ability.

I think you will get what you wish because I doubt Costello would come back unless he is assured he will have a fair chance to win his starting job back.

RE: 2020 Starters -- predictions please! - Phogge - 11-25-2019

Until this team re-establishes the run and toughens up on defense it doesn't matter who the QB is.

I am sure Shaw would tell you that everybody always has a "fair" chance to compete for a starting position. What that exactly means may be in the eye of the beholder. It is always going to be somewhat of a judgement call and certainly not totally objective.

I think KJ is in a bad spot right now. He probably wants to go into the draft, but since he was hurt, didn't play much this year, and didn't play great when he did, his draft stock is down from where it was even last year. I think he has to either come back or grad transfer. Either action has significant risks. KJ absolutely needs to play in 2020. The grad transfer route is possible only if he goes someplace he has a good ("fair") chance to play. May be hard to find such a place.

Mills probably also needs to play in 2020 for his own career reasons. Mills could survive not playing in 2020 and play in 2021, but the omniscient fan board assumption is that McKee will be ready then and take the job. It could be a bit of a log jam, with too many QBs. This assumes West has no chance to contribute, which may also be wrong.

RE: 2020 Starters -- predictions please! - Phogge - 11-25-2019

McKee may not be ready but Butter II will be.

KJ should grad transfer to Wazzu. He'll throw for 4,000 and 40 td's with that protection and those receivers. They may go 6-6 however.

RE: 2020 Starters -- predictions please! - BobK - 11-25-2019

Sac state went 9-3 this season after 2-8 the year before. The difference being head coach Troy Taylor. The former Folsom coach cal quarterback and current offensive genius.

Hard to go from head coach to Offensive coordinator but this is what’s needed for 2020

RE: 2020 Starters -- predictions please! - Phogge - 11-25-2019

Taylor developed the all time USA HS record setter Jake Browning as Folsom's OC five years ago. I second Bobbbbbbb's recommendation. And Shaw would table it out of hand. Firing Tavita would be a loss of face for Coach. More important than winning.
