WBB: Senior Day Celebration -
81alum - 02-09-2020
I thought I would do a separate thread for this apart from the game, since TV would not have covered it, it was touching, and some very useful information about the future was revealed.
First, for those who saw the game, you know that Fingall, Wilson, and Brewer each got subbed out in the last few minutes to standing ovations and oodles of warmth and applause. After the game, each of them and Carrington were introduced by another player. Maya Dodson got double duty and introduced both Alyssa Brewer and Nadia Fingall.
I remember from previously that Dodson was one of the players providing Brewer with support during her darkest days. Brewer's family did not travel for the event, but Bri Roberson and her family were there to support Brewer. Brewer, we learned, has just completed a novel, and is planning to take a year off to spend time with family.
Dodson played together with Fingall in high school, so this marks the end of a 7 year odyssey for them. Dodson was very well spoken and clearly cared deeply about both of the players she introduced. Fingall teared up when she talked about the road back from her injury, and noted how pleased she was that senior day was against USC, the game in which she was injured a year ago. She would like to keep playing for a while and then is looking at school for a physician's assistant degree.
Williams introduced Carrington, and as with Dodson, there was a lot of "big sister" talk. These kids really love each other. Tara told the crowd that they were hopeful to get Carrington back this year and that she is getting closer by the day. Carrington had a lot of family present. There was no hint at all that she might have another year of eligibility. If so, they are concealing it well.
Jerome introduced Anna Wilson, reading a lovely speech from her Ipad--that Wilson recommended she get. Tara told the crowd that she wanted Anna to have this moment, but they were still hoping to get her back for next year and that "her best days are ahead." From this we know that the appeal has still not been decided, and it really could go either way, but if it comes through she will be here at Stanford next year. Anna's mother and brother (Russell Wilson) were both present and spoke, and Russell gave a well structured speech in her honor, reminiscing about watching out his suburban window when they were young as their now departed father taught Anna reverse layups in the driveway.
So, in addition to the heartwarming stories and the bittersweet event, we did learn some interesting things. Wilson might be back but it really is in the NCAA's hands, but there is no hint of this for Carrington. Tara is still publicly stating that Carrington is getting closer to playing.
There were more than a few moist eyes in the crowd today. The community of fans adopts these players from a distance and becomes emotionally attached to them, and as I noted, these senior days seem to come too often and too soon.

Thanks so much for capturing what sounds like a moving senior day for some truly outstanding players and young women! I'm sorry to have missed it but very glad to have this recap.

I wonder if they are waiting for decision on Anna Wilson to determine whether DiJonai will redshirt this year and return next year.. I know they say they are hoping to get her back this year, but the selfish part of me would like her to finish off her college career with a full senior season.. of course injuries permitting..

Maybe I missed this post but Dodson will be back this week. She started practicing this week.
Great summary of an awesome day 81. Thank you

My 25th and possibly the saddest one for reasons I should probably hire someone to figure out. So much potential in that group. They've all been so inspirational. I wish them all nothing but the best.

Thanks for that good news! It's the first I've heard of it. Not mentioned at today's postgame.
Any word on Di? Tara only said that Di is working very hard to strengthen her leg to be able to come back.

How is Haley Jones looking? Using crutches? Walking with a limp?
Any additional game we get from her this year will be a bonus as I thought she was gone for the year after watching her injury. Getting her, Dodson, and Carrington back would give us a chance to compete against the Quackers and other elites this year.

She was back, walking with a stiff leg brace, helping the team warm up. I'm interpreting the limited information we have about her as "good" news in the sense that she could be back in form by next season, unlike the most serious ACL tears, but I hardly expect to see her this year. But who knows, perhaps the brace is mostly precautionary and she is getting over a minor scoping for something much less than an ACL. We just don't know for sure.
The Dodson information is very surprising to me, but welcome. At this late date, Dodson's greatest impact could be on defense. Dodson could contribute to defending Ruthy Hebard, for example.

It was tweeted out yesterday. I tried to post the tweet but got distracted and it went by my feed.

Wow, all of the optimistic or somewhat optimistic news about our 3 injured players? Is this too good to be true? Is it too much to start wondering whether we could potentially have all of them back and a full playing roster by the first round NCAA tournament games the weekend of March 20-21? That's about 5 1/2 weeks from today (Mon., Feb. 11).
I wouldn't believe these words a week or two ago, but it sounds like Haley would be the last of the 3 players (Dodson, Carrington, Jones) who could come back?

Oops, actually Tara said that at the postgame press conference available on YouTube.
(FWIW, when I said "postgame" above, I meant the Senior Night talk to the fans. I hadn't listened to the press conference yet.)

Out season tix are corner end zone very near the Stanford bench.
When you see Dodson in her street clothes at games, she moves well and looks to be in great shape. I'm not shocked (at all) that she could very well suit up for the Utah/Colorado games.
The same generally holds for Carrington, though sometimes I think I see a slight hitch in her giddyup. [But again, this is of no medical value]. I'd be mildly surprised if Carrington played this season - but maybe her ultimate decision is tied to the ability to come back next year (as others have mentioned). At the same time, I wouldn't be shocked if Carrington played in a game or 3 before the NCAAs, but it's hard to see her being all the way "back" in that scenario.
But Jones? She is wearing a large brace that immobilizes her knee (keeps it straight). I'm no doctor, but I'd be absolutely shocked if she played this season. I'm just hoping for a full recovery (from whatever the injury was/is) and back in form at some point next season.

I must have missed this somewhere, but if Sunday was Senior Day, will there be no recognition of the seniors at the final regular season home game on Monday, Feb. 24 versus Oregon? It would be nice to have some ceremony, especially given that the game will be televised on ESPN2.

Sr day is over. Monday late just didn’t seem to work for Tara. She talked about it. Hard to have an hour plus ceremony late on a week night

I assume they said something like:
"And in yet another example of how television and the PAC-12 Conference have really screwed things up when it comes to scheduling, they won't be holding Senior Day on the night of their last home game because we've arranged for that game to be played late on Monday night, which is bad for students, fans, and family, but great for ESPN."
Not.
RE: WBB: Senior Day Celebration -
Papa John - 02-10-2020
I get that the official Senior Day should accommodate the players' families, but for those of us who cannot attend, it would be great to see some kind of recognition before the actual final game of the regular season. Given that the game is versus Oregon on a Monday at 6 pm (still primetime on the East Coast!) on ESPN2--as opposed to the Pac-12 network--a whole lot of women's basketball fans will want and be able to watch. I would be fine with something as simple as a paragraph-long introduction with words of thanks for each senior before the starting lineups are introduced. It would only delay the tip-off by a few minutes, and I bet the players' families, watching from afar, would approve!
However, if this request is not feasible, then I would settle for a win over the Ducks.

So much so that Russell Wilson made it in time for an Oscars bash in LA!
