.....playing UDFG every year, you have a friend in South Bend.

ND fans always used to enjoy the notion that playing Stanford was, well just a little beneath them.
After last year they perhaps think they can start feeling that way again.

I didn't think the writing was THAT bad. Then again, I'll have to admit I don't read articles like that to assess the quality of the writing.

Read the last poster in the comments section (there's just six comments). He postulates all the reasons that the rivalry should stay in place and made 10x more sense than the writer of the article.

I have a near mint copy of issue 2 with the picture of golf clubs on the cover and the Yankee cards inside. It's a really trip back in time to read it. I would probably describe it as being for a more patrician audience.

What an opportunity I missed by being totally unaware of Stanford sports while I was on campus as a grad student from 1981-87! Most grad students were pretty unaware of undergrad campus life, I think.

(I did go to the football game against USC in 1986, only because a friend who was in Stanford law school at the time organized an outing.)

Not only did Stanford get shutout in that game, I don't think we ever even got in the red zone.
It almost seemed like Elway's strategy in that one was, "Well, we know we aren't going to win this game, so let's at least try to keep it close."

You are correct. I think our deepest penetration was about the 25 yard line, early on. It was a completed pass, and the receiver coughed up the ball when tackled. And that was it. The Band had a pre-game show that was filled with hubris. The announcer said, "Stanford is ranked" (yes, true and rare for that era) "while USC is rank." A forgettable day all around.

I remember that Band show because it made an impression on me as a freshman attending on one of my first games. It was funny because it was so obnoxious and beyond the bounds of good taste.

There was a formation of the USC helmet, then the head collapsed in as the Band played, "If I Only Had A Brain".
"Stanford is ranked. USC is naturally rank."
"Stanford has Nobels. USC has no balls." I think the Band formed a penis at this point. (By the time the story of the Band's suspension hit the New York Times, it had changed to the announcer shouting, "Balls! Balls! Balls!")

IIRC, in a practice the week after that game the defense and offense came to blows. Defense quite frustrated as they played well including a couple of goal-line stands.
