WBB: Stanford 68 vs UC Davis 42 - 81alum - 12-13-2021

Preview:

We have a rich history of playing UC Davis.  Two years ago we played them in late December for a 67-55 win in which a pre-injury Haley Jones scored 21 points.  The prior year we opened with UC Davis.  Alanna Smith and Lexie led the way, and then we caught them in the first round of the NCAAs, and Smith and Carrington finished them off.  We tend to play them quite a bit partly because it is a convenient matchup for the NCAA committee to make in the first round, and partly because Tara has developed a warm relationship with the coaches at Davis.  Coaches Gross and Teramoto are experts at the Princeton, and they actually came to Stanford a few years ago to help Tara learn how to incorporate elements of the Princeton offense.

This year UC Davis is off to a 4-3 start.  Their best win by far was their defeat of Oregon in Eugene by the score of 64-57.  On the other hand, USF pasted them, and on Saturday Washington State crushed them 71-49.  So this is a team that can beat good teams and lose to good teams.

As a team Davis is hitting 34% of its treys, which is quite high, and making 8 of them a game.  That is a veritable barrage of three point attempts.  Cierra Hall, a 6'0" senior forward, leads them in scoring at 12 ppg, and in three point shooting at 37%.  Their second leading scorer is a 5'9" sophomore guard Evanne Turner who is shooting 31% from three point range.  These two take about half their shots from downtown, so they are scoring from inside also.  A 6'3" senior seems to be the only tallish starter.  There are only 7 players averaging in double digit minutes.  Davis has been out rebounded by its competition so far this year, and has more turnovers than its competition--so those could be weaknesses.

Davis is one of those "system teams" which we Stanford fans should love to watch, given that it is as much about the plays and the system as it is about individual stars and talent.  They are reasonably successful and always seem to give us a good game.  Last time we played them I remember one of our players (I think it was Williams) commenting that "they knew our plays better than we did."  So it will be an interesting challenge.  I expect our pure size and talent to overwhelm them, but it would be nice if our system worked as well as their system, too.  We will find out soon enough.

Thanks. Great preview. I'm looking forward to the game.

I've always wonders why a 3 point shot is called "from downtown."  It seems like "downtown" is the center of a city so that should refer to shots close to the bucket.  Here is a nice history of the term:

RE: WBB: Stanford vs UC Davis Wed 7pm - crackpot - 12-13-2021

Will there be fans allowed to attend now that events of >1000 people in California will require attendees to provide proof of a negative COVD-19 test in the last 48 hours?

Er...nevermind...shouldn't believe what I read from KTVU. Sounds like Stanford's policy unchanged (per SF Chron):

The state will require people attending mega-events attended by 1,000 or more that don’t require COVID-19 vaccination to show proof of a negative test taken within one day for an antigen test, and within two days for a PCR test. Previously, the window was 72 hours.

My prediction - same as what I conjectured vs Pacific, i.e.  lead up to as much as 25+ and final point differential depends on how much Tara plays her reserves.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs UC Davis Wed 7pm - 81alum - 12-13-2021

UC Davis just defeated Stanislaus State 84-55.  They were 8/21 from three point range--exactly their average.  Four players scored in double digits and all about evenly.  13 players played and 12 scored.  It was a good night for Davis.  Despite all that, they still had more turnovers and fewer O-boards than Stanislaus.  I predict a big night for steals and rebounds for us.

From your analysis (thank you as always), we will have a size advantage over them. Hopefully, we won't just rest on our physical edge and remember to box out and do the correct things to rebound. We'll need good practice in ahead of our brutal road trip.

Mistakes that we can probably get away with against Davis will surely won't be against Tennessee or South Carolina. It will definitely be a couple steps up in terms of competition on the road trip.

Best case scenario is jump ahead to a large lead, rest and protect our starters and key bench players from injuries and give our frosh some more playing time. I imagine that both away games will be close contests so Tara will probably shorten the rotation a little bit then.

thanks for linking! some of the highlights of the article for me are that one of the arenas that started the use of "from downtown" was madison square garden, which is located in mid-town manhattan. as you point out, in most cities, the city center is downtown, but in manhattan it's mid-town. in msg, a shot from downtown would be from 20 to 30 blocks away. also that earlier the term was used to celebrate long-distance shots by "downtown" freddie brown, whose nickname references his high school in downtown milwaukee.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs UC Davis Wed 7pm - oldalum - 12-13-2021

interesting. Anyone know the derivation of the basketball term "boxing out"??

RE: WBB: Stanford vs UC Davis Wed 7pm - 81alum - 12-15-2021

The same players warmed up as last game.  Jana and Brown here in street clothes. Harriel warned up normally.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs UC Davis Wed 7pm - 81alum - 12-15-2021

Just noticed a sure fire way to tell Lexie and Lacie apart before they take off their warm ups so we can see their numbers.  Lacie wears black shoes and Lexie wears white.

thx for any and all commentary tonight. Will watch on livestream rather than in person due to recent foot surgery keeping me in tonight!

RE: WBB: Stanford vs UC Davis Wed 7pm - 81alum - 12-15-2021

Davis making lots of treys in practice.  Clearly something they are good at.  Let's hope perimeter defense makes a difference.

Is the stream being weird for anyone else with ads?

Yes.

yes! lost it completely when exited full screen.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs UC Davis Wed 7pm - Lorcan - 12-15-2021

Yeah, I hit the go live button, and now I'm back at Stanford leading 3-0. Sigh. What is this production and why am I so disappointed?

RE: WBB: Stanford vs UC Davis Wed 7pm - martyup - 12-15-2021

We lead 16-11 after the 1st period.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs UC Davis Wed 7pm - Softball Fan - 12-15-2021

Haley hasn't regained the consistency of last year.  Sometimes very good.  Sometimes not so good.

Yes this video is really annoying.  I can't exit full screen without getting a commercial and going back in time in the game.
