The guy wants to win a Super Bowl, like his brother.

This probably is the best time to jump from Michigan.

I am not sure the Vikings are the right NFL franchise but if he were to win their first trophy he'd get the love and adoration he likely craves.

RE: Harballs - BobK - 01-30-2022

The new Viking GM has both a 49er connection and Stanford connection.

RE: Harballs - winflop - 01-30-2022

I think he'd be crazy to go to the Vikings, but Harbaugh has always been a little bit crazy.

I think he's crazy enough to accept an offer and good enough to do well.

This I totally agree with. If he leaves Michigan, willingly or otherwise, he isn't coming back. He will burn that bridge forever. If he leaves now to go to the NFL it at least can be viewed as a "promotion" rather than a defection. He had a great year in 2021. 2022 most probably will be a reversion to the mean, and while not chopped liver that isn't a B1G championship and a chance at the National Championship. That might be come a bit unpleasant. If he doesn't intend to finish his career at Michigan, leave now.

I think he prefers the situations where there is at least a little a bit of upside available, so that the winning can be attributed to him.  Green Bay is on the verge of a salary cap driven rebuild once Rodgers leaves, and the other two franchises in that division have so many problems.

Can't help but wonder if one of the higher profile free agent QBs might be willing to move to Harbaugh.

Goose, your continual effort to piss on Harbaugh's accomplishments is remarkable.
A "reversion to the mean" of 10 win seasons and a NY6 bowl game.  What a crappy coach, right?

"Willingly or otherwise?"  "Burn that bridge forever?"

C'mon, man.  That's ridiculous.

P.S.  I do agree that it's an optimal time to try NFL again, if that's what he wants to do, because his stock has never been higher.  And yes, it's going to be hard to return to CFP.  But so what?  It's hard for everyone.

RE: Harballs - jonnyss - 01-30-2022

just a guess, but thinking he wants to stay and is angling for a higher salary.

(p.s. random insight: i always assumed "angling for" came from approaching at an angle, ie indirectly. just realized it's a synonym for "fishing for" - in both the literal and figurative meanings.  just looked it up and confirmed the etymology. took me long enough!

The questions surrounding JH do not have to do with his coaching ability.  They have to do with his “staying power” for lack of a better way to put it.  He was not going to last at Stanford.  He burned his way out of SF.  So it’s a legitimate question as to whether he’s reached the end of his effective coaching life at Michigan.

Plus, there are a slew of NFL jobs available.  And if I’m looking to turn a team around, he’s high on my list.  As long as I have a strong OC or DC that can replace him if he wears out his welcome in 3or 4 years.

Teejers1, you insist on interpreting my comments as pissing on what JH has accomplished. Not my intention. JH is a good coach. However, I differ from you interpretation as to how good. According https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Michigan_Wolverines_head_football_coaches JH is 61-24 overall and 42-17 in conference. His 0.712 winning percentage would translate to 8.5 wins per season, but this number is greatly influenced by 2020. He has won 10+ games 4 times. In the other three years he won 8, 9, and 2. Scale the 2 to a full year, you get 4. So the "mean" season is somewhat below the 10 wins per year level, even if you ignore 2020. Is this a real good record? For sure it is. The problem is that during those 7 years JH has won 1 conference championship. The Michigan folks want a Bo, who won 13 in 21 years, or even a Lloyd Carr who won 5 in 13 years. One conference championship in 7 years won't do it for them. Losing to tOSU five straight times has never happened before, probably because they fired the coach before it could. One may argue those expectations are unrealistic, but tOSU coaches have done just about that well over the last 10 or more years. So is JH a "crappy coach"? IMHO, no, I think he is a pretty good coach. If he stays at Michigan and keeps winning 10+ games essentially every year along with a "bunch" of conference championships he can transition into being a "great" coach. However, he isn't there yet, and it is unclear how much slack he will get to accomplish that transition if he has an "off" year. It may not be fair, but that is the situation he is in.

I think it is simply true. If JH were to leave for another P5 job, like Kelly did going to LSU, I think even you would agree that there would be lots of bad blood. The fact he was an alum would become a net negative. As far as we know, JH isn't going to do that. If he goes to the NFL, it would be lots easier for the UM fans to swallow. They may feel a bit let down, but it is understandable. However, if JH goes to the NFL and is successful, he will most probably stay in the NFL. If he isn't successful in the NFL, he will be gone a minimum of three years. Do you honestly believe that in 4 years the UM brain trust would hire back a guy who won one conference championship in 7 years, left the school, and then bombed out in the NFL? I sure don't, and this is ignoring any issues about his personality.

Why crazy? within NFL circles the Vikings job is generally considered the best opportunity of the ones that came open this offseason.

Plus Zimmer set  low bar….  How he lasted that long is beyond me.

Exactly. Stable, extremely patient ownership that has been willing to invest money in the organization.

Solid roster with a competent, veteran quarterback. No GM at moment so they will hire someone compatible with the head coach. Winnable division (very winnable if Rodgers moves on). Cap situation is tight but otherwise it's a very good situation.

Harbaugh may just be leveraging interest to secure a mega-extension from Michigan, but if he wants to go back to the NFL he can win right away in Minnesota instead of suffering through years of rebuilding somewhere.

I had hoped Harballs would have become DA Bears new head coach.

Multiple reports tonight that Harbaugh is likely signing an agreement with the Vikings tomorrow.

There are other reports now saying that JH has not yet decided. I would assume that since he is "interviewing" tomorrow the job hasn't yet been formally offered. It will be interesting to see what happens. If it is actually offered, IMHO he should take it. It is a good opportunity to avoid a total rebuild situation. We shall see.
