Men's BB: Stanford 53 -- Colorado 70 :•( - Papa John - 02-18-2022

Prior to Thursday's game vs Utah, Stanford was treading water with 7 wins in 13 games since the resumption of play after January 1. But after the loss to Utah, many (most?) readers of this board presume that the ship is sinking and no amount of bailing water will keep it afloat. That theory will be tested on Saturday when the Cardinal take on the Buffalo at Maples. This will be the final home game for those players who will be ending their Stanford careers at the conclusion of the season--unless Stanford somehow makes the NIT and is assigned a home game.

Since losing 5 out of 6 in late January, Colorado has gone on a four-game win streak versus Oregon State (2x), Utah and Cal. The Buffs are 17-9 (9-7) and are sitting alone in sixth place and still have an outside shot at earning a first-round bye in the conference tournament. Besides Saturday's game at Stanford, CU has home games versus the Arizona schools and an away game against Utah, so a 3-1 finish is certainly feasible. (Oregon inexplicably lost to ASU and has a tough finishing schedule.) But unless there are multiple upsets in the conference tournament, the Pac-12 will have three teams in the NCAA tournament and, in my opinion which doesn't count, Oregon, Colorado, and maybe WSU will be slotted for the NIT.

At this moment, Stanford 15-11 (8-8) is in a virtual tie for 7th with fading-fast WSU. After Colorado, Stanford finishes at Cal and then the Arizona schools, so I'd like to say that a 10-10 conference record is likely, but it doesn't feel that way after the manner in which the Cardinal folded down the stretch versus a Quad 3 opponent. And Colorado will be a much tougher opponent than Utah. The Buffaloes are 1st in conference play in 3-pt FG %, 2nd in FT % and 4th in rebounding margin. On the bright side for Stanford, CU is 11th in turnovers committed (Stanford is 12th) and 8th in turnovers forced (Stanford is 10th). So Stanford has a chance if it gets an emotional bump from senior/underclassmen-leaving night and avoids the dreaded passes-to-nobody.

Stanford lost 76-80 at Colorado back in late November, but it's really difficult to project those results onto Saturday's contest. Having said, the first meeting between the teams was, non-clinically speaking, schizophrenic. Stanford jumped out to an 11-point lead in the first half, Colorado led by 5 at halftime, then Stanford took a lead, then Colorado, then Stanford, then Colorado pulled away at the end. Sr Forward Evan Battey led CU with 22 in that first game, although the Buffs top scorer in conference play is So Forward Jabari Walker (15.9 ppg). Jabari is the son of former NBA player Samaki Walker and was on the Pac-12 all-freshman team last season. Tristan da Silva, brother of Oscar, also starts for the Buffs.

Having written the above, I note that ESPN's BPI, for some unexplained reason, gives Stanford a 71.2% probability of winning. So forget what I said and let's Beat the Buffaloes--which are really bison!

Always appreciate your great info PJ, but after last night I'm done caring about MBB until there's a new HC.

I care, but I just won't spend too much time watching and will not be in the stands until Haase is not in the house.

I hope Stanford ends this season winning at least 11 games in a row, but I know that won't really happen.

Haase seems like a great recruiter, and the TV guys praise him endlessly after their pre-game interviews.   I can only guess that Haase is able to talk about the game in ways that must captivate people.

From an outside perspective it feels like Obi Wan Kenobi's skills are nothing compared to Haase's abilities.

You don't need to see my credentials.
I am not the coach you need to fire.
I can stay and lose some more.
Move along.

Agree but that’s a separate thread. Been advocating for that but falling on deaf ears

RE: Men's BB: Stanford vs Colorado, 7 pm Saturday, ESPNU - BostonCard - 02-19-2022

Even if Muir could be magically hypnotized into firing underperforming coaches, I have no confidence that he would be able to hire good replacements.  I know he has made some good hires in other sports, but I don’t believe there is much translatability between even hiring a good baseball coach and hiring coaches in the two highest profile sports in the NCAA.

If Muir is replaced, it makes other personnel changes more likely, and it gives me more confidence that those transitions will be handled better.

BC, I think you are assuming the replacement for Muir would be an improvement. Unfortunately that isn't a given. As hard as it may be to determine if a coaching prospect would be a "good" hire, I think replacing an AD is even more difficult to predict. Oftentimes a "fit" issue can't be detected in advance, and the "good administrator, good fund raiser, bad personnel selector" is often hired. The "bad" hires take years to accumulate and are hard to blame totally on the AD, so the AD lingers much longer than a coach with a poor record will.

RE: Men's BB: Stanford vs Colorado, 7 pm Saturday, ESPNU - BostonCard - 02-19-2022

I agree Goose, and I am not certain I have confidence in the person making the AD hire.  But I think as has been stated multiple times here, there is sufficient cause to fire Muir, including several scandals that have brought disrepute to the Stanford athletics department.  The varsity blues scandal occurred under his watch, and depending on who believe, with his encouragement. Stanford was slapped with major NCAA violations for the first time ever. Then there is the financial mismanagement, the decision to drop sports, the about face on that. Muir’s unwillingness to fire coaches is actually pretty low on my list of complaints, but, having lost my confidence as an athletic director, the last thing I want to do is have him saddle the next person with a bad hire.

Totally agree there are reasons to replace Muir. He has failed as an administrator of his department, and this would be so even if Shaw was 12-0 and Men's Basketball in first place. The attempt to drop sports in the ham-handed way he did was by itself an adequate justification to replace him. I wouldn't necessarily fire the AD because of misconduct by his employees, but I certainly would if said AD couldn't demonstrate due diligence in oversight of these employees. The current AD was clearly AWOL in these matters, another reason he should go.
Unfortunately, since he is still here, it seems that the Powers that Be have either no interest in replacing him and/or have failed to find what they consider a good alternative. I can see slow-walking his dismissal until you have a good replacement, but so much time has elapsed it seems unlikely they are looking.

RE: Men's BB: Stanford vs Colorado, 7 pm Saturday, ESPNU - PVTree - 02-19-2022

Being a masochist for Stanford sports, I'm following the game. We lead 31-29 at the half. We had a 9 point lead at one point, but we are turning it over too much. A lot of the seniors, maybe all, started the game on senior night

RE: Men's BB: Stanford vs Colorado, 7 pm Saturday, ESPNU - martyup - 02-19-2022

Stanford's seniors give the team a great start of the game, going 9-0.  We took a lead into the locker room at the half, and we have stretched that to 4 points early in the 2nd.

Ingram and Jones need to get going.  Each with only 2 points.

It's a 1 point game with 11:31 to play.  We are in this.

And . . . at 8:55 we trail by 5 and are playing like crap.

Not much of a turnout on the Cardboard for this game.

Sorry, been too busy pacing in front of the TV. Painful to watch.

This game seems to be mirroring a typical Hasse season.  Started out strong and faded in the end.

Too many overpasses and late-shotclock prayers...

Maybe we should've given the seniors more minutes...

Yeah, we've lost our offensive mojo completely.  Ingram is lost.

I'd get Murrell into the game and pull Delaire.  We need to hit some 3s.

I say turn Raynaud loose. Can't be worse than what we're doing.

This is just sad.
