WBB: Stanford 66 -- Oregon 62 - 81alum - 02-19-2022

Preview:

You remember the last game, right?  Oregon had just barely gotten its leading three players back from injury before we played them.  It was a little like a February team going up against a November team.  Even so, they gave us a fight except that Lexie dropped a career high 33 points on them.

https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=22813&pid=340286&highlight=WBB%3A+Stanford+80#pid340286

Since that game Oregon has had its ups and downs, but it is hanging on to 2nd place in the Pac 12, 1/2 a game ahead of Arizona and 1 game ahead of WSU.  If we beat them we might drop them to 4th place and set up yet another game against them in the Pac 12 tournament.

Oregon is now 18-8, 10-4 in conference, 26th in AP and 29th in coaches, 15th in Massey, and 10th in Net.  The disparate rankings indicate some disparate performances.  They barely edged Cal last night and lost to Oregon State the game before that.  On the other hand, they walloped Washington State 83-30 which the NET probably enjoyed.

I won't repeat the player by player breakdowns you can find in the earlier thread.  However it is notable that last night against a surprisingly scrappy and defensive Cal Oregon was led by Rogers and Prince with Sabally receding into the background with 4 points, Paopao with 7, Scherr with 1, Parrish with 0.  This despite the fact that those five were all on the floor for significant minutes.  Also watch for 6'8" Kyei coming off the bench.  She had 8 points in 9 minutes.  Hurst off the bench is their leading three point shooter at 39%.  10 players average at least 10 minutes.  In short, Oregon is deeper than it was last time we played them, but it seems it can be up and down in performance.  My guess is we will get their best game and not a down game, and that their lackluster performance against Cal may have been do to players looking past Cal to us.  But like all good teams, they found a way to win last night despite not being at their best.

One has to believe that Oregon will make a special effort against Lexie after she torched them.  We can expect to see plenty of zone until we start hitting treys, and the corner trey is the easiest to make against Oregon's typical zone.  I wonder if Graves will try out some new defensive wrinkle to keep Jump and the Hulls from bombing from the corner.

Agree with all said in the writeup. It's hard to know what Oregon team will show up on Sunday as they have been up and down. They certainly have the star power to beat us and I would expect them to play well in front of a big crowd on national tv. Sabally was really good the last time we played them (i thought outplayed Brink). Rogers was also really good in the first meeting. We need our best players to step up and play well and to limit turnovers. If we get the win, I like our chances to finish undefeated in conference with next weekends opponents at home. Can't believe the regular season is winding down so quickly. Our team has grown so much this season and I'm going to miss watching them when the season ends.

Well 81 come to Vegas. :)

Oregon has sure been up and down. Last night strangely down. Sabally may be still having knee problems.

Pretty disheartening post press conf from Graves. Not a great confidence builder for his team.

I'm really nervous about this game -- it's not only Oregon that has been up and down. So have Stanford players. Fortunately, when one or two have an off night, someone else is available to step up, so we survive. But Lexie is the one who concerns me for Sunday. She had a fantastic game against Oregon the 1st time, then a great game vs OSU last night. Can she keep going? So often, she follows a really good game with one where her shot simply won't go in. Her defense and aggressiveness is always there, but offense, that's often hot or cold. I hope she can be hot two games in a row (OSU and Oregon) and twice against the same team (Oregon).

What I have noticed over the years since Chiney's unbalanced teams is that the player who scores the most to win a game against a good team is almost never the player who scores the most the second time around.  I would be surprised if Lexie has a great offensive night and not at all surprised if someone else came on strong.  Brink had only 5 against the Oregon zone, maybe tomorrow we will see Demetre or JVG as zone busters.  Sticking Jump in one corner, JVG in another, and Demetre in the soft spot at the elbow could pose problems for the zone.

Graves postgamer ugh... he was very irritable, you would never know his team actually won the game. Reminds me of Geno after a loss. Although he doesn't throw any individual player under this bus, he still is very negative about his team. While many coaches will give credit to the opposition, Graves does it very little and it feels obligatory when he does not just in this game but always. Coaching aside, he's my least favorite Pac12 women's basketball coach. He has this arrogance and mannerism that rubs me the wrong way.

It would be nice if Lexie could build off OSU and have another solid game. When she plays well individually (first half at SC case in point), our team is better. I agree she usually follows a great game with a stinker. I'm confident we can beat the Ducks. Any fans going to be in attendance for this road game? I strongly considered going but last minute had a commitment. Cheer loud if so! Go Card!

In answer to the "any fans going" question. Yes, we'll be there, myself and my husband. We were at the OSU game last night, didn't see any Stanford fans we recognized, but there were a few spots of Cardinal clothing here and there in the stands. Good OSU fan turnout by the time the game began. We almost always go to the Oregon / OSU games in Oregon, doing it as a long weekend roadtrip. It's a wonderful one for me since I grew up in Corvallis where my parent were on the faculty. But now, I'm definitely cheering for the Card when they play OSU -- then OSU against anyone else, especially USC.  Tomorrow, will be yelling as loud as we can on behalf of all you who can't make it there.

After I watched the Graves presser after the cal game and our mens team fall apart against Colorado, it occurred to me that what makes Tara's team so great is that they love each other, trust each other, and trust their coaching staff.  They play selfless basketball, so it if one of them has an off night others step up.  They are more likely to make an extra pass than take a tough shot.  The bench is always actively cheering on the team and they seem genuinely happy to see bench players making good plays.  I also sense that Tara trusts her team and her players know it.  Contrast that with what we heard from Graves, or what we regularly hear from Geno.

I'm not sure we can beat South Carolina, and I realize that there are several teams that could potentially beat our team in the NCAA tourney.  I think I'm going to be okay with that.  It has been joyful watching these women play together and while anything less than a National Championship will be disappointing, it will not erase all of the joy they have given me and will not diminish my respect for them.

Nosebleed seats. 26 minutes to game time, not many fans here yet.

Card just came out. Same 15 who were in Corvallis.  Missing, Brown and Harriel. I e., at full strength

I must say, a loss might help our team remember how it feels to lose as preparation for the NCAA tourney.  If you have to lose a game, this is about as perfect a time as they come.  We've already locked up the regular season Pac-12 title and a #1 seed in the tourney.

But let's hope for a win.

OMG, Brink called for a ghost foul.  Total BS. Then Prince falls on top of Fran and no call.

Take it to them Fran!!

Yeah, ugh. Fortunately they called the next two fouls Prince committed.

Is it only YouTubeTV that's showing Temple-Cincinnati men instead of our women's game?
