WBB: Stanford 61 -- Washington State 54 -
81alum - 02-24-2022
Preview:
Tonight we have the very essence of a trap game. We return home from an emotional come-from-behind win against perennial powerhouse Oregon to take on a team that has never beaten us in its entire history.
However, WSU finds itself in second place in the Pac 12--marginally ahead of Oregon and Arizona, and is riding a four game winning streak that just culminated in their 72-67 win over Arizona. WSU is 18-8, 36th by Massey, and 62 in Net (that is quite a disparity!)
WSU used to be all about Charlisse Leger-Walker, with a little help from forward Murekatete, but recently 5'8" junior guard Johanna Teder has been on fire. She scored 21 against Arizona's stingy defense, going 5/7 from three point range. Teder is now WSU's 2nd leading scorer for the season and will need close defense at the three point line, which will take a little pressure off of the Leger-Walker sisters.
I expect us to win, but that is the problem. One of these decades WSU will do something we don't expect, just as they did to Arizona last week.
Ideally Wilson and the two Hulls will shut down Teder and the two Leger-Walkers, leaving Jones and our bigs to take care of Murekatete and Matuga.
Last time we played them was on January 2--a very long time ago. We dominated 82-44 in a game where even their coach melted down. WSU is a much better team today--whether they are good enough to win remains to be seen--but the emergence of offensive balance for them does make them more difficult to defend than in early January.

I'm not posting a preview of the game -- another Cardboarder who is better at that than me will step up, I'm sure. But I do have to say that I'm nervous about tonight's game. WSU has a lot of motivation and is playing well (though best at home). If they beat us and Cal, they could be looking at the #2 seed in the pac-12 tournament AND they have never beaten the Card, the only Pac-12 team of which that is true. Will Stanford have a hangover after that heroic comeback in Oregon?
In Pullman on Jan 2, Stanford demolished WSU -- 82-44. Is that more motivation for the Cougars, or confidence builder for Stanford? Brink did not play in that game, along with others who were left out because of Covid issues. In addition to Cam, Stanford was missing Prechtel, Emma-Noopu, Jerome, Demetre (and Brown/Harriel). Fran started in Cam's place and played 16 minutes. Four players in double digits -- Fran (10), Haley (24 plus 16 rebounds, which earned her Pac-12 POTW), Hannah (10), and Kiki (13 and 8 rebounds in 14 minutes, which gained her Pac-12 Freshman of the week). Stanford shot 45.6% for the game, WSI 31.1%, dominated the boards at 48/34, and had 17 steals vs WSU's 3. If Stanford can repeat this performance, no worries for tonight, but I anticipate a much more competitive game. WSU has a lot to play for in a game that is a lot more important for them than it is for Stanford other than Cardinal pride.

I hope to see this team getting into tourney form in the next two games. Our shooting needs to improve (especially under the basket), we need to keep turnovers down, and Cam needs to stay out of foul trouble so she can log more minutes. Hopefully Kiki's upward trajectory continues and Jana and Ashten can lob in some 3 balls.

Not going to lie, one thing I love about this 7? 8? 9?-headed hydra of a team, is you never know which head or heads will go off on any given night. Truly the complete 180 of our teams in the late Ogwumike years that were largely one (VERY successful) trick ponies. Who's going to step up and rescue us from what is, I agree with 81, a total trap game?

I think we win by a large margin.
I hope Haley goes off in the next two games and never looks back. Although it's great having such depth and having so many players step up, I think it's critical that the team has a true leader who is bringing it every game. Last year, it was Ki. Even though she didn't play that great in the tourney, everyone followed her lead and it was essential she stayed on the court. Haley is the best candidate to lead this team, IMO, and she needs to grab that brass ring. No more average nights from her. She's too good. Her heroics at Oregon might have been a seminal moment for this team/season.

I think we will see a good game from Brink as well. She didn’t play well in the state of Oregon. And that must be eating at her. An angry, but focused, Brink is something no opposing team wants to see.

Agree with you on this.
And agree with Boscard that Brink comes up big tonight.
We'll see soon enough.
Go Cardinal!

Does anyone know where this is being broadcast? I don't see it on any of the PAC12 Networks. Thanks!

Yes, it looks like Lexie and Brown in street clothes.

WSU? I like their team, and they win vs teams that they can match up with,
and that includes Arizona, which is more well known for their defense.
But they simply have a problem with teams with the length, speed and
offensive prowess of Stanford and Oregon.

Lexie seems to be moving fine, but she is not dressed. A game off for good behavior? ?

Took 2:25 for Anna Wilson to let the students/band stop singing “Swingtown.”

Could it just be she's a little banged up and this would be a good weekend to rest up before Pac12 tournament? I hate to speculate but she does look fine. Hopefully Tara will be asked postgame. Was mentioned they are hopeful she will be back Saturday

Our offense looks out of whack.
JVG for 3!
Nice 1st quarter, except for the 4 turnovers. Held the Cougs to 10 points. Starting to get in the flow.

Agreed the offense seems out of sync. Game is being played at WSU pace. If we can pick it up and transition more, I think we can run away with it with our depth.
How much better would Haley Jones be if she had a halfway consistent midrange jump shot. She's been so inconsistent this season at that area of her game (I think more so than last year) and even worse behind the arc. Not having a perimeter game is not going to translate well to the WNBA at her height in particular.

We're killing them on the boards, but 7 turnovers . . .
