WWP: MPSF champions!! Stanford 11 - USC 9 - M T - 04-23-2022

Whichever team loses today between UCLA and Stanford in the MPSF semifinal WWP match may not be invited to the NCAA championships.

Starting now:(12:45 PDT)   https://mpsports.org/watch/?Live=96  but it is paywalled ($7)

RE: WWP: Q1: #2 Stanford 4 - #3 UCLA 1 - M T - 04-23-2022

Stanford was very active in Q1, jumping to a 4-0 lead, before UCLA got a goal with 21 seconds left.
Stanford got & made 2 penalty shots.   In Power Plays, Stanford was 1 of 1, UCLA 0 of 3.

Is the NCAA championship format still ten teams - seven automatic bids and three at-large bids? I don't think any school outside of the MPSF has ever received an at-large bid. 4 schools from the MPSF (the champ and 3 at-large) are likely to get bids.

RE: WWP: MPSF semi Q1 #2 Stanford 4 - #3 UCLA 1 - BostonCard - 04-23-2022

Now 7-5 Stanford in the second period.

BC

RE: WWP: MPSF semi Q2 #2 Stanford 7 - #3 UCLA 5 - M T - 04-23-2022

Second Q:
UCLA again wins the sprint, and scores on the first possession (4-2), and then again on a power play. (4-3)
The teams trade goals. (5-4) and again (6-5).
But then Stanford gets back to a 2 goal lead (7-5)

Stanford is 2 of 3 in power plays;  UCLA 1 of 7
Stanford is 2 of 2 in penalty shots;  UCLA 0 of 0.

Mackenzie Fisher and Ryan Neushul have 2 goals each.  Aria Fischer, Lyons, and Roemer have 1 each.
For UCLA, Ava Johnson got their first 4 goals.

Stanford has one player (Hicks) with 2 exclusions. (One more and she's done for the day)

I presume it is the same as the men's.  Only 3 MPSF teams went to the fall's MWP NCAA championships.  Stanford stayed home.

RE: WWP: MPSF semi Q2 #2 Stanford 7 - #3 UCLA 5 - BobK - 04-23-2022

9-5 Stanford 3rd qtr

RE: WWP: MPSF semi Q2 #2 Stanford 7 - #3 UCLA 5 - M T - 04-23-2022

3rd Quarter.
Maddie Musselman wins her 3rd sprint.
Stanford scores a goal, and then the teams trade goals. (9-6)
UCLA is now getting more power plays (12) but Stanford's defense is keeping them at only 1 goal on 12 powerplay chances.
Stanford is 4 of 5 on power plays (plus 2 of 2 penalty shots).

UCLA's coach has gotten a yellow card and a yellow-red card.
A bit later, Stanford's coach gets a yellow-red card.
Stanford 9-6.

Stanford has 3 players with 2 exclusions. UCLA has one.

RE: WWP: MPSF semi Q3 #2 Stanford 9 - #3 UCLA 6 - BobK - 04-23-2022

11-7 Stanford. 5 minutes to go

12-7 3 minutes left

A Stanford win. 13-7

RE: WWP: MPSF semi Q3 #2 Stanford 9 - #3 UCLA 6 - M T - 04-23-2022

4th Q:  Stanford starts up 3 goals.
Less than a minute in, Stanford goes up 4:  10-6.
A minute later, Stanford gets another (11-6).   A 5-goal advantage with 6 minutes to go in a game with a 35-second shot clock.  It is getting desperate for UCLA.

UCLA gets another goal. (11-7) . Just their 2nd power play goal in 14 chances.   4-goal advantage, 5:14 to play.
Stanford answers that. (12-7).  Stanford now 5 of 6 on power plays.   Stanford will use their full shot clock for the remainder of the game.

Stanford gets an icing-on-the-cake goal with a minute left.  13-7

Stanford wins 13-7.
Ryan Neushul was 3 of 4 on goals.
Mackenzie Fischer was 3 of 7.
Wallace was 2 of 3.
Roemer was 2 of 4.
Lyons, Aria Fischer, and Facey scored 1 each

Stanford's goalie saved 10 of 17 shot attempts.

The MPSF finals are Sunday afternoon.

Last year, USC, Stanford, UCLA, and ASU went to the NCAA tournament as the top 4 seeds.

"Last year" = fall of 2020:  A COVID year. At least one (SCIAC) of the conferences that send their winner to the NCAA tournament did not have a season, so there was an extra at-large bid.

MT - are you talking about Men's Water Polo? "Last year" for WWP was spring, 2021. 10 teams (including the SCIAC champ Cal Lutheran), 3 at large berths. USC, Stanford, UCLA, and ASU went to the NCAA tournament.

2019 - 10 teams, 3 at large berths. USC, Stanford, UCLA and Cal all went to the NCAA tournament.
2018 - 10 teams, 3 at large berths. USC, Stanford, UCLA and Cal all went to the NCAA tournament.
2017 - 10 teams, 3 at large berths. USC, Stanford, UCLA and Cal all went to the NCAA tournament.

Yep, obviously I was wrong when I assumed the men's and women's selection criteria would be the same.

RE: WWP: MPSF championship. Stanford - USC now - M T - 04-24-2022

Stanford WWP is playing USC for the MPSF championship.   Live stream is paywalled.

After 1Q, Stanford 3 - USC 2. Apparently USC got a last second penalty shot.

Stanford continues to be strong.
The score got to 6-2 before USC scored again to make it 6-3.

Again, Stanford is getting called for more exclusions. USC is 2 of 6 in powerplays + 1 of 1 for penalty shots  Stanford just 1 of 3 on powerplays.
Hicks & Neushul have 2 exclusions each.  That's worrisome.

At the half, Stanford 6 - USC 3.

RE: WWP: MPSF championship. Stanford 6 - USC 3 after Q2 - M T - 04-24-2022

3rd quarter: Stanford loses the 7th sprint in a  row.  Sigh.

Stanford gets called for the first 2 exclusions of the quarter (serially, not at the same time).  Maybe aggressive play is how they win, but it unnerves me.
Wallace now is the 3rd Stanford player with 2 exclusions (you're out at 3).
USC scores on that 2nd exclusion. (3 of 8)

Stanford returns the favor with a goal on an exclusion. (2 of 4)

But then, USC scores on a penalty shot. (7-5).
Stanford coach gets a yellow (USC coach got one in Q2)..

After some blocked shots on each side, USC gets their first natural goal.  (7-6)
Stanford then draws an exclusion but loses the ball.  Now 2 of 5 on exclusions.   This doesn't feel good.

USC gets an exclusion against Aria Fischer (her first) in the last 30 seconds and converts.   Tie game 7-7 at the end of Q3.

The 4th quarter starts with USC again winning the sprint (all 4).

In the first possession, Stanford is called for its 3rd penalty foul.  Hicks  is out of the game.
Stanford now down 7-8.  Ouch....

Stanford gets a powerplay.  First shot is deflected out of bounds, but a 2nd shot goes in.  8-8.

And Neushul gets a natural goal.  Good guys 9-8 !
Jewel Roemer then gets another natural goal.   10-8.
But USC immediately gets their 2nd natural goal.   10-9.

Stanford draws an exclusion with 3:16 left, and scores! 11-9.
With 3 minutes left, USC has time.
....  Some misses by each team, Stanford gets a 2nd offensive set after a missed shot.

At a timeout, Stanford up; 2 with 34 seconds to go.
A final exclusion is called on USC, and it's keep-away time.

Stanford wins 11-9.  Shots 22-28;  Exclusions 12-8.  Penalty shots 0/0 vs 3/3

RE: WWP: MPSF champions!! Stanford 11 - USC 9 - BobK - 04-24-2022

What a great performance by the Stanford team. On the the NCAAs. Win it all.

RE: WWP: MPSF champions!! Stanford 11 - USC 9 - BostonCard - 04-24-2022

The good news is that we don’t have to worry about making the NCAA’s. Will we be the #1 seed?
Of course we will likely have to do it again at the NCAA tourney.

Congrats to the team.

Question: is it worth the energy for even one player to win the sprint? It is fun to watch, but is it worth winning?

Absolutely. The extra possession is important. If you win all four, it's worth a goal a game, give or take.

RE: WWP: MPSF champions!! Stanford 11 - USC 9 - oldalum - 04-24-2022

I wish they'd abolish the sprint, and just start each quarter as they do after a goal, alternating initial possession by quarters after an initial coin flip.
