Future Stanford football scheduling -
Giants - 07-25-2022
After reading an article about the television ratings for Big 12 and PAC 12 teams (and the value of the Notre Dame/Stanford series), I took a look at the Cardinal’s future football non-conference schedules. That review raised some questions…
Why did Stanford and/or Notre Dame decide to end the series after 2024?
What is Stanford’s long term plan for scheduling out of conference opponents? (I noticed that San Jose State and Hawaii were the only games listed so far in 2025 and 2026. That is a rather weak duo)
Would Stanford consider replacing Notre Dame with USC as an annual out of conference opponent? The timing would certainly be right.
Note: All questions asked in the context of the upheaval conferences are currently experiencing.
Thoughts/comments???

My understanding is that the series with ND had a defined period of time when it was agreed to, and it ends in 2024. Not sure where the series goes given realignment. Last time I heard anything about it was that Stanford expected it to be renewed, but that was a couple of years ago.

We have future home-and-homes with TCU, Vanderbilt (started last year), and Boston College.

I'd like to see them play San Jose every year. Some of the very best old stadium games were with Sparti. Schedule North Dakota State, Nevada Reno, SD State, SMU, Utah State, Wyoming... exciting offenses. Most are D1's and ND State would probably beat them all.
If the PAC breaks up NEVER, ever schedule Utah and WSU.

Agreed re: SJSU. Would like to schedule SJSU and Hawaii every year. Would also like to keep top 25 D1 teams, including Vandy, Rice, Northwestern, Duke, UMich, Virginia. Maybe Wake Forest, maybe UMich, maybe Boston College.

Cal Poly coming soon Phogge. I’ll be ready.

Cal Poly already favored. You better not root for Stanford.

It’s not clear the Big10 will allow USC to play a non-conference game at Thanksgiving (whether Stanford or ND.) The ND games have wreaked havoc with the PAC-12 schedule for years. Could be a carrot/incentive for ND to join the Big10.

Big 10 doesn't have any conference games the September weekend we play USC, and neither does the Pac-12 other than us, so there's no scheduling reason not to continue the series.

Will USC decide to play ND and Stanford as 2 of their 3 non-conference games?
Would Stanford play USC, UCLA, and ND as their 3 OOC games?

I'm not sure SC really feels a need to play us as an OOC opponent, I don't think their fan base cares as much about playing us as our fan base cares about playing them
if we did and we keep ND in the Oct (there) Thanksgiving Sat (here) rotation then we would be playing USC and UCLA most years in weeks 2 and 3 of the season. If we went to the OOC games as the first three games of the season then we'd play the three of them in games 1, 2, and 3.
I for one would not really want to play the same three teams in OOC games every year as I like the occasional road trip to a new place.

Yeah, you can imagine an arrangement where Notre Dame would get an annual thanksgiving game in LA, alternating between USC and UCLA.

Questionable assumption that we actually have what one might consider a fan base.
As for SC, they once enjoyed an annual trip to the Bay, but according to some posts on their board, the allure of SF is no longer appealing.

That would be a significant concession to the new kid on the block to leave one of its schools without a conference opponent on Thanksgiving weekend? They could allow USC and UCLA to do that after ND joins. I would think that weekend would be a plum for the 14 other schools. If USC and UCLA both hosted, they could cycle through the conference in 7 years.

I want Hawaii every other year. I need a road trip...

That’s what I meant… the concession would be an incentive for Notre Dame to join.
