Meanwhile, one can scout #11 Tennessee hosting #12 Indiana on ESPN 2 now (3PM Monday)

RE: WBB TV: Texas at UConn 330pst FS1 - Card10Fan - 11-14-2022

Shaylee Gonzalez has really struggled with the UConn pressure. Both teams look pretty evenly matched. I think Texas looks better but will see how the 2nd half plays out. So far Fudd has been shut down completely.

RE: WBB TV: Texas at UConn 330pst FS1 - martyup - 11-14-2022

Taylor Jones is playing for Texas.  Remember her at Oregon State?

Parish from Oregon is now playing for Indiana.

Fudd finished out the half with some great play.

I will say credit to UConn for taking it to Texas. You beat them by showing aggressiveness right back and they’ve done that all game. UConn has been more aggressive and physical.  Texas full credit presses and UConn just runs it right back at them and beats them with crisp passing and wide open shots. That’s how we should play against Texas but we never seem to handle it well.

Would be quite a different game if Harmon were healthy...lots of those turnovers less likely. Fudd wide open? unlikely.

Yes Harmon would make a difference. Texas has enough talent though to keep this closer than it’s been. UConn is also really good at home and has played great in the 2nd half.

Part of the reason UConn could attack the pressure is because they have a point guard (Muhl) who is a very good ball handler and has very good vision.  We have one now in Lepolo.

Last year we struggled against the press because our three starting guards (Wilson, Hullx2) were not good ball handlers.  Thus our PF (Jones) had to handle the ball and when she would outlet to Wilson or Lacie, they would not attack the basket but rather play it safe and pull the ball out and wait for the defense to reset.

My take is that in Wilson we had a good ball handler with so-so vision on the court, and with Jones we have a so-so ball handler with excellent vision on the court.  It is my hope that with Lepolo we have an excellent ball handler with excellent vision on the court.  And since I am greedy, I would like to see her offense and defense get up to Amber Orrange standards at least.

I think Lepolo showed us in the Portland game that she can put the ball in the hoop when she wants to.  However, she clearly has been focused on ball control and assists.  IMO, she only has to score enough to keep defenses honest.  On offense, we need her to protect the ball, break presses, and make assists.  So far, she has proven very effective.

Agreed.  If she can do that against South Carolina I will be more than satisfied.

UConn's aggressiveness beat Stanford in the national semis last April. It wasn't forcing turnovers. Stanford only had 11 TOs. But UConn was relentless on defense to prevent Stanford from getting good looks (Stanford only 4-23 on 3 pointers) and they were relentless going after the ball (outrebounded Stanford by 9). Say what you will about Auriemma, but his teams almost always play big games with a non-stop intensity that opponents can rarely match.

RE: WBB TV: Texas at UConn 330pst FS1 - treetop11 - 11-15-2022

As good as we are, I don't think we beat either of those teams. They play at a much faster pace than us- with fewer turnovers - and are more physical. And unlike most teams we face, their players make their shots - around the basket, midrange, and from 3. Both press well and play pressure defense. Both have deep rosters. They're terrific athetes. Mainly, I don't think we can keep up with their pace. We would have to play our very best game and/or they have an off game.

I think you are significantly underestimating our talent level. I have to strongly disagree with your assessment, especially your last sentence. If the year was 2015 and our team from that season was facing a Breanna Stewart-led UConn squad, then yes, they would have to have an off game for us to have a chance of winning but not now.

We have a very deep roster; I would argue that among the deepest we've had in the nearly twenty years I've followed the program. Our posts, such as Brink and Iriafen can sprint down the floor as fast as any frontcourt in the nation. As others have mentioned, we have Lepolo who is much more experienced in the PG role, handling the ball even as a freshman than the Hulls who had to play out of their natural position last year.

No one on UConn's team really scares me besides Fudd, especially with Bueckers out. Yes, they beat us last season in the FF, but we were the ones who played a miserable game and I think even Geno admitted that he was surprised that they won (and that was with Bueckers).

As for Texas, I know they weren't at full strength without their star guard Harmon and their pressure defense (along with their less than honorable play style) concerns me, but I would certainly not say that we would have to play our very best game and hope that they drop a level for us to have a chance of winning. We handled Taylor Jones fairly well when she was with their Beavers and I would certainly take Iriafen and Brink over their starting frontcourt of Moore and Gaston.

Many years ago, we bought the paint and painted our house.  I knew every place we left a drip or a bit of paint got on the wrong part and all the other imperfections. I felt we had done a poor job. But others just saw a great job done.

I believe if you watched another team week in and week out, you’d be painfully aware of all their flaws and, in turn, marvel at Stanford’s abilities.

RE: WBB TV: Texas at UConn 330pst FS1 - spike5882 - 11-15-2022

I actually felt the opposite having watched the game.  I’ve watched both teams in their previous games, as well as South Carolina’s games thus far. My biggest takeaway is that SC and Stanford are a step above 3 and below this year.

They did go at a face pace but that is Texas and they are going to do that and keep their motors going.  UConn teams have also done that in the past, but Stanford always kept them low scoring.  I felt neither team shot well (with the exception of Azzi Fudd in the second half).  I think our front court would shut either team down, and Lepolo gives us the option to run on breaks just as fast as either of these teams.  Both teams were pretty sloppy looking to me.  But they did both have intensity from beginning to end.  And UConn is better than I expected them to be.  But I still think there’s a clear top two teams in the country this year after the first week and a half of play.

Great analogy.  Having painted our house too, I can relate.

We are so busy looking at the trees, scrutinizing every knot and drooping limb, that we miss the magnificence of the forest.

The great thing about sports is that we actually play games, and there are winners and losers, and this settles all arguments.  Sports are existentialism in practice--we are what we actually accomplish, not what we think we are or say we are or convince other people what we are.  Teams are the makers of their own meaning.  And it will be fun to see what this team is able to make for itself this year.  It could wind up a lot of different ways, but I have never before been so optimistic.  The team will either confirm or deny my optimism by what it actually does, and all our fun talk will drift away on the breeze.

Fudd had 7 turnovers last night. If Fudd were Jones, this board would surely respond, "We got the win, but SEVEN TURNOVERS??? If Jones can't hold onto the ball against a Texas team missing Rori Harmon, what's she going to do against South Carolina!"
