OT: announcers -
Phogge - 12-08-2022
Watched a bit of Prime football, either last week or the week before. Michaels seems to be phoning it in. Sounds tired. Anything for cash.
Made me think of great lines:
Don Klein: “Clark caught a touchdown!”
Murph: “AND he was FOULED.”
Starkey: “Yikes!”
Miller: “Adios pelota!”
Russ Hodges: “It’s gonna be in, I believe. THE GIANTS WON THE PENNANT.”
Red Barber: “Ohhhhhh Doctor!”
Scully: “Well it’s 9:49 in Los Angeles and Sandy is a strike away. Curve ball, got him swinging, a perfect game!” Paraphrase.

Chick Hearn: He shot it from the popcorn machine. Or close as best I remember
Bill King. The Ref tells Madden get your fat a off the field
Lon Simmons. Marshall is running the wrong way

Ray Scott: Starr, Dowler, touchdown….
Scott was the best television football announcer ever. I wish modern announcers were required to watch his telecasts before getting a job.
Brevity is the soul of wit

Scott... I agree. Great voice on top of brevity.
Forgot Tom Durkin: “Concern from out of the clouds.” “And Sunday Silence holds on by a desperate neck.” “Here is the incredible, invincible, unbeatable Cigar.”

We have great King and Simmons quotes from multiple sports. King: “Barry from Livermore. Two!” Second place for “ladies and gentlemen, that was a Tommy Nunez call…”. Simmons: “and you can tell it goodbye!”

And, of course, who can ever forget King’s “Mother’s Day” shoutout to Ed Rush. Due to the expletive, it can’t be played on the radio anymore but those who heard won’t forget it….

I watch enough on TV to tolerate most announcers and commentators.
What I am not a fan of is a color commentator, or production truck, that will carefully review and discuss two or three angles of the last play while managing to then miss the NEXT snap completely.
I actually enjoy watching the different substitutions, the huddle breaking formation and potentially other pre-snap adjustments, but I know I have to endure replays of rather typical plays to let the color person prove they know the game. However when that replay analysis causes viewers to miss the actual game...Errrr!

Bill King's Holy Toledo. . . .
(and it was "get your big butt off the field.")
The best announcers are the ones who have it come naturally, not rehearsed. King was great at that, Madden as a color guy, was the same. Guys like Greg Papa and his "Touchdown Saaan Fraaan Cisco", not so much.

Lindsey Nelson calling the Cotton Bowl. His unique pronunciation of “Alabama” still resonates after all these years….

Lindsay Nelson; "Pitchout to Lynch. Touchdown!" (The end of the Sooners 47 win streak.
He and Heywood Hale Broun wore the ugliest sports jackets west of the Atlantic Ocean.

"Touchdown, USC!" (after Stanford scores a touchdown in the Greatest Upset Ever)
Some real good ones (some of these are before my time, but I've heard them they are that famous)
"Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier!"
“Havlicek stole the ball”
"Touch ‘em all, Joe. You’ll never hit a bigger home run in your life." (as a Blue Jay fan, Joe Carter's homer to win the World Series was awesome)
“Ring the bell, baby! Ding dong, the witch is dead!”
And of course
“Do you believe in Miracles? Yes!”

And since it is time for the World Cup:
"GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL"

Old 49ers Bob Fouts: Davis (Tommy) lines up, ball snapped, placed down, it's long enough but it's off to the left...and short.

Those are all really strong. But for me, it was Hank Greenwald in 1989.
I was born two weeks after Willie McCovey's liner (and the Giants WS hopes) died in Bobby Richardson's glove. Other than 1971 and maybe 1978 and 1986 and 1987, the Giants stunk during my early life and they hadn't won a pennant since 1962.
In 1989, as Clark, Mitchell, Robby and Matt Williams hit 2 HR's apiece, the Giants won the pennant in five games. Hank Greenwald's memorable line was "27 years of waiting have come to an end." Chills, for me anyways.
