Stanford Women's Golf Spring 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 01-19-2024

The spring season does not begin for women's golf for another month (more on that below). But there is news to report.

5 current Stanford players received invitations yesterday to play in the 2024 Augusta National Women's Amateur - Rachel Heck, Megha Ganne, Kelly Xu, Sadie Englemann and Paula Martin Sampedro.  The ANWA tournament will be played April 3, 4 and 6.

The Cardinal's spring schedule begins Feb 19-21 at the P12 Preview in Hawaii. A week later Stanford plays a dual match vs. SJSU at CordeValle followed by the Juli Inkster Invitational at the Meadow Club in Marin. Over the next 7 weeks, Stanford is only scheduled to play one tournament, the PING ASU Invitational the week before the ANWA. So the team will only play 3 spring tournaments plus a dual before P12s at the end of April and NCAA regionals in May. It seems kind of thin to me. But in Coach Walker we trust!

One other note. Rose Zhang will be cutting back on her LPGA tournaments for the first part of 2024 as she juggles Stanford classes and pro golf.

She is playing this week and after 2 rounds is T7 at -4.

Heck and Englemann are returning?  My God and if so, with four elite freshmen coming in, Stanford's second five could qualify for NCAAs; we have nine--nine--players ranked in the world top 100.

Hulk, I don't think that Heck and Englemann have stated their intentions for next year one way or the other. I would assume that they (and Seay) will be moving on after NCAAs.

Even so, a 2024-25 team of Ganne (junior), Xu (junior), Sampedro (soph) and 4 studly frosh (all of whom also have been invited to ANWA) is going to leave a couple of very accomplished players on the sideline next year.

Yeah, 9 current and future Cardinal players received ANWA invitations.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf Spring 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 02-19-2024

After a break of nearly 4 months (last match - November 1), the Stanford women are finally back in action. They are competing in Hawaii at the somewhat mis-named P12 Preview. The field does not include ASU or Oregon. But the other P12 schools are there (except Utah which does not have a women's golf team) plus Hawaii, San Diego State and San Jose State.

Stanford's lineup is Sadie Englemann (1), Paula Martin Sampedro (2), Kelly Xu (3), Megha Ganne (4) and Caroline Sturdza (5). Stanford does not have a clear #1 golfer. I think just about all of the top 4 have played #1 at some point this season. They are all strong players who are ranked in the top 50 in the country right now. But the competition for #5 is most interesting. Sturdza is playing rather than Rachel Heck. That might mean that Sturdza beat Heck in qualifying. Sturdza is a capable player (though she has been erratic), but she is not a former All American and NCAA individual champ who made it to the US Amateur semifinals last summer as is Heck. Heck did play poorly in the fall. I do not know if that is related to physical problems which have plagued her for the last 3 years. Or perhaps as a senior who is also an ROTC officer, is it hard to maintain a singular focus on golf with so much else going on. Maybe we will gain some insight if the TreeCast is able to interview Coach Walker, Coach Riley or one of the players.

Stanford's lineup also does not include Brooke Seay, another former All American and a member of the 2022 national championship team. She has not played all year and I am beginning to assume that her Stanford golf career is at an end. She suffered a major concussion over a year ago and has not really been able to compete since then.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf Spring 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 02-25-2024

For the very few who follow college golf, Stanford finished 2nd to UCLA in the P12 Preview. Paula Martin Sampedro finished 2nd, Sadie Englemann was 4th, Megha Ganne was 10th. Kelly Xu shook off a first round 80 with a nice final round 71. Caroline Sturdza failed to break 75. Freshman Martin Sampedro now has finished 7th or better in 5 tournaments to start her Stanford career.

Stanford's performance was enough to move them up to #1 in the NCAA rankings. Defending national champ Wake Forest dropped after a poor tournament finish.

Listening to the College Golf Talk podcast, they reached out to Anne Walker to ask about Rachel Heck. Walker had no comment. So we don't know what's going on.

On the professional side, Albane Valenzuela just finished 2nd in the LPGA tournament in Thailand today. She had a final round 63 including 30 on the back 9! I think this is her best result as a pro.

Thanks Spiney Worrisome about Heck

And sad I believe for Seay who returned for a 5th year but has not been able to play. At least she will get a master's degree. She has been an academic All American each year at Stanford.

Rachel Heck is playing today vs SJS

RE: Stanford Women's Golf Spring 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 02-29-2024

No live scoring. But Stanford defeated SJS 5-1. Heck won her match. The Cardinal return to tournament action next week in Marin at the Meadow Club. We'll see if Heck or Sturdza takes the 5th spot. It's good for the team to have healthy competition for spots in the lineup.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf Spring 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 03-05-2024

The #1 ranked Stanford women's golf team is playing a 54 hole tournament Monday and Tuesday at the Meadow Club in Marin. It's kind of a thin field. USC (#8), San Jose State (#19) and Cal (#25) are the only other top 25 teams playing.

The teams played 36 holes today. After a slow start in the morning, things clicked for the Cardinal in the afternoon. Everyone shot par or better led by Paula Martin Sampedro at -5. Sadie Englemann, Megha Ganne and Caroline Sturdza shot -2. Kelly Xu was even par (the drop score).

Stanford leads Washington by 3 shots and USC by 7 shots in the team race. Martin Sampedro is in 3rd and Englemann and Ganne are tied for 5th in the individual standings.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf Spring 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 03-05-2024

The 3rd round today was about 2/3 complete when play was suspended by rain. Too much standing water on the course. The organizers ultimately decided to cancel the round. The 36 hole results (noted above) become final.

Stanford now takes a 3 week break before its final regular season tournament in Phoenix followed by the Augusta National Women's Amateur.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf Spring 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 03-27-2024

The women's golf team plays Thursday-Saturday at the ASU Ping tournament in Phoenix. It's the final tournament before P12s and the post-season.

Stanford's lineup will be the same players as for the other events this spring - Englemann, Ganne, Martin Sampedro, Xu and Sturdza. Heck will play as an individual. It's a very strong field with 8 of the top 14 teams playing.

Live scoring will be available at https://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=28635

Meanwhile, this article on Sadie Englemann is definitely worth your time - https://golfweek.usatoday.com/2024/03/23/sadie-englemann-stepping-out-of-shadow-stanford-teammates-augusta-national/

We also learn from the story that Rachel Heck has been playing through a shoulder injury this season.

Wonder if by "shoulder injury" they mean her TOS (the reason she had her rib removed). So sad such a spectacular college career was derailed by illness and injuries.  But sounds like she has an incredible future ahead of her outside of competitive golf.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf Spring 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 04-01-2024

Stanford finished a mediocre 5th at the PING/ASU tournament. Paula Martin Sampedro finished T4 for another top 10 individual placing. She is separating herself from her teammates as Stanford's clear #1 player. Stanford may have a contender for best freshman in the country for the 3rd time in 4 years after Rachel Heck and Rose Zhang.

The next tournament is P12s in 3 weeks. Before that, we get a chance to watch 9(!) Stanford affiliated players in the Augusta National Women's Amateur which is being contested this Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Current Stanford golfers in the field:
Sadie Englemann
Paula Martin Sampedro
Kelly Xu
Megha Ganne
Rachel Heck

Future Stanford golfers in the field:
Leigh Chien
Meja Örtengren
Andrea Revuelta
Nora Sundberg

Golf Channel will provide coverage from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm pacific on Weds and Thursday. NBC will pick up coverage on the final round from 9 am to 12 pm on Saturday.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf Spring 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 04-21-2024

The P12 women's golf tournament started today. It kicks off a week with 5(!) conference championship events (men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis, beach volleyball).

The women are playing at Palouse Ridge in Pullman. Stanford leads after the first of three rounds. A solid round across the board. 2 players at -1 (Heck and Ganne) and 2 players at even par (Martin Sampedro and Xu). The course was tough today with only 5 players under par. No one broke 70.

You can track results here - https://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=28761

Interesting fact (at least to me) is that Stanford has only won 2 P10/P12 golf championships - 1999 and 2014.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf Spring 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 04-22-2024

Scoring conditions improved DRAMATICALLY on Day 2. The average individual score was 5 1/2 shots less than on Day 1!

Stanford shot the 2nd best team score of the day at -14. The Cardinal were led by Ganne with 67 (-5) followed by Martin Sampedro, Xu, and Englemann all at 69 (-3). Heck had a late bogey or she would have joined the group at 69. Her 70 (-2) was the drop score.

USC made a big move today. Their team score of 268 improved on Day 1 by 30 shots!! They counted scores of 64, 65, 67 and 72.

Going into Day 3 tomorrow, Stanford leads USC by 6 shots for the team championship. Oregon is in 3rd, 10 shots back.

USC has been Stanford's nemesis of late. The Trojans eliminated Stanford from the NCAA tournament last year. USC also has won P12s 3 of the last 4 times the tournament has been held.

No live TV for the final round. You can track results here - https://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=28761

Really happy to see Heck playing (and playing well).  She's one of 4 Stanford golfers T3 or better right now!

Yes it is.  Everyone is playing pretty well.  Stanford's 5 players all are in the top 8, that is pretty impressive.  They have opened the gap from USC a few strokes which is nice. Keep your fingers corssed.

I'm more than happy; Heck makes my list of favorite Stanford athletes ever (with Luck, Winesberry, Ledecky, Lichti, Love, and Iriafen).  The possibility of her not playing in the last NCAA championship of her college career really was unsettling me.  (A lack of any faith in Sturdza figured in this.). How fitting if Stanford would win the title in her last collegiate match.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf Spring 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 04-23-2024

Congratulations to Coach Walker and the women's golf team! They are the 2024 (and final) P12 conference champs.

The team was led today by a sizzling 65 (-7) from Kelly Xu. Supported ably by a 69 (for the 2nd consecutive round) from Sadie Englemann and 71s from Megha Ganne and Rachel Heck. Paula Martin Sampedro maybe showed some frosh inexperience or nerves today. She closed with a 74.

Stanford defeated USC by 8 shots.

USC's Catherine Park ran away with the individual medal. But Stanford placed 4 golfers in the top 11 - Xu (2), Ganne (T4), Heck (T7) and Englemann (T11).

Stanford will learn its regional assignment tomorrow when the NCAA announces the field for regionals. I expect them to be sent either to Las Vegas or Cle Ellum, Washington.
