WBB: Stanford 76 Oregon 56 - 81alum - 03-01-2024

Preview: Oregon

In the last Pac 12 regular season game we will ever play, we take on Oregon in Eugene Saturday at 2pm. We have secured the top seed in the Pac 12 tournament, but a bad loss might be troublesome for our NCAA seeding, and so there is still plenty of incentive to play well.

Oregon is having a down year after a couple of years of devastating transfers. (They lost Prince to TCU, Paopao to South Carolina, Rogers to Texas A&M, and Isai to BYU just last year.)  Last night they suffered a loss to Cal on their home floor. They are 11-19 overall, and in sole possession of last place in the Pac 12 at 2-13. Oregon has sunk to 68 in Massey’s ratings, and NET is down to 105.

This will be senior day for Oregon, but Oregon is a very young team.  None of their starters will be graduating.  The senior with the most minutes is Ulla Chamberlain at 14 mpg, who is on her third school.  But there are others lower on the roster, so it might be an emotional send off.  On the other hand, Oregon has been losing far more players to transfer than to graduation of late.

The last time we played Oregon, at Maples on January 19, we won 88-63 in a game where Brink played only 6 minutes. Five other players were in double digit scoring, and Oregon was two dimensional with Chance Grey and Philippinna Kyei carrying the scoring load. You can read my previous preview and our thread of that game here:

https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=24732&highlight=WBB%3A+Stanford+88

Last night Chance Grey scored 17 points and nearly pulled out a fourth quarter victory.  Grace Van Slooten, who did not play well against us last time, seems to be on track again and had 14 points last night.

I can almost hear Tara now: “The most important thing is to stay healthy and happy.” I hope we have the wherewithal to grab a big lead, to rest our starters, and to give everyone else an opportunity. That would be ideal, going in to the Pac 12 tournament. It also might be a time to work on certain problems that we have seen exposed late in the season. We certainly don’t want to move ahead with a hangover from the last game.

Stepping back from the preview, I can’t help but feel strangely sad about where Oregon is. Graves has clearly been a very good—even a great—coach in the past, dating all the way to St. Mary’s and Gonzaga. And he should have had a national championship but for COVID. But somehow the transfer bug has been very, very unkind to Oregon. I’m not sure why, whether it is something about Graves, or about Oregon weather, or just randomness. But the changes in college sports, which we have so often bemoaned at Stanford, seem to have been even worse for Oregon WBB, leaving them a shell of their former selves. Which would make it even worse for us if we do not show up and play well.

Thanks, 81. I especially appreciate your last paragraph, totally agree

Thanks again. Yes great last paragraph

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Oregon 2pm Satuday - Jskass - 03-01-2024

I’ll be the loud one there. Based upon their results this year, it may be easier to hear Stanford fans than it was in Corvallis yesterday.

We will be there too, lousy seats, the best I could get. Assume we'll be able to "upgrade" them tomorrow by moving around. Definitely not possible at Gill yesterday.

For those of you that drove from California to the Oregon games, please consider the weather situation in California before committing to drive home on any particular schedule.  Lots of snow (or rain) and wind.  Please drive safely!

Thanks for the warning. We're watching the weather reports closely, already decided to take the coast route rather than I 5 and deal with Mt Shasta etc. but even the coast looks iffy in places.

Thx. Get to fly East to still winter!

Team just came on the floor, Talana not dressed to play

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Oregon 2pm Satuday - CompSci87 - 03-02-2024

WSU/Colorado is close, so could potentially run long. OSU is blowing out Cal.

The Stanford game is listed on both Bay Area and National feeds.

Beautiful arena and a scattered crowd, unlike Gill which was packed to the…

And Talana in sweats rebounding for the team - she can use a day off.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Oregon 2pm Satuday - CompSci87 - 03-02-2024

WSU/Colorado was tied with about 4:30 left when I turned it on. Colorado went on a 5-0 run, then WSU on a 14-0 run. Tuhina hit a Steph Curry depth dagger 3 to bring the lead to 6 and pretty much ice it. Wow! Game ends just in time to not run over the top of the hour. :-)

See my post over on the season WBB thread. Includes video.

Please tell me this is the last time I’m ever going to have to look at that Oregon floor.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Oregon 2pm Satuday - CompSci87 - 03-02-2024

Ugly game so far:  neither team can score.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Oregon 2pm Satuday - BobK - 03-02-2024

It must be cold inside Knight
However Junp sets the all time Stanford record. Most games played.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Oregon 2pm Satuday - mbdude - 03-02-2024

be nice if she made a couple of 3s

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Oregon 2pm Satuday - CompSci87 - 03-02-2024

Dang, I thought Nunu had that 3.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Oregon 2pm Satuday - liveoak - 03-02-2024

The floor looks better at game level than shot from above for TV.

Oregon’s size is affecting Cam and Kiki. A lot banging going on - tough to referee

I’ll take your word for it re the floor. Agree with the game analysis. No bone showing, no foul.

Timeout about 7:00. Cam with 8 pts, 8 reb, 0 fouls. OR with 5 fouls, ST with 2, both on Kiki.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Oregon 2pm Satuday - CompSci87 - 03-02-2024

The second quarter was a lot more fun to watch than the first!
