Forgive me if I missed this, but did Bernie even bother to designate an assistant as interim head coach, to, you know, try to keep things from unraveling too fast?

Interims are only a thing during the season.

won't be surprised if the team has to face many ex-cardinal next year in the ACC

What would this do? Players would still be waiting around to see who the new HC was.

One does wonder whether Carlyle would have stayed even if Haase did. I can't imagine he thought better times were ahead of us with multiple starters graduating, an anemic entering frosh class, and the unlikelihood of transfer portal help...
RE: The exodus begins -

Who is left on the roster? It was going to be thin even with Carlyle.
Stojakovic (frosh)
Agarwal (soph)
Gealer (soph)
Thompson (redshirt soph)
Reynaud (junior)
Cammann (frosh)
Grant (frosh - walk on?)
Seniors with a year remaining if they want to stay and can be admitted to grad school:
Murrell
Angel
Stanford has one commit for next season, Elijah Crawford, a 6'1" guard.

I guess Carlyle could still come back if he decides he likes the new head coach, right?

I was just going to post that is my understanding. Not holding my breath that he will return.

Given the existence of the portal, ANY coach departure from a D1 program will result in a batch of key players testing the portal.
That is a given. Muir presumably knew this coach termination was imminent, and had to understand the portal's impact to the roster if hiring inaction lingered for more than a few days. Therefore a solid AD would have to developed a plan for the new coach should be announced ASAP, presumably a couple of days at most.
Therefore, I would expect a competent AD would be in a position to announce the next Stanford coach before March 25th. That should be viable as the really good programs are probably at bit too busy to be browsing for portal additions this week.
The portal is largely a one way deal for Stanford. I can only guess that appreciation of the one way reality was part of the reason Haase was retained year after year. Very rough 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 seasons are just going to be part of this turnover deal for Stanford.

Disagree completely. If you have a real shot at a good coach in the NCAA Tournament (like, for instance, WSU's coach Kyle Smith), I think a good AD waits to interview that coach.

Well, with any luck, St. Mary's will tank in the opening round and Randy Bennett will become available quickly, both elevating Stanford and returning St. Mary's to the mediocrity whence it came...

Why would Bennett leave St. Mary’s for Stanford? It’s a better program, with great fan support.
He’s got a great thing going at St.Marys. I suppose if Stanford blows him away with the financial package it’s a possibility. But in all other respects, St.Marys is a better job.

1. Bigger challenge.
2. More money.
3. Nationwide platform.
4. More money.
5. ACC > Pac-12 > WCC.
6. More money.
7. Moving from St. Mary's Junior College to the single most prestigious academic institution on the west coast and arguably the most attractive academic institution in the country, and certainly the only one that mixes top-level academics and athletics.
8. More money.
9. Palo Alto > Moraga.
10. More money. He makes $948k, he's not even WCC average...seriously, the average is over $1.4 million. My guess is Haase makes 2x more than that.
He's 61 years old, and maybe he's comfy where he is. He's in decent shape and can probably coach another ten years. Why not at Stanford?

For number 7, Duke, Northwestern, and Vandy are similar.

I think the point was, "the single most prestigious..." Sure, the others are "similar," by the broad definition of the word, but they are not the same. Neither academically nor athletically. (I can be objective on this point, having attended none of them.)
In addition, only the Vandy job is available now or anytime soon, so the point is mostly moot.

His recruiting would likely change a lot, his current roster has
- Five international players, four from the Australia (all four went here
https://www.australia.basketball/get-involved/pathways/centre-of-excellence ) and one from Lithuania
- Five players from East Bay high schools (two from Granada, one from Piedmont, and two from Compolindo)

The way things are going, I might be able to make the team.
I've got a deadly fall away jumper...but that was a long time ago. : )
