FB -- TCU Game Thread - martyup - 08-30-2024

Tonight marks the beginning of the Troy Taylor's second season.  This is an era that begins in a far different college football landscape than at the start of the Shaw era.  We are strangely now a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference.  This season marks the first time there will be a 12 team playoff to determine the FBS National Champion.  Many FBS teams today consist of a majority of players that started their college football careers at other schools.  NIL has created a situation in which booster groups are allowed to offer top players millions of dollars to play for their school.  Combined with the liberal transfer rules, college football has become what many call a professional farm league for the NFL.  These developments have disappointed many traditional college football fans, and even driven some to stop following and watching college football.

Some on this board have questioned whether it is appropriate for Stanford to continue to participate in college football.  Some have suggested that Stanford should drop down to a lower division.  The developing issue of CTE adds more uncertainty to the future of Stanford football.

With all that said, tonight our team straps on their shoulder pads, snaps up their chin straps, and takes on the TCU Horned Frogs at Stanford Stadium.  As an alum and a long time fan of Stanford football, I will be eagerly cheering on our team and hoping to see a victory tonight.  GO CARD!

Five high school players and a middle school football player have died so far this year.  It's unclear how many of those are due to football or were preventable, so in and of itself the statistic isn't that helpful.  But given the age and how early in the school year we are talking about, it's more than I would have expected, and I do think we should be having a conversation of football versus an alternative (looking forward to watching flag football in the 2028 Olympics).

Be on alert that ESPN might move the start of the broadcast of our game to ESPN2 or ESPNews if the OU game doesn't end by 7:30.

The NCAA has adopted the NFL's 2 minute warning, but they call it the "2 minute timeout."

Time for a return of the Angry Nerds!

Kick off postponed until 7:40.

Good to hear David Flemming with “All Right Now” as background music.

RE: FB -- TCU Game Thread - ADPinWDC - 08-30-2024

OK, I'll just go loco on first game...
EL PALO ALTO 28, SAD SAPOS (Toads) 24.
Sure, Toads (Los Sapos) get an 8-10 point spot -- BASED ON LAST YEAR, and Stanford's woeful Defense.
Oddsmakers don't have time to study TCU vs Stanford.
That point line could be WAY OFF.

Look at what they did on FLST vs GTEC in the OPENER!! Vegas had Noles as 11.5 FAVE. Blew it.

1) We are at home, and others have said the Toads don't do well on the Road. Check.
2) Stanford Defense surprises. I think the DBs make a good squad: Wright & Manley (raise to 4-stars), Edwards + Leigber a SR at Safety.
Jay Green from UW will work in as a Nickel. Experienced Secondary this year. We gotta make turnovers.
3) Key insight: TCU CBs are not at full strength -- Ayomanor & Corp go nuts. We are tall and capable at WR. Loaded.
Lots of quick stuff, flanker screens. Then over the top. Taylor will be in Pass First (Bill Walsh) mode.
I would run Farrell or another WR out of the backfield on flare and circle routes -- overload the slower TCU LBs.
4) YES, YES, can our O-Line handle it?? That is the greatest hope. But, pass blocking will be first.
5) Our RB by Committee? Nobody knows. Maybe some draw plays, jet sweeps to Farrell, mix it up.
Somebody rises up.

How conservative will Taylor play? I don't know -- but I am hoping he takes off the leash. Experiments. Nuthin to Lose.
My greatest fear is that Sonny Dykes -- a solid coach -- does Harbaugh on us and grinds it out. Keeps the ball.
Getting stops on third down might be our under-belly. But, they have gaps on their O-line also.
Fearless Trees: 28, Sad Sapos 24.

Each one worse than the prior

After 5 min of new season: we can’t run the ball
Our best plays are TCU penalties

I’ll take it!

RE: FB -- TCU Game Thread - SkiBum80 - 08-30-2024

After 7 min of new season: our OLine similar to last year. No surge on a run play, is hopeless. Pass blocking better.
Best run possibility is QB broken play scramble, as long as they don’t fumble or get killed and injured.

RE: FB -- TCU Game Thread - martyup - 08-30-2024

We've outscored our opponents this season . . .

OLine run blocking could be really abysmal this year. Hopefully the defense is better from last year.
