WBB: Stanford 94 WSU 65 -
81alum - 11-06-2024
Preview:
Stanford, coming off a remarkable win over Le Moyne--in which we set a school record with 18 treys--now takes on a team that will be a little closer to us in skill and size. That would be our old Pac 12 opponent WSU. Granted, WSU has never won a game against Stanford in scores of tries, but sooner or later it will happen, and I always hope it will be later.
We last played WSU on February 11 in Pullman, a game we won 73-58. But throw out anything we might have learned from that game. Our roster is radically different. We no longer have Jump, Brink, and Iriafen, and WSU has lost Murakatete--remember that confrontation? WSU returns most of its starters, however, including 6'2" Canadian Tara Wallack, 5'8" Italian guard Elenora Villa, and sparkplug guard 5'9" Astera Tuhina.
WSU opened against a terrific neighboring team--Eastern Washington, and narrowly won in overtime. Eastern Washington also took Gonzaga to overtime last year, and is a perennial top mid level team, so this is a good win for WSU. Wallack had 22 points, mostly inside, and seem to have taken a step up since last season. Tuhina and Villa also were in double digits, as was freshman guard Charlotte Abraham--from France, just about completing the United Nations distribution of the team.
WSU is not a big team, but then again neither are we. Demetre will need to defend Wallack, and we will need several good defensive guards to contain Tuhina, Villa, and Abraham. The chess match really begins, and it will be fascinating to see how Kate deploys her chess pieces. Kate has been the mastermind behind the defensive scouting reports for years, so this will be a familiar challenge.

This game is slated for AAA Extra, not ACC Network
At 7pm Thursday, ACC Network will debut 3-Day Weekend: Palo Alto. This is the 17th episode in a series that began in 2020.
From the network's press release, the show will cover the following attractions (including the Creamery and Dutch Goose):
Coffee milkshakes at Palo Alto Creamery, a longstanding diner popular with Stanford students.
Wine tasting and horseback riding at Garrod Farms, a family-owned and operated estate winery and stables.
A guided tour of the Winchester Mystery House, a historic landmark that was once the personal residence of Sarah Lockwood Pardee Winchester, the widow of William Wirt Winchester.
Delicious meals at Tamarine, a must-try Vietnamese fusion restaurant and Oren’s Hummus, a favorite amongst Stanford students for its fresh Mediterranean cuisine.
A sailing lesson at Shoreline Lake Boathouse, just a 15-minute drive from Stanford’s campus.
A quick stop at the local watering hole, Dutch Goose, a historic spot serving cold beers and burgers since 1966.

Thank you for the correction!
Since we are on the subject, could someone inform me more about how to get the ACC games on our local (Stanford/Palo Alto area) Xfinity cable package? Since I tuned out of football, I have not watched a single game on the new network, and as far as I know I still have my old sports package on Comcast Xfinity that had the old Pac12 network channel. Do I need to change my subscription to start to receive the new ACCN and ACCN Extra stuff--not that I even know what ACC Extra is?

To get ACCnet x, I go to ESPN.com, go to college sports, select women's basketball ( or soccer, or ...), then scores. The game will come up in the scores listing, with a "watch" option. Hit that, and if you're already logged into your Xfinity account but, you'll get into the game.
Another way, access from gostanford.com.
I can run you through it tomorrow night at halftime if you like.
Above, sorry about this, is what I do for getting soccer etc. For basketball, a bit more simple. Got to ESPN.com, then use the menu to get to women's basketball (NCAAW) or men's basketball (NCAAM). Then go to scores and find the Stanford game. Since we're not now a top 25 team, our game doesn't come up automatically unless we're playing a top 25 team. So change top 25 to ACC and the Stanford game will be there. Then click watch.

If you have Xfinity cable, have you tried channel 826? I'm in Palo Alto and that's where I get it. I have the Digital Preferred package (not sure if they still market it that way). I recently received a letter from Xfinity that I would now receive the Big 10 Network (on 1313) as a replacement for the Pac-12 Network.

826 is for the ACC net only. Doesn't give you ACC net x, which is where a lot of our games will be. But you can access it streaming via Xfinity. See my response re this above. Easy to get to, no problems, once you know the chain of clicks to make.

Ha ha me too. Hopefully that will be fixed pretty soon.
Regarding their big Wallack, I wonder if Agara will be our main defender put on her?

On Sling, you have to have Orange+Blue + Sports Extra, $60 + $15 to get ACCN (and, I think, ACCNx -- Sling doesn't say it on their website but I do get it). Ouch.
And, I've found that the Sling app on my Samsung TV is rotten. It freezes (black screen) when watching sports on ACCNx and I have to exit the app, restart it, find the game again, and continue (having lost a couple of minutes of live broadcast). I never have had it freeze on any other app or program source on Sling on Samsung. I do not have that problem when I watch Sling on my computer.
I have been unable to find a way to tell Sling about this problem.
---------
We are seeing more stovepipe sports networks. Want to see the Stanford-ND men's soccer match (and traditionally some of the women's hoops each year), you'll need to pay Flohoops and their set of networks. Want to see the Stanford-UCLA water polo match (and more WP), you'll have to pay Overnight sports.
---------
With PAC-12 network and Sling, I would have been able to record tonight's women's hoops live. Then I could come home from the gamer and rewatch the parts I wanted. Now, with ACCNx (at least on Sling), I can't record the game, I have to depend on them putting it up later, and streaming it to me, and inserting commercials randomly and frequently, but only so long as they offer the game.
With P12 network and recording, I could go backward during the game -- not so with ACCN or ACCNxd or the whole ESPN offerings.
And, you spend 30 seconds to back up 10 seconds. Of course, back when I had Comcast & TiVo, I could zip around the game (even live) and play it in slow motion. ("Wait, was that a foul?", zip back 30 seconds, watch it in slow motion, and then jump to live before the commercial is over.)
That's E$PN's idea of "progre$$".

MT, maybe it would be worthwhile to get a cheap outboard device that has a Sling app and see if that works better than the TV's app. Chromecast or the like, say.
I agree that there's been a lot of negative "progress" in TV land as things keep changing.

Surprised to see Tiffany Bird here. She did the USC/Ole Miss game on Monday.

At least Cam isn't playing. Tiffany would hand out fouls like she was getting paid for it.

Looking pretty good so far. We need to adjust to our post play when we are at a height disadvantage. We are trying to force shots when guarded by a taller player.

Yep, forcing a bit, and some of those forces were blocked

End of 1st Q. Stanford up 21-15. Heal with a nice 3. We're still trying to force shots in the paint when we're covered closely. More ball movement would get us better shots. BTW, we're 3-4 from beyond the arc. Keep shooting 3s!

Of interest re the 3s, includes one from Heal and two from lepolo, neither of whom had threes in Ke Moyne game. Means 8 Card players with 3s in the first two games
