MBB : Stanford 70 -- Norfolk State 63 - skip75 - 11-20-2024

Stanford is favored by 14-1/2 against the Spartans.  Stanford is up to #67 in the KenPom ratings.  Norfolk, at 197, is rated higher than Stanford's first three opponents, but lower than UC Davis (159).  Norfolk comes in with a 4-1 record against opponents rated 175 and lower.

Norfolk has a veteran roster.  All of their top 8 players transferred at some point from other four-year schools - 3 are seniors and 5 are grad students.  They get 42% of their scoring from a pair of 6'2" guards - Brian Moore (22.4 ppg) and Christian Ings (13.4).  Moore has some eye-popping shooting stats - 40/56 (.714) FGs, 8/11 (.727) 3s, and 24/26 (.923) FTs.  Other potential starters include apparently slender Kuluel Mading (6'11"/210 lbs), Tyrel Bladen (6'10"/235) and Jaylani Darden (6'5"/175).

Norfolk's team stats look mostly similar to Stanford's - although obviously against lesser competition.  Norfolk has given up more 3s per/game and has a much lower rebounding margin (and has been outrebounded in it's past three games when the competition stepped up from Penn St - Wilkes Barre & Virginia - Lynchburg to James Madison, William & Mary, and Hampton).

So in a game Stanford "should" win, maybe they can find some success hitting the boards and hitting some 3s.

Skip thanks the good preview
Good to see the very non-Haasian start for us.

RE: MBB : vs. Norfolk State, 7:00 - JJJ - 11-20-2024

We led by as much as 15, but are only up 5 at the half. Can’t let up against these Spartans. Let’s do this!

RE: MBB : vs. Norfolk State, 7:00 - SkiBum80 - 11-20-2024

At the half, 5 point lead
Too much jacking up off target threes, only hitting 24%.
Not enough drives & working it inside
But we have caused NorSt to commit a lotta fouls.

Live by the 3,
Die miserably by the 3

Painful to watch

RE: MBB : vs. Norfolk State, 7:00 - SkiBum80 - 11-20-2024

Sellers Gealer & Blakes are 1-14 in 3’s

Gealer just missed 2 more

I’d bench him
Clearly Coach told them at the half to work it inside more

42-42

Stanford 5 for 29 from three! Good grief!

RE: MBB : vs. Norfolk State, 7:00 - SkiBum80 - 11-20-2024

We have some of them in foul trouble
And our 3’s are not falling
Must take it inside more

This is bad basketball being played badly… by both teams.
That being said, I think we should keep jacking up the 3’s. They have almost all been fairly wide open. At some point, have to start dropping. And our drives aren’t doing much better. We almost always get fouled… and miss one of the foul shots.
Painful, indeed.

RE: MBB : vs. Norfolk State, 7:00 - SkiBum80 - 11-20-2024

Like Blakes just did

Refs calling fouls
Keep go inside
They foul us almost every time
Two of them w 4 fouls now

RE: MBB : vs. Norfolk State, 7:00 - JJJ - 11-20-2024

Agree 100%. Take it inside.

RE: MBB : vs. Norfolk State, 7:00 - SkiBum80 - 11-20-2024

Their 2 bigs each have 4 fouls

Their #5 Brian Moore Jr is very talented
As Skip identified in the preview

I’d agree if we were getting “and 1’s.” Our problem is that we’re getting “only 1’s.” :-(

Whew! We escape with a W. Blakes is a STUD.

RE: MBB : vs. Norfolk State, 7:00 - SkiBum80 - 11-20-2024

A few good key plays
And at least as many lucky plays
Gives us the win

(not) fun fact: we heavily recruited Blakes's younger sister, who turned us down for Vandy, and is now tearing it up in Nashville.

Sadly and I will never understand her decision.

My guess would be she didn't want to go that far away from home.
Living in Florida, I've talked to some kids who were recruited by Stanford and didn't go there.
One of their big reasons is usually it's too far from home.

That would make more sense if her brother wasn't on our men's team, but you could be right. C'est la vie, she ended up at a robber baron school regardless!
