WBB: LSU 94 Stanford 88 OT - 81alum - 12-02-2024

Preview:

Well, this is it:  A real test, in very hostile territory against a high powered team.  Based on what happened at Indiana we fans might be skeptical of our chances.  But we have also complained some about the level of competition, and there should be no more of that after Thursday.

LSU at 9-0 is ranked 5th.  We are unranked but got the 28th most votes in the latest AP poll.  Massey has LSU at 6 and Stanford at 11 but be careful of that 11—it is still influenced by last season’s numbers.

LSU is coached by Kim Mulkey, a controversial coach who left Baylor to rebuild LSU in 2021—something she did with astonishing speed in the day of ubiquitous transfers.   Little known facts about Mulkey that are completely irrelevant but go against stereotype:  she was born in California, she was her high school valedictorian with a 4.0 average.

Those looking for a vulnerability in the LSU team will want to re-watch the game against Washington, which LSU narrowly won 68-67. I don’t think LSU has been tested particularly in any of its other games.  The only ranked team it has played was NC State in the same tournament with Washington, and LSU handled them 82-65.  In other words, LSU has been dominant but also largely untested, save in those two games.  LSU no longer has Angel Reese, gone pro, and lacks that kind of dominant talll player in the post.  But they have a well balanced team with excellent forwards and guards.

LSU has three double digit scorers who have started all 9 games and play close to thirty minutes.

Flau’Jae Johnson, a 5’10” junior guard,  is averaging 22 ppg and makes 43% of her treys.  She has been at LSU all along.

Aneesa Morrow, a 6’1” senior forward, is averaging 18 ppg and makes 52% of her fgs.  She transferred in a year ago after playing 2 years at DePaul.

Mikaylah Williams, a 6’0” sophomore guard,  is averaging 14 ppg and makes 37% of her treys.  She is also an original LSU player.

LSU has numerous other quality players.  They also start a 6’2” forward and a 5’6” point guard, and get quite a few points off the bench from Kailyn Gilbert, a 5’8” junior guard.  We know Kailyn well, since she played her first two years at Arizona.

So how did Washington play LSU so close?  Washington surprised LSU and took a 24-11 lead in the first quarter, but LSU reasserted its defense and ground them down in the next three.  Washington had 18 turnovers, but LSU was only 3/18 from three point range.   The game was played in front of a crowd of 297, so I doubt very much that the energy level was anything like it will be when we play them in front of their own fans.

It is early in the season, and anything can happen.  For us to win all kinds of things will need to go right.  They could.  But the advantage will definitely be with the more experienced team, probably the more talented team, playing at home after having suffered a scare at a recent tournament.  On the plus side, I think we have the guards to defend Johnson, Williams, and Gilbert better than we would have last year, and our forwards should match up reasonably well with their forwards.  Will this be the first Kate Paye "defining" game?  If we get a win, it sure will.  Otherwise we will chalk it up to rebuilding and the learning experience.

Not really expecting to win but expecting (or at least hoping) it is a competitive game, and we don't suffer a blowout.
Based on our other road game (a double digit loss to a mediocre Indiana team) it is hard to be optimistic about our chances.
Hoping for the best. though.

Not expecting a win either.  However, I would like to see a vein popping spoiled brat fit by Mulkey that gets her a T.

LSU (9-0) is coming off a 131-44 drubbing of North Carolina Central (0-10).  The stat sheet looks crazy.  LSU had 9 players scoring double digits.  They shot 56.3 45.5 71.8.  They took 39 free throws and made 28.

I think this might be the best chance our team may have of beating them.  Don't get me wrong, I don't think that chance is very high.  However, LSU must be feeling pretty invincible right now and may have their guard down a bit.  One can only hope, which is what the Christians must have thought before being released into the Colosseum.

Serious response to a good quip:  you are  hoping for the right thing. Mulkey finds  a way to get the best out of her players . Her players reflect her approach to basketball; heart on your sleeve, all in commitment to winning and a lot of talent.   If she is yelling and mad at the refs it’s because her team is not performing and she doesn’t hesitate to go the the whip to get more effort.

Oddly, the one exception to this was a loss to us at Maples a few years back she. She was uncharacteristically calm as her more talented, higher ranked team lost . (Sorry, I can’t remember the year and am too lazy to look it up). But I’ll join you in hoping that Mulkey is fired up and angry.  My fear is that she will be quiet and relaxed with with a large lead.

i have problems with mulkey as well - her religiosity, her anti-lesbian stance, her failure to support brittney griner; but i also acknowledge that, as the 5'4" point guard for louisiana tech, she won 2 national championships and the naismith award. she is like pat summitt and dawn staley in being a star player before becoming a coach.

Good start for Stanford.  16-5 with 5:27 to play in the 1st.  Mulkey is getting irritated.

We may or may not win this game, but we have already proved that we belong on the same court as LSU.  What A start in hostile territory!

Great start indeed. The 3s are falling, and Nunu is effective inside. Also have the rebounding edge at 5:26 in the 1st Q, but can they keep it going? Tense here, watching this!

RE: WBB: Stanford @ LSU, Thu Dec 5 6pm, preview and game thread - martyup - 12-05-2024

We lead 28-15 after 1 Q.  Our team is certainly not intimidated by the cocky LSU players and the loud crowd.  This is fun . . . so far.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ LSU, Thu Dec 5 6pm, preview and game thread - 81alum - 12-05-2024

28-15 Stanford after 1.  3 more exactly like this please.  But realistically we will need to grind it out.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ LSU, Thu Dec 5 6pm, preview and game thread - M T - 12-05-2024

A promising first 10 minutes.  30 more..

RE: WBB: Stanford @ LSU, Thu Dec 5 6pm, preview and game thread - martyup - 12-05-2024

At least we got Mulkey upset.  In the 2nd Q we've gone cold from 3 and we're turning it over like it's a hot potato.

Well, LSU outscored us 22-11 in the 2nd Q to pull to within 2.  We beat them in the first half.  Let's beat them in the 2nd half and bring home a W.

Yeah. Not so much…

RE: WBB: Stanford @ LSU, Thu Dec 5 6pm, preview and game thread - martyup - 12-05-2024

We are out-shooting and out-rebounding LSU.  Turnovers (9) have killed us, otherwise we'd be well ahead at the half.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ LSU, Thu Dec 5 6pm, preview and game thread - 81alum - 12-05-2024

Well it was unrealistic to expect that LSU would allow 3 more quarters like the 1st.  But we are still leading the game, and we have the opportunity to correct the mistakes from the second quarter and pull out a win.  Turnovers and cold shooting cost us dearly.  Those both could change.  Let's see what kind of halftime coach Kate turns out to be.

Nunu seemed to go quiet in the 2nd quarter.  Not sure if it was how she was defended.  We need her to come on strong.  The good news is that we have no one with more than 1 foul.  We really need to diversity our scoring in the 2nd half.  Only Demetre, Agara, and Bosgana have been serious threats, and Agara and Bosgana cooled off in the 2nd quarter.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ LSU, Thu Dec 5 6pm, preview and game thread - martyup - 12-05-2024

Great start to the 3rd Q with a 9-2 run.  KP is a great coach.
