What are we even doing here?  Like we are now renting players for a year or two, and imparting what sort of education?  It’s one thing to take a high school player who figures out Stanford is not a great fit, but at this point the portal has become a turnstyle.  To what end?

Looks like he's declaring for the NBA draft and entering the portal as a backup plan.  I would feel a little better if he was just going to try the draft with Stanford as his only backup plan.

I mentioned this at the time, but...I'm a fan of OKC's Jalen Williams, a point guard who played for three years at Santa Clara, though he doesn't play for the NBA team I support. I'm not nearly as much a fan of Brandin Podziemski, also of SCU...but played there for just one year after transferring from Illinois. The epitome of a rent-a-player. Not sure if he went to class. Even though he plays for the Warriors, I kind of hope they trade him, tbh. He's got that mercenary attitude, and other kinds of attitude as well.

It's likely you all don't have all the information.

What would you advise your kid if he was told by his agent that he has these options:
1) A small chance at being selected in the second round, where he will either stick with a team or spend time in the G-League. 
2) Get paid $600K in NIL money at <insert good school> for the next 2 years. He will also have a better chance at kicking tail and becoming a first round pick.
3) Stay at Stanford, play out your basketball career with a smaller chance of improving your odds of playing professional ball. You might get some lower amount of NIL money, but you'll get your degree.

NOTE: For options 1 and 2, you could get reinstated at Stanford in order to finish your degree at a later time. 

He also might be doing Stanford a favor by entering the portal as it plays a factor in recruiting and allocation of NIL money to incoming recruits. For all you know, KS has been talking with him since the end of the season. 

Feel like you should quit with the mercenary, low integrity, rent-a-player insults. The horse has been beaten too often and it's dead. Don't think it's right to continue to judge the players for taking advantage of the new world even though you don't like it. You're not in their shoes, it's not amateurism anymore, let it go....

Right, it's not amateurism anymore, so any compunction about criticizing student athletes goes out the window.

If he transfers to another school, no good reason for Stanford to let him back in. Lots of kids work really hard to get in to Stanford, why should a mercenary athlete whose academics are clearly not a priority take one of their spots?

and of course anyone who transfer in is certainly not a mercenary, because if they were I'm sure we would never take them....

Hate the game, not the player, so to speak.  This is the market we in which Stanford chooses to participate.  While I don't like the idea of Sellers leaving, I can't blame him for having different motivations/values in life.  The market provided the right incentives for him to consider leaving.  Those incentives might or might not cause Stanford-loyal folks to leave, but cash speaks a certain language to people.

At best, this is just testing the market to see his worth and challenge Stanford's NIL collective to step up and make an offer.  At worst, Sellers doesn't see the full value of Stanford as a brand, and he seeks greener (ha) pastures.  What a world this is.

I won't bitch and moan about the carpet-bagging mercenary capitalists that are making 6 or 7 figures before they are old enough to buy a drink legally. 
I have far more pressing things to bitch and moan about.
But I do think that no matter how you view it, Sellers jumping into the portal is not a good development for our bball team.
How bad it is will depend on many things yet to see happen over the next 6 months or so, and of course I hope it ends up not so detrimental.

Why would Stanford let them back in? They were allowed in under a set of rules that necessitated their athletic participation. Once they're gone, they should have to re-apply.

Not much different than most resumes I see these days.  There are stints measured in months.

Indiana has no one coming back next year. All graduated or in the portal. 

It is just entertainment. No one says any of us have to watch or care. Players are finally getting a piece of the pie they baked and until someone turns this into real professional sports with contracts, free agency, trades, salary caps, and all the rest, this will be incredibly unbalanced. Maybe there ultimately will be a split into university-sponsored sports with employees (The Big SEC) and another group that goes back to something closer to the old model but without much money involved because that will be with the first NASCAR group. Then schools like Stanford can be 'pure' and have 500 people watching games in 50,000 seat stadiums that are used mostly for monster truck pulls and graduations.

No, they were admitted as "regular" students independent of their athletic participation. The admission has no asterisk. Their scholarship OTOH was contingent on their willingness to at least show up to play their sport.

Yep, but he hadn't received a good offer yet. I assume now he has and I will be sorry to see him go. He improved alot this year and might regret he left a good situation.. I do believe Smith and his staff are good at developing players.

I’ve been told the Lifetime Cardinal men’s basketball collective is over $2 million per year but is quite low in comparison to the rest of the ACC. And if it’s low in the ACC, it’s probably very low in comparison to the SEC and Big 10. That may change and grow with more men’s hoops success. I think recruiting the right kids and players staying with Coach Smith developing talent is how he wants this program to be built but still have to be somewhat competitive on the collective side.
