Directors' Cup 2024-2025 - fullmetal - 04-25-2025

BigEasyCard normally does this, but I think he's been away.

Stanford ends the winter cup standings in first place by about seven points (!!) over North Carolina.

https://nacda.com/documents/2025/4/22/24.25DI_WinterOverall_4.24.pdf

Quote:Scoring Structure Update for 2024-25: New this year, an additional countable sport has been added on the Division I side, bringing the total number of countable sports to five (5). On the women's side, soccer joins basketball and volleyball, while the men's side will continue to be baseball and basketball. Overall, 19 total sports are counted for the final standings in June, including the five countable sports, and the next highest 14 (max.) sports scored for each institution, regardless of gender.

https://nacda.com/news/2025/4/24/directorscup-division-i-learfield-standings-final-winter.aspx

However, at least one serious Cup tracker has Texas winning by a "healthy margin" and Stanford in third, behind North Carolina.  He projects zero points for Stanford baseball, unfortunately.

Here's hoping our new athletic director, whoever they may be, can keep Stanford in contention for the Cup despite all the changes to scoring.

RE: Directors' Cup 2024-2025 - Papa John - 06-02-2025

According to an unofficial, but usually accurate, real-time follower of the Directors' Cup, it's a horse race between Texas and USC (University of Satan's Children, not South Carolina). Stanford is likely to end up in third, our worst showing ever.

Stanford was shut out in Baseball, Men's Basketball and Women's Basketball, which happen to be three of the required sports in the current scoring guidelines. Too sad to look it up, but I'm guessing this is the first time that has happened.

RE: Directors' Cup 2024-2025 - fullmetal - 06-02-2025

There was a time when "required sports" points in baseball and wo/men's basketball would not have hurt Stanford at all...alas.

RE: Directors' Cup 2024-2025 - BobK - 06-02-2025

I just read they added a 5th mandatory
Women’s soccer. Stanford was Final 4

RE: Directors' Cup 2024-2025 - BostonCard - 06-02-2025

Correct

https://nacda.com/sports/2018/7/17/directorscup-nacda-directorscup-scoring-html.aspx

- Five of which must be Baseball and Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Women's Volleyball and Women's Soccer

So we got points in women's volleyball (73 pts) and women's soccer (83 pts).

I guess I don't mind Texas continuing to win the Cup if it means USC doesn't get one.

RE: Directors' Cup 2024-2025 - bnarver - 06-03-2025

I've been tracking the Directors' Cup for a couple of decades. I've never thought of USC as a challenge for the top spot. UCLA, yes. USC, no. Even UCLA has had problems lately. They were 10th last year and out of the top 10 the 3 years before that.

The reason this year's Cup is so close is that Stanford gets scores in only 2 of the 5 mandatory sports while Texas and UNC will score in all 5. There are 4 sports left: baseball, softball, men's outdoor T&F, and women's outdoor T&F.

I have Stanford at 1237.5 points. The 50 points they would receive in softball won't count. Any scoring they do in outdoor T&F would have to be better than the 60 points from beach VB and the 63 points from women's indoor T&F. Not likely.

I have Texas at 1098.5 points so far, including the 37.5 points for baseball. Texas has had problems in some of the sports they usually have done very well in. They only compete in 21 sports, so they lack the depth that Stanford and UNC have. They have only 5 points in men's basketball, they did a spectacular face-plant in baseball as the #2 overall seed and will get only 37.5 points, they won volleyball last year and only made it to the Sweet 16 this year, they were 7th last year in men's CC and 32nd this year. They are assured of 90 points in softball, so that puts them at 1188.5 points with 1198.5 points a possibility. At that point, they will have scored in the 5 mandatory sports and 14 elective sports. Any scoring they do in outdoor T&F will have to be better than the 27 points they have in men's CC and the 35.5 points they have in women's indoor T&F. Past history says they will do it.

I have UNC at 1115.25. They dropped out early in softball. They won their regional in baseball and are therefore assured of at least 64 points. They, like Stanford, already have scores in 14 elective sports, so anything they do in outdoor T&F will have to be better than the 40.5 points they have in men's golf and the 42 points they have in wrestling. Past history says that's not likely.

A caveat here. NACDA and I may differ on some of the points for sports. Hopefully not.

I used to do my own directors cup calculations as well but ever since this Twitter account came about I stopped as he's been very accurate. https://x.com/direct_cupdates/status/1929947301587357976?s=46&t=VpX3u4Js8gOP_gGUn80CEA

RE: Directors' Cup 2024-2025 - martyup - 06-04-2025

I think this is a good time to remind readers that Stanford has the most successful intercollegiate athletic department in the nation.  Stanford has won the Directors' Cup 26 times in 31 years (1993–2024), including a streak from 1994–95 to 2018–19.   Stanford won the Director's Cup so many consecutive times that they had to change the rules in 2017 so that other schools would have a fighting chance.  Even after they changed the rules, Stanford kept winning through 2019.  Then won it again in 2023.

So, has Texas pretty much wrapped this up now with their WCWS title?

Texas will win UNLESS:
1. Texas T&F underperforms to some degree
AND
2. U$C T&F overperform (1st, 2nd, or 3rd)

RE: Directors' Cup 2024-2025 - bnarver - 06-14-2025

I have USC winning the Directors' Cup with 1253.75 points, Stanford in 2nd with 1251 points, and Texas in 3rd with 1242.75 points. UNC finishes with 1181.25 points. It's possible another school passed them for 4th. Stanford did this while scoring in only 16 sports. USC had 18 sports; Texas and UNC had 19. Hope I made a mistake somewhere.

NACDA posted the totals as of June 8. This table shows all the points for every sport that schools have received to date. Baseball and the 2 genders for outdoor track and field were not completed as of that date. However, Texas and USC are now out of baseball, and outdoor track and field just finished today. USC tied Texas A&M for first in the men's competition and finished in 2nd for the women's. Stanford got 0 points in the men's; the women finished in 6th, which is much higher than expected.

Somehow I'm much more upset that we lost to U$C by 2.5 points than if we had come in third to Texas and U$C by a country mile. That tiny disparity leads me to way too many woulda coulda shouldas....

Oh, I had the exact same thought. That tiny margin means that just about anything that resulted in one spot difference in the final finishing order changed the result of the Cup. We're not just talking about WGolf or MGym getting us a third NCAA team title. Imagine WLax holding on to complete the comeback in OT in the round of 16.

Lost by two CMs. Jones lost the LJ
On the last jump. She did great of course but if she wins Stanford wins the Cup.

RE: Directors' Cup 2024-2025 - Papa John - 06-27-2025

Stanford's take on Directors' Cup 2024-25:

Quote:In addition to extending its NCAA team title streak to 49 straight years, Stanford maintained its stretch of top-3 finishes in the Learfield Directors’ Cup, presented annually to the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic department.

https://gostanford.com/news/2025/06/26/top-3-directors-cup-finish

As others have noted, this year's 3rd-place finish also happens to be the worst ever by Stanford in the Directors' Cup. On the other hand, a mere 4.25 points separated Texas (1st), USC (2nd) and Stanford, by far the closest finish ever for the DC. Lots of what-ifs, but it is what it is.
