Stanford vs. Oklahoma State: Thoughts/Predictions - Royce1987 - 12-14-2011

Howdy Card Fans!

First off, I spent my college career at OSU ruiting for y'all as my Pac-10 team due to one of my friends playing for ya! Chase Beeler? I'm sure ya'll know the boy. He's a monster. With that said, I just wanted to discuss the game, and hopefully drop my productivity at the office because of it.

My thoughts, if OSU can figure out a way to cover your tight ends, something we haven't had to deal with all year, I think OSU gets the Win. If we come in unprepared, or simply get out-athleted (word?) by you TE's we'll be screwed.

Actually this might sound crazy but we actually want OSU to air mail it more. But first and foremost we have to stop the underrated running game of the Cowboys, and get them into obvious passing situations. Iowa State's defensive gameplan was to get Weeden into 3rd and long and make him throw the ball.

Offensively our O-linemen have to pick up OSU's blitzkrieg. I remember the Bedlam game when the Okies were blitzing Laundry Jones constantly. I'm sure Andrew Luck will recognize this and exploit the hole left in the middle, by tossing a pass to a receiver doing a drag or slant route.

And most of all no turnovers!

Re: Stanford vs. Oklahoma State: Thoughts/Predictions - Gauss - 12-14-2011

Yep, turnovers could be key: OkSt have been surprisingly good and consistent snatching the ball out of the opponents hands.
I think OkSt won't be able to stop most of the Stanford drives without turnovers. Stanford's balance, especially having the Tree amigos healthy, should put OkSt's defense on the back foot.

I am curious how Stanford's D-line will play. If they are able to stop the run as efficiently as they have over this season, then it could get interesting. Weeden is almost flawless with enough time, but Stanford's pass rush has been fantastic. It could be very well where the game is won and lost.

For even turnovers and penalties, I think Stanford wins by about a touchdown or more.  :D

I think the powerful OSU offense is just able to be a bit more productive in the end.  But I counter that with the idea that Stanford will play loose and try to get Luck a big win.  I also think that with this being Luck's last game, he will be a bigger running threat than he has been all year.

OSU really wants to get a brobdingnagian win in this one to show the BCS.  I think they will be tighter.  When Stanford hits them in the mouth in their first offensive drive, I am curious as to what their reaction will be.

Re: Stanford vs. Oklahoma State: Thoughts/Predictions - GulfCoastPoke - 12-15-2011

A few questions for my Stanford friends:

1.  How is your offensive line and running game?  I've heard that yall pound the ball trying to set up play action passes...is this true and could you tell me more about your running game?

2.  Tell me about your D line and your secondary, please.  Yes, I realize this is not a question  ;D

3.  Is there anything we should know about your special teams?  For the record, OSU has a great punter/kicker (he booms punts, wasn't in consideration for awards b/c he didn't punt enough, consistently kicks off for touchbacks, and has a good field goal percentage) and our main kickoff returner is a stud.

4.  I understand your offense utilizes multiple tight end formations....but can you tell me about your wideouts?

That makes two of us.  Our team is pretty good at stopping the run....the only exception this year was against Iowa state, and our defense was gassed from 4 turnovers.

Royce, 1987, you get a respect point from me just for having the good sense to be a friend of Chase.  I got to know him a little bit while he was at Stanford and still see him every couple of weeks [hoping to have dinner with him again in the coming weeks].  He's a very, very impressive guy!

Don't forget the other side of the Stanford coin, #33 Stepfan Taylor, his second 1000 yard season. Or, OSU folks, rather, please forget #33 Taylor. He's the foundation of our "run first" philosophy and he will be returning next year, thank god.

Re: Stanford vs. Oklahoma State: Thoughts/Predictions - Orangepower - 12-17-2011

Hey, y'all, thought I would chime in here for my first post.

I really think this game is going to boil down to the war in the trenches. If we play defensively like we did against K-State, we're in trouble. I don't see Bill Young blitzing a ton in this game like we did against OU. Landry Jones is much easier to rattle than Luck will be. We'll probably try to keep everything in front of us and wait on y'all to make mistakes to stop drives. That's a tough way to roll against a quarterback as good and as seasoned as Luck. I guarantee your receivers haven't played against a secondary that hits as hard as ours, so they may get a little jittery about making any catches across the middle. We have two cornerbacks who can run with almost any receiver one-on-one, so that frees up our safeties to play the run.

Our O-Line may be the best you've played all year. You won't be able to generate any pressure on Weeden just rushing 4. And if you don't pressure him, he's likely to pick you apart. However, if your cover guys are good, he has so much confidence that sometimes he tries to throw the ball into some pretty tight spaces. Many of his interceptions are of this variety, but more times than not, he makes those throws.

If we don't force y'all to kick field goals instead of score touchdowns, or if we don't get any takeaways, or if we give you the ball more than we take it  ;), this game could come down to whomever has the ball last. I am looking forward to an exciting game, and I hope for a fun, injury free game for both sides!

Re: Stanford vs. Oklahoma State: Thoughts/Predictions - stanfan - 12-17-2011

Gulf Coast Poke...Here's some answers to your questions:

1.  The power running game is the heart of the offense.  The  O line has three projected first round NFL picks at LT,  RG and TE.  It has two freshman AA at LG and RT.  Stanford often runs its Hulk package with 7 OL in the game at once.  The O Line is viewed by many as the best in college football along with that of  Wisconsin.  That said, I stiil don't think they are as strong as last year's group.  Behind the OL are four excellent down-hill RB's:  Taylor, Gaffney, Wilkerson and Stewart (short yardage specialist).  Taylor is a strong, quick, north-south runner who gets the majority of the carries.  Gaffney is a superb all purpose back...mix of power, speed and balance with excellent hands...who runs our version of the Wildcat.  Wilkerson is a young 215 pound power back with speed.  Stewart is the guy you don't want to meet in the hole.  We also have 3 excellent, big  FB's, one of whom is a converted tight end who is a key receiver out of the backfield.  Then, there is a guy named Andrew Luck who makes the show go....calling most of the plays depending on what fronts and coverages he sees.  He's pretty good.  Mike Riley (coach at another OSU) says playing defense against Andrew Luck is like playing defense with your pants down because he always changes the play to the correct play.  Other coaches have made similar comments.  As to  play action, the answer is "yes we can".  Luck is a superb ball handler and throws extremely well on the move. Stanford runs three TE sets with the best trio of TE's in college football.  We were without one the TE's against SC and Oregon and it really limited what we could do.  They will all be back for the Pokes.  TE's are our leading receivers.  So, expect to see Stanford line up without wideouts, play action and then throw to one of the 3 TE's.

2.  Stanford's base D is a 3/4.  Our DL and LB crews are strong and deep.  We did lose our best player on defense...MLB Shane Skove...early in the season and he will not be back to face the Pokes.  We have an all-league SS who is a fearsome hitter and an excellent senior FS.  Our CB's are the weakest part of the defense and what I expect the Pokes will  exploit with your outstanding passing game.    Our D is very aggressive...lots of blitzes from strange places.  Your O-line...who I understand is excellent...will be tested.  If we can't get to Weeden, it will be a tough day for us against your receivers.

3  Our kicking game is very solid.  Good depth and coverage on KO's.  Our returns have not been outstanding...only 1 to the house this year.  Our punter is good as is punt coverage.  We have an excellent punt returner.  FG kicking has been very good.  We were without our #1 kicker for awhile.  He's back.

4. Our premier WR is actually a TE.  He's 6'6" tall, runs like a deer (third fastest guy on the team), and weighs 250 pounds.  He is your basic coverage nightmare out of the 3 TE set.  I call him a WR because he runs a lot of deep, vertical routes. Our #1 true WR is a senior who began as a walk on.  Adequate speed, incredible hands and superior routes.  Our speed WR (and kick returner) has suffered multiple concussions this year and his play and production have been limited accordingly.  Very sad.  For the sake of his health, I hope we don't see him in this game...or any others.  We have a solid freshman WR (also returns kicks), with size and very good speed who will someday be much more than solid.  Overall, WR is the weakest unit on a talented team.
