MBB: Stanford 66 -- Cal 72 - skip75 - 02-21-2026

Stanford invades Haas Pavilion, where Cal fans are planning a "Gold Out" - their gold always looks like yellow to me, but whatever makes them feel good. Cal is favored by 1.5, over/under is 148.5 - implied score is 75-73.5.

My preview and the the thread from the home loss 4 weeks ago: https://thecardboard.org/board/thread-26035.html?highlight=MBB

Since then, the outlook, expectations, & goals for the season have been on a downward trajectory. Stanford is 2-4 in the last 3 weeks and is now  in 13th place in the ACC. Making the NCAA tournament has become a pipe dream. Hope of getting a bye in the ACC tourney is fading fast.  Current projections have Stanford in the NIT as a 5 seed. Meanwhile, Cal is projected to be a 1 seed in the NIT, but Cal fans still hope for a strong finish and a spot in the NCAA tourney.

Lee Dort has not played since getting injured in the Stanford game. Mark Madsen is hoping Dort can play today - said a few days ago that it was 50-50. Dort is listed as a "Game Time Decision" on the ACC injury report. In his absence, Milos Ilic has been inserted into the starting lineup, and another big man - Mantas Kocanas - has seen more action.

Cal continues to do well with 3s, rating 4th in the ACC in 3-pt% on offense (37.2), and 3rd in defending the 3 (30.4%). John Camden leads the way with 72 3s on 42.9% shooting.  Dai Dai Ames, Justin Pippin, & Chris Bell all have 42+ 3s on 35-40% shooting. This was a key to their win at Maples, as they were 10-25 from 3 vs. 6-31 for Stanford. This needs to get turned around today for Stanford to have a chance for the upset.

Thanks for the write-up! Can't watch live, but this is arguably the biggest game left on the schedule. Go Card!

I gather Haase is the guest coach for this game. At least the team is playing like it…

RE: MBB: Stanford at Cal, 3PM, ACCN - ADPinWDC - 02-21-2026

Watching #1 MICH vs #3 DUKE on ESPN in Multi view.
What a difference in level of play, defense, athleticism, ability to get a shot.

Those two teams have Okorie level play at five positions.
Loaded with McDonald's All-Ams.

76lsjumb - 76lsjumb - 02-21-2026

In the last six games, Agarwahl is shooting about 12.5% from the field. I believe that coincides with when ACC TV announcers started pronouncing his name “Uggerwall.”

Outstanding analysis.

Kal looked the part of an NCAA bubble team. Stanford offense still struggling for loooong stretches. Pleased that Cammann is becoming at least a semi-consistent offensive force, but he's part of the team's poor shooting from the charity stripe and that's just absolutely a killer.

RE: MBB: Stanford at Cal, 3PM, ACCN - ADPinWDC - 02-21-2026

We likely end at 18-13, then ACC Tourney.

Maybe an 8 seed in the NIT?

so is Madsen a better coach?  Strong results vs Stanford and UNC.

(1) I am sure that question could be debated for days, if not weeks, with no real conclusion.

(2) But, hopefully no serious StanU Mens BBall Fan or StanU Administration or AD official would spend their time on that:

(3) The more productive question which is easily answered & should lead to a complete overhaul in thinking by Stanford, the Athletic Department and the Administration is:

(4) Would any D1 Mens Basketball Program that wanted to be a perennial NCAA Tournament Top20 team, hire either of those 2 coaches or run their Athletic Department or Mens Basketball Program or NIL or Admissions/Transfers programs like Stanford currently does ?

what? stanford is great at paying big bucks for athletic administrators - lots of them!  doesn't that work?  ; ^ )

Those who said we were in trouble after Okpara went down were Oh so right.
I’m sure Coach Smith still quite frustrated as to how this season, that started so promisingly, has slipped away.
I’m still hoping for NIT invite but not confident it’s coming for sure.

RE: MBB: Stanford at Cal, 3PM, ACCN - Card10Fan - 02-22-2026

The question of the offseason is how MUCH money is it going to take to keep Okpara. I'm going to say north of $1million for sure. Does Stanford have that to offer?

Not sure we want to spend a whole lot of money on Okpara, unless he’s a really good coach…

No doubt Card10Fan meant Okorie. Hope we can keep him.

I’m sure 76lsjumb knew that and was just having a little fun.

Indeed. Unfortunately, “fun” is a word that has been largely absent with respect to MBB and WBB recently… except for those six free steak burgers from Shake Shack my wife and I have enjoyed in the past few weeks :-) [not that I would mind exchanging them for six wins].

Sorry to be that guy who punctures the joke.

No worries. And, honestly, I would seriously consider taking all that money folks want to spend on the offensive line and offering it to Okorie, instead. It’s been a LONG time since we’ve had someone as fun to watch as he is…

RE: MBB: Stanford at Cal, 3PM, ACCN - Treebound - 02-23-2026

Keeping Okorie is critical.   This is going to be a very interesting test of Donahoe's new administration and how we handle the new NIL world.  My hope is that Ebuka, like Maxime, values his Stanford education and the relationships that he's built on campus.  Yes, it's been stated that his family values a great eduction - his parents attended Harvard and he was originally going to the Crimson, I believe.   If we can just be in the ballpark, it would be wonderful to keep him and make a real run next year.  I really don't want to see him at Duke, UNC, Kentucky, etc...

I like our new coach a great deal and believe he and the staff will get us there, versus what we saw with the Haase/Dawkins debacle years.  As for Kate and the women's program - I'm less positive and think she's got one more year to prove herself.  I wish her luck.
