A hype video from Stanford Football for the TEs - washingtonismoney - 03-05-2012

Presumably cc'd for all the tight end targets in the 2013 class.

Re: A hype video from Stanford Football for the TEs - washingtonismoney - 03-05-2012

Speaking of which, apparently target Durham Smythe will announce Friday (http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/colleges/texas/post/_/id/2470/te-durham-smythe-to-decide-this-week).

Deciding between us and Texas. Always tough to beat Texas for Texans, and Texas fans are confident.

Yeah, we never get any good guys from Texas.

...who we had to beat Texas for, no. Only recruit I think we've beaten Texas for was Andrus Peat, and he is, as far as I know, about 0% Texan.

Re: A hype video from Stanford Football for the TEs - fullmetal - 03-05-2012

Re: Peat, Texas is targeting a lot of Arizona guys for reasons previously discussed on this board (mainly, no in-state power), and that is reason for concern.  At least we don't have to battle sentiment there.

Beating Texas for a Texas HS player will be tough but doable.

Re: A hype video from Stanford Football for the TEs - yvonne - 03-05-2012

Texas wasn't smart enough to grab the guys we got from Houston in 2008. I'll take those over anybody. In 2009, Josh Mauro had Texas in his final list.

Weren't Nebraska fans pretty confident about landing Andrus Peat?  And Michigan fans confident about getting Josh Garnett?  I know it's not the same situation, given Texan state loyalty, but given the way we use TEs in our offense, I won't be surprised if he chooses to come to California.

Texas has made some recruiting blunders as evidenced by their on-field performance (helped by a healthy dollop of bad coaching in some regards--see Mad Dog Madden), but they're changing their ways.  Juco recruits are now an option for Texas, for example, which hasn't been the case in a long while iirc.  I wouldn't be surprised if some of those changed ways include actually recruiting smarter.  Texas is starting to target more non-Texas recruits as well.

Agreed.  Our guys from DFW are no slouches either.

Smythe to Texas: http://insider.espn.go.com/insider/texas/forums/_/light-the-tower#!/topic/1331257188-660-77

Tough loss--a TE or two is needed desperately in this class.

Re: A hype video from Stanford Football for the TEs - slide - 03-08-2012

Smythe was a tough loss.  I wonder if Randolph ends up at TE for us.  I like his film catching the ball better than his D film (which is still good).  he'd be a throwback -- a Cosbie type TE.

Re: A hype video from Stanford Football for the TEs - oman - 03-08-2012

Well, shoot.  I thought the quote from Smythe, where he met Fleener and Fleener told him he needed to pick a school that felt right, did not bode well for us.  Smythe sounded like a guy checking out Stanford because you'd be a dolt not to check out Stanford.

Stanford is beautiful, but Austin is like a drug, man.

Re: A hype video from Stanford Football for the TEs - slide - 03-09-2012

Oman, (and I like Austin) Austin may be like a drug, but for TEs in 2011 it looks more like a bad trip.

in 2011:

Stanford TEs (excluding Hewitt) caught 86 passes for 1356 yards (15.8 ypc) and 19 TDs.
Texas TEs caught 22 balls for 222 yards (10.1 ypc) and 4 TDs.

Re: A hype video from Stanford Football for the TEs - oman - 03-09-2012

No disagreement slide.

I just think when an 18 year old kid from Belton, just up the road from Austin, sees the size of the UT stadium, sees the energy on that campus, sees how serious those guys take football and the revenue it gets, sees the sheer quantity of attractive undergrads, etc., I don't think it is all that surprising that someone would make that call, even if it doesn't make academic or football sense.

Hah, I thought me bringing up a legal pad and putting the pluses and minuses of each school that my kids were looking at would be very persuasive to them, but not a chance.  These kids go on feel and gut instinct.

This guy played with David Ash, who will quarterback for Texas.  That seems like a pretty big draw.

Re: A hype video from Stanford Football for the TEs - fullmetal - 03-09-2012

Funny, those UT tight end numbers are highly inflated by that 3 TD performance DJ Grant put up against UCLA early in the season :p  It just hasn't been a good time for those TEs lately (DJ Grant went to my high school).  With the emergence of Bergeron and Brown in the backfield though, there will certainly be opportunities for more passing.

Re: A hype video from Stanford Football for the TEs - socalstanfan1 - 03-09-2012

Is anyone else here as mystified as I am about why we haven't been able to pick up a top-flight TE prospect recently?  Given that we use our TEs more than anyone else in the nation, featuring them as keys to the offense, and are about to have a guy probably be either the first or second TE chosen in the NFL draft, you'd think we would have these guys flocking campus.  I could see how, after the year that we picked up Ertz, Toilolo, Hewitt, and Najvar (who later transferred) that we might have a dry spell.  But now those guys are on the tali-end of their time at Stanford, so opportunities will abound in the most sophisticated TE-driven offense around.  Now it looks like Adam Brenneman will be announcing, and we are out of the running with him, as well.

Frustrating.

Re: A hype video from Stanford Football for the TEs - Rando - 03-09-2012

Luke and Blake Martinez are two true freshman who played TE in high school. Luke might project as the next Toilolo with his height.

If Luke is a planned TE than we don't really need a premier TE in this next class, but it would be nice. With the depth we have on the D-Line, Luke would have to beat out other four stars. He wouldn't have the same competition if he were to play TE.

Re: A hype video from Stanford Football for the TEs - StannyBoy - 03-09-2012

calm down everyone. We have plenty options at TE for next season and we'll get at least one in this class. And we're getting a 4 star CB tomorrow. :)

Wouldn't be so sure about that. Hawkins got an offer from USC and either committed today or will tomorrow.

As to TEs...it's at blinking-red stage, even if Kaumatule gets converted to TE. Currently we have three scholarship TEs on the roster--Toilolo, Ertz and Dudchock. Dudchock hasn't caught a pass in his career. Toilolo and Ertz might well turn pro after the season. So in the absolute worst case scenario, we have two TEs in 2013. Forget three-TE hulk packages--that's barely enough to get through a season. So we need one or two TEs in this class or else we're courting danger in 2013.

Re: A hype video from Stanford Football for the TEs - Rando - 03-09-2012

I doubt Toilolo and Ertz both go pro. One might go, or both could possibly stay. Who knows.

I have confidence in Dudchock's receiving abilities. Brandon Gottfried is 6'5 and a redshirt sophomore. We can't forget about Matt Kasner either who Fleener had very nice comments about.

We have an abundance of athletic QB's that we may not use. Maybe somebody like Hogan who is about 215lbs and 6'4 can catch. Or a bigger WR who can beef up to TE like 6'4, 214lb freshman Devon Cajuste. Plus we have defensive ends who have tight end size. Nate Lohn seems fast and athletic, 6'3 265lbs.

I think we have some options if we have to switch a reserve type player into a tight end, I think we could make it happen.
