Who did Jessica Dorrell beat out for that job? -
fullmetal - 04-13-2012
Bobby Petrino had 158 other applicants for a job that he hired Jessica Dorrell to fill--among the other applicants were highly-qualified football people, a NASA rocket scientist, and a former Cal grad who had worked in the Stanford recruiting office:
Quote: Christianne Harder, a Cal grad who has worked in the recruiting offices at Stanford and Washington and who currently consults for Western Kentucky's football program.
The Andy Staples article is linked
here--one-pager and worth a read.

Interesting article FM; thanks for the link.
I enjoyed the expansion on the NASA guy. A nice slice of life kind of thing.

Harder writes in SI:

Harder: "Jessica Dorrell just screwed me."
Unfortunate choice of expression, methinks.

I think it was intentional.

It's interesting that Harder seems to be laying the blame squarely on Dorrell. It strikes me that Petrino is at least much at fault.

Dorrell gets the blame for not considering what effect her actions might have on the rest of women working in male-dominated sports...but my guess is that Dorrell wasn't considering very much in the way of long-term consequences in the first place. Harder's article wasn't really concerned with the fact that Dorrell displaced her candidacy but with the fact that this case is now having a chilling effect on all potential women hires in male-dominated coaching staffs.
At least, that's how I read it.

I read it the same way. My point was that Harder seems to be putting all of the blame on Dorrell for the negative effects this incident has, whereas I think Petrino deserves at least as much of the blame. Dorrell and Petrino
together did a ton of damage to all women working in male-dominated sports, and yet Harder is criticizing only Dorrell for that.

There is plenty of blame to go around in this case. The fact that Petrino was blameworthy doesn't make Dorrell any less so, and vice versa.

Blame in $EC scandals is not a zero-sum game...awesome :p

It feels a bit misplaced. Most people who get jobs really aren't the absolutely most qualified. Many people who get jobs get them because they have an "in". People who improperly give and accept jobs to peole they are romantically attached or attracted to always they they can keep the relatinship quiet or get out of it quietly.Â
Mostly, people don't base their hiring decisions on one-off issues like this.
All that being said, I doubt a smart, attractive, athletic woman like Harder is going to be seriously disadvantaged in her job searches in the future.

I agree with most of what you said except the last part about Harder being disadvantaged in future job searches--the article itself states that a dinner Harder was supposed to have with the coach of another program was cancelled because of the Petrino scandal. I think all networking events that aren't public between male coaches in positions of authority and women prospective hires will suffer a chilling effect. There are ways to work around it--coaches can bring their spouses or significant others, but still, there's a new obstacle to deal with.

Eh, this is high profile I will admit. But its not an issue that is new to powerful executives or university officials or any other powerful manager who has the chance to hire an attractive person of the opposite sex in a positioin of relatively little authority.
Attractive people have an edge. Employers, including football programs, are still going to have to diversity their hires or else be subject to discrimination lawsuits. The chilling effect may be a surface action, but it won't affect the ultimate hires.
So the interview won't be at the romantic bistro. In the article it doesn't indicate whether they eventually did or will meet, or whether the discussion they had about current issues may have actually helped Harder with the opportunity.

Okay, I'll be honest, I am kind of curious as to when my rep will spill, if ever, into the positive, but come on...
What did I say to deserve another -1?

I do not see any -1 on any of your posts in this thread. Perhaps the rater made a mistake and went back and corrected it.

Thanks. Now I know what the number is!
I guess someone just must have recently read one of my pasts posts and gotten a rise out of it.

oman, I know what you mean about substantive barriers and this not being a directly substantive barrier, but I think it affects the way women approach the task of finding a job in such an atmosphere, and I'm willing to give Harder the benefit of the doubt when she says that things just got harder now that more caution and due diligence is being applied to this kind of job search. I mean, I'm also tempted to say 'no big deal,' but I'm not in their shoes...ah well.

Did you think my prior post was directed at your post fullmetal? I was addressing it to the fact that someone (someone being sweet) had given me positive rep and I was posed to enter positive territory.
