they updated the weight of everyone. Fleming, Underwood, and Austin have really bulked up. And Peat, Garnett, and Nwafor are brobdingnagian considering they are freshman.

I'm going to be very interested in watching Nwafor's development. A guy from a small HS in football-crazy Texas, who apparently never really did the whole combine circuit; showed up at a Stanford camp, IIRC, earned a scholarship offer, disappeared from the recruiting buzz until he committed to Stanford, then showed up at a couple of all-star games late and outperformed guys who were rated as 4-stars.
Obviously he has natural size for the DT position; let the Stanford coaches work with him, and hopefully he elevates his play at the big time college level. I'm wondering if, in one of the strongest recruiting classes (on paper) in Stanford history, he might not be the sleeper we are all talking about in a couple of years.Â

(scroll down to the section on D-Line stepping up to get a rave about Nwafor, with a word of caution about intensity)
And, on Ikenna's strong performance in the game itself:

nice finds on Nwafor socalstanfan. our coaches were very high on his ceiling, and Randy Hart has a long, positive track record on interior DL development.
in that area, I wonder who we are going to bring in to replace Chester McGlockton.
Re: Football roster -

I thought Fanaika was going on his mission for two years. Terry, is that not the case anymore?

Is there something up with the fact he's not on the roster list? Seems it should have been updated if just an oversight.

Wow, James Vaughters went from 208 to 246!
Four things that stood out looking at the roster:
1. In general, Stanford is a big team.Â
At every position there are some pretty big guys, even at CB, with Carter and Lyons.Â
2. The Frosh OL
Kyle Murphy at 6-7 280, is almost certainly going to redshirt. Josh Garnett and Andrus Peat would seem most likely to play as True Frosh, simply based on their size, though with Garnett I wonder if all that 325 is good weight.
3. Position designations
Curious to see Yankey listed at OT. I thought Kevin Anderson was an OLB. Wayne Lyons listed at DB, not CB. Does this mean he still could play Safety?
4. Trent Murphy
At 6-6 261, if he continues to improve as a Senior, he may end up being drafted higher than Chase Thomas. NFL 3-4 teams rarely get the opportunity to draft guys who have the size of Murphy and who played standing up in college.

Interesting. On Yankey, at first I thought that meant he was likely to start at tackle, he and Fleming. Then again, he was a tackle before suddenly moving to guard and maybe that's just a listing that carried over from last year.
Olugbode and Reynolds are listed as SS while Richards as DB. I thought Richards was SS. Or did Thomas move to strong safety last year when Richards filled in for Howell?

In modern defensive football, it seems the designations between strong and free safeties have blurred, and they are more considered right and left than strong and free. I still like the idea of having a SS and FS. A SS is more stout against the run and a FS better in pass coverage. But I suppose with the passing game becoming so dominant, it makes more sense to simply have two safeties equally good against the pass.
As for Stanford, it seems to me Jordan Richards and Zach Hoffpauir are ideally suited for SS. But based on what I have read, I have no clue who the safeties are going to be or who will be playing which one.

FWIW: Nate Lohn has made some appearances in photos on twitter, and seems to be working out with the team. Not sure why his name is not on the roster.
Re: Football roster -

The 208 for Vaughters was a typo he was at 238.Â
Re: Football roster -

i don't think they have updated the roster to show the position changes.
Re: Football roster -
terry - 07-25-2012
The roster on the official football website has been updated.
Nate Lohn was added. Apparently his omission from last Friday's version was just a mistake.
Brandon Fanaika was taken off the roster, which is consistent with the reports that he is taking his mission this year.
Eric Whitaker is missing. I wonder whether that's just another mistake.
More new jersey numbers:
55Â Nate Lohn
59Â George Fullerton
59Â Craig Jones
82Â Alex Frkovic
82Â Chris Harrell
I didn't check whether there were any changes to the heights and weights (mostly because I don't think they're very reliable in any event).

Re: Football roster - ChicagoCard - 07-25-2012
Somebody I think suggested John Elway's (or was it Plunkett's) number should be retired. But then according to the roster, could be two guys wearing number 7 in the backfield at the same time and a third possibly getting some snaps on defense...
7 Aziz Shittu DE 6-3 264 FR Atwater, CA/Buhach Colony
7 Brett Nottingham QB 6-4 212 SO Alamo, CA/Monte Visa HS
7 Patrick Skov FB 6-1 238 RS FR Piedmont, CA/The Lawrenceville School

Don't believe you can do that.

Yeah, I know. Should have left some cue, or emoticon thing. There are 121 names listed on that roster sharing numbers 2 - 99. What's wrong with number 1? And I hope Patrick Skov has to change his number / gets playing time.

Re: Football roster -
FarmBoy - 07-25-2012
Clearly 2 guys can play in the same game with the same number, as seen last year when both Toilolo and Skov played with #11. But they were on opposite sides of the ball, one offense and one defense. Can you have two players on offense, or two players on defense use the same number in a game, as long as they aren't in at the same time?

Jordan Pratt got some decent press in the spring I believe. He also is pretty big. Any thoughts on whether he will get much playing time this year? I assume Montgomery is our #1 WR.
