Can we get to 7+ wins given Nunes' lack of progress? - TreeFitty - 09-27-2012

Not taking anything for granted, it looks like WSU and Colorado are the only predictable wins at this point.

Cal's a rivalry game, and they could definitely get up for Big Game.

Arizona's a wild card. Even after their debacle vs. Oregon.

UCLA could beat Nebraska at the Rose Bowl. We're not looking better than Nebraska.

Oregon...lol.

Oregon State looks legit.

We could shut down ND's offense, but whats the point if our QB poops the bed on the road.

It wasnt all Nunes. There were some dropped balls on big plays. But while defense wins games, you still have to score.

No.

There's no way we win a road game other than Colorado. It's not Nunes' fault. He's just not that good. Shaw, on the other hand, has to make a decision about putting the best guys on the field and calling the best plays to win the game. Everybody has to do his part for the team to win, and that includes the coaches.

It's not THAT bad.  Remember, we would have won tonight if Montgomery catches a couple balls.

We did not score an offensive touchdown. Yes, it is that bad.

Re: Can we get to 7+ wins given Nunes' lack of progress? - Rando - 09-27-2012

This Stanford team is capable of doing much better than 7 wins. It's easy to be pessimistic after a loss like this. But remember, we beat USC. We will give any team in the country a good game. Our QB's first road start resulted in a close loss. This was not a gimme game.

We're going to win more than 7 games. This is Stanford. Come on.

Problem is, this was an unranked team that was demolished 41-3 by LSU. "Would have wons" only really are silver linings against teams that have been shown to be top caliber.

As an alum of the buddy/harris era, "This is Stanford. Come on" doesnt quite work as you intend. :)

Yes.  I did not predict we would go 9-3 by winning every game.  In fact, we're probably in a better spot right now than I would have predicted before the season.  I will hope that Montgomery learns to catch balls, or that only Zach Ertz is thrown to in the remaining games.

Yet our offense was able to score 2 TDs on USC in Stanford.

1 bad game does not define a season. Especially a tough matchup on the road with a rookie QB in his first road start.

I want Nottingham. But we will win more than 7 with or without Nunes. Have some confidence. Our team is great all around, but we had our worst game today and U Dub barely squeaked by us. It's not the end of the world.

Re: Can we get to 7+ wins given Nunes' lack of progress? - Leftcoast - 09-27-2012

Lose ALL non-Colorado road games?  This was as tough as losses get but Big Game is in Berkeley.  Are you ready to show a white flag in that game and all others after one tough loss?  My prediction is that despite the gloomy evidence tonight, the sun WILL rise tomorrow.

Our worst game was vs. SJSU.

And maybe at some point we should start thinking about what it really means that USC lost to Stanford.

I became a fan in 2009. I understand where you are coming from. But this is a team with too much talent to lose more than half of the remaining games. There is just no way.

This forum can be really pessimistic at times. I'm not happy with our performance tonight. I'm really disappointed, but I have faith in our team. We are winners. We're going to do very well this season.

Do you think we can win Big Game on the road with a quarterback who's worse than Maynard?

Stanford is gaining fans by winning. But that's not why I became a hardcore Stanford fan. As a child I never had much interest for college ball. Sometime after I started going to college I got into it. For whatever reason, I chose Stanford. It wasn't because we were ranked #8 in the country, I'll tell you that much. We weren't ranked for the beginning of that season, when I got into it.

Here's what is scary.  On the broadcast they said Stanford coaches wanted Nunes to get his completion percentage to 60% from the 53% it was going into the game.  He proceeded to lower it by hitting on 48% of his passes tonight.

Either Nunes hits a high completion percentage in practice and coaches expect to see that and don't in games, or he doesn't hit a high percentage in practice and they hope he will play better in games.

You simply have to let Nottingham play to see if he can do better.  Nunes was the #75 rated passer in FBS going into this game.  That's below Zach Maynard.  He's now going to be even lower.

No team can win consistently with such awful QB play.
