this week in b.ear schadenfreude - slide - 11-04-2012

as I think Redrum is still celebrating the rare Stanford, Vandy and Alabama football trifecta this weekend, I borrowed his mantle on poking Oski.

the BearInsider link below is a thread regarding Tedford's possible successor as football coach at K.al.  it is not often a women's assistant golf coach is mentioned as a possible head football coach of the 59ers.  Tyrone however is one such candidate.

Re: this week in b.ear schadenfreude - fullmetal - 11-04-2012

the b.ears will likely start Allan Bridgford at QB against Oregon.  they should be consistent and rename him Bridgfurd.

Re: this week in b.ear schadenfreude - yvonne - 11-04-2012

They keep mentioning Gruden as a possible coach, but no one seems to indicate why they think he would want to coach in college.

Am I reading that thread correctly where, in the same post, someone says they dislike anyone with Stanford ties, and in the same breath says they would like the 49's OC?

Think of it as a Five Second Rule, but not for dropped cookies... - Redrum - 11-05-2012

You know, the belief that if you drop a cookie on the floor, you have five seconds before it is contaminated with, well, icky stuff.

In K.al's case, same deal with Greg Roman: he was only an assistant coach and at Stanford for only four years,  after which he was dipped in an NFL sanitizing bath.  Should be good to go, with no lingering elitist aftertaste.

What's funny about Cyberbears is that they are SO picky in their misery.  They want to get rid of a coach who had an immediate impact,  got the team into Rose Bowl contention and since then has just sort of gotten less and less effective.  But they refuse to consider a coach "tainted" at Stanford who had a shakey start, but whose teams just got better and better over time and whose team actually played in a Rose Bowl.

I think it's SO cute the way they keep talking about Chris Petersen.  Kinda like the goofy, pimply teenager who has a crush on the cheerleader prom queen.  If she only knew how good he was at Assassin's Creed 2 for Xbox,  she'd agree immediately to go to the prom with him and probably snog on the first date.

Of course, what if in some fantasy land,  our geeky kid was the only teen guy in town?  That scenario might work out for them.
What IF Greg Roman has a burning desire to be a head coach and believes he'd be really good at it if given the chance?  What if K.al  offered, even at a below-market price?    I'd hate to see that experiment even run.  He might be a really good head coach.  In other words,  K.al wouldn't deserve him.  But,  they hired Gilbertson, who was a pretty good OC and a terrible head coach,  so maybe they'd look at Roman, notice that he is as weight-challenged as Gilbertson was,  and opt for New Mexico St.'s head coach instead.

Re: this week in b.ear schadenfreude - socalstanfan1 - 11-05-2012

I'm sure it's a bit early to be thinking about Kal's coaching situation, but the one name that I could see coming to Cal, who was mentioned near the end of the thread was ex-Stanford assistant Willie Taggert, who has done an excellent job at Western Kentucky and would be a very formidable coach at a bigger program.  If anyone combines Harbaugh's EUTM with outstanding recruiting skills, it's Taggert.  I was actually hoping that we would offer him the position when Harbaugh moved on.  That is a guy who could make the Bears a power, IMO

Re: this week in b.ear schadenfreude - OutsiderFan - 11-05-2012

Most Cal fans are clueless.  Exhibit 3,346:  An article on BI that put these three names together as head coaching candidates at Cal:

John Gruden, Herm Edwards, and Tyrone.

No school fan site with a credible fan base would ever be given an article that was so utterly laughable.

Re: this week in b.ear schadenfreude - FarmBoy - 11-05-2012

It is an interesting case of a fan base that has gotten too big for its britches. They really believe that the are are an attractive site for a top-tier, star quality coach. C.al's window closed for grabbing elite recruits when Stanford decided to wake up. West recruits who want a football factory will go to U.SC and/or Oregon. Recruits drawn to a blue collar mentality will probably go to a place like OSU or Utah. If they want a party school, they'll go to ASU (and UA?). If they're looking for a combination of top-flight academics and outstanding football, well, clearly Stanford is now the place to be.

Okay, that's perhaps over simplified. But right now, I don't think C.al football has a "brand" that resonates to recruits, especially with the on field performance. And a top-tier HC can see that. And none of those guys they're talking about care about working for "the number one PUBLIC university". They want a strong football program where they don't have to worry about raising money, getting facilities, or dealing with academic headaches. They want to coach players who with the talent to take the team to the BCS CG.

They don't have a brand period, unless not having a brand is a brand.

The problem with California as it relates to its football program, is that there is absolutely zero leadership.  In as much as Oregon has Knight, Stanford has Arillaga.  Both those guys want to win. Their money has forced the university to care about fielding a winning football program.  California has some wealthy donors, but it doesn't have anyone to step up and demand performance.  The culture there is that they don't really want to win that badly.  As long as they go to a bowl game, beat Stanford occasionally, and graduate players, that's enough for California.

Even now, with even the most ardent Tedford apologists now admitting he must go, there are donors who still aren't convinced he should go because they "like" him.

I once read a post on NDNation that was about all you ever need to know about winning in sports. it went something like this: Coaches who fall in love with QBs and ADs who fall in love with coaches do not have long lives.

The implication is if it is not about performance, the enterprise fails.  You can add "donors who fall in love with coaches" to the same quote.  At California, you have all three.  It's a total and complete disaster, from virtually every angle, including the obvious financial one.

The only way California can ever be saved from a football standpoint, and get back to being a championship contender, is if someone steps up to demand and pay for California to perform.  Absent that, it's just going to continue to be what it has been most of the time since the 1950s.

Kentucky just fired their coach.  Taggert would have to be a top candidate for the KY job, wouldn't he?

I don't see K.al's problems as a talent issue.  They have plenty of very capable players, many of whom were highly sought-after recruits.  Witness the way they dismantled UCLA earlier this year.  The problem is coaching.  K.al only plays hard some of the time.  Tedford also has been unable to develop a top flight QB since Aaron Rodgers.  You don't need a high profile coach to rectify these issues.
