Ohio stealth recruit -

New theory behind the stealth recruit from my home state: QB Kyle Kempt. He recently decommitted from Cincy. He had an offer from Harbaugh when he was in 8th grade and has a strong interest in engineering and technology. Very high GPA and scores. I know we are stacked at QB but the best overall athlete from a given high school is often the QB and we have a good history of QBs converted to other positions (Lynch and Armour).

James Lofton, Gene Washington

I wouldn't be so quick to just think of converting Kempt to another position. Football at all levels is filled with players who receive brobdingnagian amounts of hype but never live up to their advanced billing. I'm not saying that about anyone in particular associated with Stanford, I'm just saying that it is never a problem for me if the team takes multiple great players at the most important position on the field. Let them sort it out in practice, the film room, and live game situations. Getting a winning QB who can direct the offense efficiently makes everything else easier for your team, in all aspects of the game. We can see that in the effect Hogan had on the team. Not coincidentally, Hogan also serves as the example of a player who was highly regarded, but NOT as highly regarded as some of the other QBs on the team, but who has taken the spot and made it his own.

Did not know they were qbs. Wow yvonne's knowledge is as touted: encyclopedic.
Lets get Dallas Lloyd a pair of gloves.

Gene Washington played QB at Stanford but Lofton a QB ? Certainly not at Stanford.Â
Name Washington's backup at QB on the Frosh team of 1965?Â

I can't see Shaw taking Kempt when we already have Burns in a small class. I don't think Shaw ever recruited him once he took over for Harbaugh.

Yes on Mark as the back up QB. Nice going.

Lofton was a QB at George Washington High School in Los Angeles.

Gene Washington's backup, let's see, Plunkett?

Actually when Gene Washington played QB, Plunkett was a freshman.
Plunkett redshirted as a sophomore when Washington was moved to WR.
And of course, Washington was his primary target when Plunkett emerged as the starter in 1968.
Seems like a good player and if you use the Harbaugh philosophy that too many QB's is an oxymoron maybe we should go for it. He is listed on Rivals as having an offer.

I think Michael Thomas played QB in HS too.

He did, and his HS team used to play against Andrew Luck's team.
He said Andrew Luck going to Stanford helped convince him to also, so he must definitely have anticipated switching positions.

Justin Armour came to Stanford as the no. 4 QB in the country and was converted to WR.
John Lynch came to Stanford as a QB, even played a few snaps there in mop up duty, and was converted to safety.
I don't know how good this kid is; we currently have a lot of QBs on the roster, but it is not clear how good they are. We could use an upgrade at backup QB.

Why would we take Kempt when we cut him loose a long time ago? Not like we don't know about him.

Scout actually has Kempt one spot ahead of Burns. Unbelievable they are so down on Burns and Rivals is so high on him. Rivals is updating their rankings very soon so we'll see his final ranking with them. I can't imagine him not being in their top 10 when it's all said and done.

Anyone have any insight why we seemed to ignore Max Browne and went straight to Burns?

We liked Burns better. No official reason why (obviously), but if you watch them both play -- Burns has considerably more upside (and he seems to be a tough, competitive, good player, so there's at least decent reason to believe he'll realize that upside), and Browne is basically a statue.
Re: Ohio stealth recruit -

I saw a few clips of Burns from his junior year (after he accepted our offer) and his intermediate passes looked a little wobbly. I haven't seen Browne throw, but his stats are impressive. Does Burns have a stronger and/or more accurate arm to go with the better mobility you mentioned?
Re: Ohio stealth recruit -
washingtonismoney - 01-16-2013
Burns has a quick release, strong arm, yeah. Accuracy is an unknown since he's lucky to get more than one guy on a passing route at a time.

Ok, thx. Shaw was QB coach for the Raiders, so I assume he knows what he's doing. Hopefully it has some analogies to Kapernick vs. Alex Smith - one is completing 70% of his short passes and is rated highly, while the other has less throwing experience but a stronger arm, is more mobile and has more upside.
